Is This The Answer???

George W. Bush announced Monday that he will lift an executive ban on offshore drilling in the U.S.

But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts to remove their ban as well.

Thoughts????

Yes, it's the answer for the long term. If we do these things for the long term, then, when we get there, we will see some relief. And not having to get our supplies from the Middle East will make us less needy of their oil. I don't want to hear from the granolas who care more about restraining our progress to severe detriment to the regular non bicycling, granola eatin American.

No! One answer is to reinstate the law controlling the number of people allowed to speculate in the oil and gas market. Another is to take tax breaks and subsidies away from oil companies, and transfer them to those willing and able to research alternate sources of energy.

Waiting 10 years for oil isn't going to make it cheaper or reduce our addiction to it. Why aren't we investing in other energy sources? Why hasn't Congress reauthorized the alternative energy tax credit? This isn't leadership, this is the drug dealer promising more crack.

we as a nation cannot be held hostage by the countries that supply oil to us. We must find oil in this country while finding alternatives to fossil fuel. He/congress must have more put towards developing different sources of energy. Also, Mexico is doing off shore drilling right off our coast, so as long as enviromental concerns are met, do it. I notice no view from you Perez. Looking to see which way the views are leaning?

    30. Haley says – reply to this

      30

Good. Congress needs to push this through asap! We have resources and we need to use them. If you're not okay with drilling here, why are you okay with drilling elsewhere? Consider the very real thought that no matter how many alternative-energy solutions we come up with right now to clean up life in the future, we need something to sustain us in the short term. Once we begin to produce a proportional amount of sustainable alternatives to what we consume daily in liquid oil and other oil-based goods, we can start to phase out the drilling.

    33. Commo says – reply to this

      33

of course its not going to solve our problems. I GUARANTEE that the price of gas will not go down one penny if this gets through congress. the number of barrels of oil being produced is going up as we speak but the price of oil is not going down.

    34. La Mo says – reply to this

      34

About the first smart move I've seen from GW since….since….since….hello?

Yes, we need this. 60% of our oil supply is coming from overseas. It is ridiculous our fuel should depend largely on foreign oil, when it is not necessary. More drilling here, along the gulf coast especially, will create more jobs AND allow a more prominent oil supply for the US.

Drilling today may not make a difference by tomorrow, but it sure as hell will 10 years from now. If congress lifts the ban, you'll see.

Now about that damned war …..

classic. He can say what ever he wants…..but if Congress does not follow suit, he can blame them!! "i tried i tried" whatever.

    36. ice says – reply to this

      36

It's not beneficial in the long run because he is just attempting to boost a limited supply of oil, rather than trying to reduce the demand. He is missing the point entirely. I mean, I know they are providing funding into alternative energy methods, but I think by taking this particular route of action, he makes it clear that he isn't interested in telling North Americans to use less. Using less and finding alternative sources to supplement the declining oil supply will at least be an interim measure. People have to be willing to consume less, and unfortunately most North Americans believe (while some actually do) they are entitled to have everything they want.

    37. goin says – reply to this

      37

The fact is that the true cost of oil is $65-75 per barrel. The difference in the actual price and the trading price is what the commodities traders are doing to the market by profitering. It should be illegal for a commodity like oil to be traded up so high when it affects our day to day living. I for good ole capitalisom but not when trading makes up 50% percent of the cost of a barrel of oil. Also the biggest oil discovery in years is in North Dakota and Montana we should foucus there and on renewables for the future. We could also resend protection to the Saudis unless they step up production And you cant blame Bush alone both sides have sold out the constituency

    38. Mike says – reply to this

      38

This is just a ploy to blame the Democrats and sadly there are moron stupid enough to fall for it … there are MILLIONS of acres of Federal Lands the oil companies could drill on right now and they aren't.

In fact, the reason why the oil companies want to lift the ban is because when they get the leases they can declare the potential oil as an asset and increase the value of their companies.

Idiot Republicans, answer me this: Why would the oil companies spend billions of dollars to lower the price of gas when they are making record profits???? Your hurting at the pump, stupid not Exxon

      43

We have oil. Plenty of it. We could have been drilling and it IS the only answer at this point. We have our own fossil fuels- enough to run our own country for years while we figure out alternative fuels. We should refuse to sell to china and india. Environmentalists have achieved what they wanted- gas is so expensive that people don't or can't drive as much. Are they happy? NO= they won't be happy until we are all on bicycles.

    44. wadin says – reply to this

      44

This is so dumb. It will take years to develop the sites and therefore years before this would even effect oil prices. Not to mention the fact that no matter how much oil is found by exploiting and destroying coastlines (which some estimate is not that much) oil is not reusable and environmentally harmful.

