Doing controversial shit just to get attention and sell magazines - smart or desperate?????
According to reports, the illustrator, artist Barry Blitt, "satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign.”
We think it's adding fuel to the fire, though. There are some people out there who will think that it's Michelle and Barack who are being satirized.
It just seems to reinforce the inaccurate shizz that's always attributed to the Obamas.
Obama spokesperson Bill Burton said in a statement, “The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."
A McCain mouthpiece said, “We completely agree with the Obama campaign, it’s tasteless and offensive.”
We bet the Republicans are LOVING this, though!
To make things fair we think the New Yorker should feature a McCain 'satire' on the cover too.

I agree, it would have been a better cover if it showed a satire of both candidates. It would have sent a better message about the state of American politics and presidential campaign wars.

Who cares??? It is funny, it is about time that the press start treating Obama with the same disrepect that they treat every other candidate. He is not above this, he new running for President would not be easy, he knew what he was getting himself involved in. The press makes nasty comments about George Bush all the time. Obama better grow some thick skin if he does become President because this is only the beginning. He should asked President Bush how he handles all the bad press and still manages not to cave into political pressure and stand firm in his beliefs.

This is really disappointing. I always thought that the New Yorker was a good, insightful, somewhat impartial media outlet, but I guess not. Since our country is filled with some many naive, uninformed people who will believe a silly illustration before doing actual research or reading a history book, this picture will probably have a lot of influence over people. And it would be one thing to highlight John McCain's age, because that is an indisputable fact. Barack Obama is not a terrorist, and I find the above illustration offensive and irrelevant. I bet the New Yorker is going to issue an apology soon, and I think the whole publication should be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating such a stupid, irrelevant stereotype.

Well, it may be satire, but there's a lot of truth in there. The Obama's may not be true haters of America (although indeed they may be), but a lot of the people they've associated with for decades truly are. Both Obama and McCain are airheads in many areas, but at least McCain can't be said to hate our country.

yes, i do think to make it fair you should have a satire cover of McCain; but you should also have all the other magazines publishing McCain, too. to make it fair. rolling stone published a huge spread on Obama including a cover, full interview, and extra multipage ariticles supporting him. this is seen in other magazines too. the New Yorker is one of the first i've seen goign against Obama. why don't we make it fair and have McCain get the unbiased articles he disserves. but this is a U.S. election and along with the rigth to vote is the rigth of speech. this includes publishing what you want. i don't think it will every be "fair"
