Some very good news!
Six of the major Hollywood studios will begin including antismoking public service announcements in youth-rated DVDs of films that feature tobacco use.
The studios will feature anti-smoking PSAs produced by the state of California.
On Friday, California Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the pact at a press conference alongside entertainment industry leaders, some who've long targeted the glamorization of smoking in films.
"It is historic, the fact that all the studios want to make sure there is appropriate messaging where smoking is depicted," said one of the industry leaders, "It really helps diminish the role of the cigarette in film."
The agreements with the studios run through 2009, and the Entertainment Industry Foundation is paying associated talent costs for 21 months for the use of the ads.
The first spot, "Icons," will appear on the DVD release of 21.
The ad contrasts the tobacco industry's images of a cowboy, hip-hop DJ and twenties-era flapper to that of a dying male smoker in a wheelchair.
Will Katherine Heigl or Shia LeBeouf appear in one of the PSAs?

The best thing the Government can do is keep raising the taxes on a pack, AND start selling single cigarettes. If people who smoke could only afford one or two a day, as a treat, not a staple, many fewer people would get sick.

Perez, seriously. Lay off. Most people who smoke wish they didn't, and they know it's bad for them. They don't need a crusading blogger to make them feel any worse. Find a different cause, like drunken teenagers or starving children.
While I don't condone smoking, i have never once watched a movie or television show and thought, hey they look really cool i'm gonna pick up smoking, so I don't really think this campaign will do much good. Maybe the government should step in and prohibit tabacco companies from having marketing campaigns targeted at teens.

That's all fine and dandy, but do you honestly believe that this wil prevent teens from picking up the habit? Most teens who start smoking are WELL aware of the risks of smoking, but don't really care because the repercussions are too far in the future for them to understand. I guess it can't really hurt though…

This is great news but ironic that Schwarzenegger announced it, given his penchant for cigars which he discussed in detail in Cigar Aficianado. Smoking anything is a nasty habit and I applaud all efforts to reduce its glamorization.

Really? Smoking is being targeted? What about drug use? That's glamorized in TONS of films and is just as bad and sometimes worse than smoking. And believe me, young kids know how to get their hands on drugs just as easily as cigarettes!

Re: Jon – yeah but you sure seem to be comfortable with the black lungs. my dads a smoker. hes been since he was 15. and even though its been over 40 years, it scares me that he might develop cancer. hes been extremely lucky that he hasnt yet. he thinks hes proof that smoking does nothing to you but i just attribute it to luck. its a horrible image and a horrible habit that i wish people would see as such.
Keeping weight down by smoking is a myth by the by - And I think they are wasting their moola on such ads as it I really don't think any amount of PSAs are really going to help! People begin smoking for differnt reasons, wether envirnmental or the need to fit in, etc… Please stop posting the anti smoking thing cause really, it just makes us smokers angry and really - it's none of your business!! what a ridculous country. movies tell stories. they involve characterizations and different settings, just like novels, though almost always much suckier. how sad we have to modify the behavior of fictional characters. everyone has to be the same, even in movies. no dissent allowed, not even on personal health issues/looks/lifestyle choices. amazing. you know, smokers should have public places they can go to smoke as well. if non-smokers LIKE ME do not want to go, then we can go to a non-smoking facility. as a non-smoker, i understand this. wtf people? maybe they should run big ads about the dangers of gay sex when a character does the 'ole "one two three butt fuck me scene".

They should also put disclaimers at the beginning of films with promiscuous characters that warn of the perils of STDs and unwanted pregnancy. And they should probably also put anti-drinking ads and AA information on films that glamorize alcohol consumption. And they should put Over-eaters Anonymous information before films with fat people in them.
how about producing PSA's about safe sex? since all of hollywood is preggers before even considering being in a serious relationship. unrealistic sex lives in films and TV, they don't show birth control methods being used, etc.

Seriously - no one has big ads with people dying of obesity at the start of every movie if someone in the film is eating a hamburger - It's such a joke that smokers get slandered all the time. Being a smoker i'm fed up of people in the street walking past and pretending to Cough and swat away smoke - if you don't like it go inside - we have already been pushed out of everywhere that could effect those that chose not to smoke - don't jam it down you throats.