Learn about supply and demand people who are sooo concerned about big oil and rising costs. China and India are growing fast with strong economies and are demanding more and more oil. As are many other countries. Only about 20 cents per gallon go to big oil or others that make profit. We are still at about 3.80 a gallon then. This is a good shorter term step for ensuring supply(like next ten years). We also do need to take tax incentives away from big oil and invest that in alternative energy. Its not either or.

We aren't running low looking for places to drill; we have plenty of them! We don't need to add those which will harm the environment. Has everyone forgotten the horrific oil spills? If you aren't old enough, you don't remember why the ban was put in place to begin with. It did NOT help us in the energy crisis in the 70s and is not the answer now.

Instead we pay countries hand over fist to drill it deliver halfway around the planet to us as rediculous costs. Our money is then redistributed to terrorists who pose a real threat to our assets and citizens all over the world. I think drilling for the oil we need at home is responsible and any effort we can make to lessen our dependence on foreign oil is the right decision.

      .
And, to make it worse, consider that American oil companies SELL millions of barrels of oil per year to fucking FOREIGN COUNTRIES at HUGE PROFITS.
      .
Let the greedy oil companies exhaust all of their good wells, and also stop selling American oil to other countries, and THEN COME BACK to the American people and ask us to consider these new well sites.

    81. SayNo says – reply to this

      81

Haley - This is NOT a short-term solution. We already have MANY areas to drill that may have oil but we can't be everywhere at once. This is A POLITICAL MOVE BY GEORGE BUSH, NOT A REAL SOLUTION. ASK CONGRESS TO VOTE AGAINST THIS. DO YOUR RESEARCH. THIS WILL NOT LOWER PRICES ONE BIT, AND WILL NOT HELP ANYONE OUT NOW, AND EVEN 10 YEARS FROM NOW THERE IS NO GUARANTEE WHATSOEVER THAT ANY OIL WILL BE FOUND, AS WE ALREADY HAVE MANY AREAS TO DRILL. Let's drill in the areas we have available, and work on sugar cane ethanol, 7 times more energy efficient than corn ethanol, which is basically a bust. But Brazil is running largely on sugar cane ethanol, a very efficient form of ethanol - forget corn ethanol! Sugar cane ethanol is the solution! Brazil learned from the 1970s energy crisis and they are no longer dependent on foreign oil. As soon as prices lower at the tanks, I suppose Americans once again won't give a shit whether we are dependent on foreign oil. On the other hand, Brazil's leaders were smart and realized they needed to be dependent on THEMSELVES and ON SOMETHING OTHER THAN OIL. Do your research.

Hey Oil…drilling offshore will not make us less needy for oil. Driving more fuel efficient cars instead of massive SUVs will help make us less needy for oil. The solution isn't getting more oil for the country — it's reducing our consumption of oil products. Drilling may help out short term, but we have a bigger problem. And destroying our natural habitats is not a justifiable answer.

Oil is the economic engine of not only this country, but the world. Many, many countries are out there looking to drill for oil. We need to start drilling for our own oil; our dependence on foreign oil is destroying this country.

This really shows what low regard we as Americans have for the enviroment and nature. How sad, and I know for a fact that this will not help oil prices anyway, there are too many other factors at play. First we need to make Peace with Iran, then we need to get serious about developing alternative energies, before its too late.

Short term, sure. Long term, this will fuck us. As soon as we get more gas and the prices drop, people will completely forget about 'alternative energy' and in 20 years this will happen all over again. It will be worse the next time, though.

I don't really give a shit about the sea creatures, btw.

Two small facts that everyone is overlooking here: 1) It will take up to 20 years for any new drilling to impact the price of oil, and the most optomistic estimates are that it will at most drop the price of a barrel of oil by 2%. 2) There are many, many leases that were granted to the oil companies long ago in the gulf of mexico that have yet to be used. The oil companies waited on drilling them for years, because tighter supply means higher profit margin.

drilling offshore will not make gas cheaper now or 10 years from now. how can people think it is ok to destroy nature just so they can drive a car. sure its important to get to work, but try taking the bus, or carpooling or ride a bike. be aware of your planet and how its heating up! do your part!

One other huge issue that 99% of the Country is looking at: Although Enron is no longer in business, they lobbied Bush and Congress in 2000 for a change in securities regulation that allows speculators, including the largest investment banks, to partially corner the market in oil, natural gas, etc… If you think limited supply and refining capacity drove the price of oil up from 38 dollars a barrel to 147 bucks a barrel during the Bush administration, you probably need to educate yourself on the impact of energy speculation and The Enron loophole.
