Is This The Answer???

George W. Bush announced Monday that he will lift an executive ban on offshore drilling in the U.S.

But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts to remove their ban as well.

Thoughts????

While this is hardly the place to post such a comment, I hope someone will learn something from my opinion. The stock market is based purely on speculation and opinion. For this reason, any changes to perception affects the stock market in the way assuming Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac are in trouble shook the markets last week. Showing the world we are taking active steps to address the fuel crisis(ie: allowing drilling in ANWR) should lower the increasing fuel prices. I could go on, but I think I bore most of the readers here.

Off shore drilling will not significantly bring down the price of gas. Off shore Drilling was banned for a reason. The oil companies own hundreds of acres all over this world and they only drilling a small portion of that. If Americans, or any other country, want to see the price of gas go down by more than 20 cents then the oil companies need to tap what they have not used.

Unfortunately, this probably won't happen unless these oil business men are forced to drill by the government. These jerks are making a shit load of money, Why should they drill more and make less?

      So…

we will continue to pay up the ass for gas until a politician (it doesn't really matter who) gets a clue.

Opening up to offshore drilling will do absolutely nothing to lower prices in the near or even mid term (5-7 years). It will take several years to just build the rigs that are needed to tap into the oil that may or may not be out there. If we do start increasing production via these wells (many, many years from now) OPEC will just slow down production on thier end. No matter how much we produce prices will never go back down to a manageable price per barrel. The Big Oil co's have made too much at this point and they are not going to let the price per barrel plummet. Be are all SCREWED no matter what.

this is a VERY BAD idea. there is a limited amount of oil. there are limited amounts of resources in our oceans (even if we can't count them). this WILL hurt our oceans irrevocably, not to mention the air. and it will NOT have an effect on our pocketbooks. oil is finite gang - the price of oil is driven by how much oil remains. taking some away isn't going to help prices ultimately! PLEASE WRITE TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVES AND SUGGEST THAT THEY CONSIDER ANY NUMBER OF OTHER WAYS TO ADDRESS OUR CURRENT CRISIS.

It is definitely PART of the answer. Americans have to grow up and start making some hard decisions. OPEC is a "cartel"–formed for the specific purpose of controlling a product and its supply–look at OPEC's original charter–they state it expressly. While we work on alternatives, we also have to start providing our own supply–if OPEC nations see we're drilling again, they'll have to start lowering the price to sell the oil they've got NOW–they can't leave it in the ground and hope for a higher price 10 years from now.
Plus, the Chinese are ALREADY slant-drilling in the Gulf of Mexico from Cuban water. Do we just let the rest of the world take it so we can seem nice??!!??

Re: Thank – Thanks! Its so hard reading some of this idiotic shit. I work in the environmental field…that doesn't mean I'm a dumb liberal, it means I am listening to SCIENCE and FACTS about this stuff. Ridiculous what some Americans can be made to believe. Talk about why oil companies are STILL getting tax cuts and subsidies, but the government can't pass tax credits for solar and wind, 2 huge hopes for the future. People want to blame liberals for everything. Well, "liberals ended slavery, Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created social security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act." (WW). So yea, I'm kinda proud to be a liberal, and I know compromise is good too, but most important IS KNOWING THE FACTS before having an opinion on it and VOTING for an incompetent, soulless asshole and his crony.

      216

As others have said, this is not a solution because even if a significant amount of oil is found, producing and refining it will take at least ten years to fully get it to the market. (this is confirmed by the big oil companies) The next problem is the fact that it will still nonetheless be a small percentage of the total oil in the country. What does this mean? Gas prices will marginally be affected by it. So no, it is not a solution, and this is blatantly obvious.

Americans will simply jump onto a possible solution even though if you research the facts on offshore drilling, you will find that it won't affect anything whatsoever. (except possible harm to the environment, and a small percentage contributed to the oil here)

There are certain areas which the environ. study has been done and impact would be minimal. We need to be more self-sufficient again. When some crazy countires have us by the short and curlies, that is not good. We are an oil rich country, and we all agree that we do not want to devastate our wilderness and dwindling wide open spaces … but there are 2 sides to a coin, and often we have become victims of our own laws which were first established to protect us.

      you should know!
      .

Drew Johnson of the TN Center For
Policy Research did a study of Al Gore's
mansion in TN to see how much energy
"Mr. Global Warming" Gore was using
      just one of his mansions.

Al Gore's energy use per year is over
      213,000 kilowatt hours per year,
which is enough for 232 average
      American households!

      Big Al consumes approx.
      17,000 kilowatt hours per month,
      while the average household consumes
      approx. 11,000 kilowatt hours of
      energy A YEAR!

Another fun fact is that Al
"Mr. Green Jeans" Gore has made
      approx. 100 million dollars since
      he started his Global Warming
      hysteria tour.

THIS IS NOT THE ANSWER. Oil is going to run out eventually anyway, so instead of spoiling our coastlines by adding rigs and possible oil spills we should be developing alternative fuels and hybrid and electric vehicles and all that good stuff. The government should just start releasing oil from the strategic petroleum reserve to help in the short term anyway, since that oil would be on the market in as little as two weeks while oil from new drilling off the US coastline wouldn't be on the market for four to five years.

This is Georgey Boy's way of flirting with the morons of this country (unfortunately they are the majority). Have more oil will do NOTHING to lower gas prices. Our refineries are already at capacity, and since it takes about 10 years to build a refinery, have more oil and no capability to convert it into gasoline will not drive up supply. Therefore, no change in gas price. Hey, maybe those $150 billion tax cuts we've been giving the oil companies these last 7 1/2 years could have been better spent building refineries or better yet investing in renewable resources. f***ing morons!

Bush - in his final months in office - having already rewarded the traditional Republican backers in the military-industrial complex - and have stood by - giggling - while the oil companies claimed a shortage - increased prices at a greater percentage - almost a 100 percent - than any other Administration - and - the recorded the greatest profits in history - ever for any company. There is no shortage - there was no shortage - a shortage means rationing - long lines - curtailed driving - a shortage does not mean increasing prices by a 100 percent and then make the greatest profits ever. Amazingly - there is nothing - NOTHING - in this proposal that would in any way assure the taxpayers that if they risk their shorelines and wilderness - that the price of oil will go down. It was not enough for Bush to destroy the country financially - to spiral us into massive debt and a war we have yet to pay for - no, he has to physically destroy it as well. How Bush must hate America - and especially hate his increasingly stupid supporters - I wonder how many days - minutes - it will be when he leaves the White House before he moves to the Middle East to retire.

Shit like that only fuels fires, doesn't help at all. I am liberal but I think both parties, especially the republicans, are only interested in helping out the lobbyists that bribe them with money. It happens on both sides. Nothing is being helped by you sharing your own personal fucked up beliefs that democrats are excited about making people poor. By the way, your conservative buddies in the white house salivate at the thought of phasing out the middle class all together so that people are either poor or rich. Sorry, had to come back at ya. and offshore drilling is most certainly not the answer to combating global warming or diminishing America's dependence on foreign oil.
even if offshore drilling is successful, it would take 10+ years to see actual results, aka gas that can be used by regular consumers
the solution is in weaning ourselves off diesel from the getgo; pass a bill that supports research on alternative fuels!!!!!

Reducing tax cuts to offshore drilling companies will make no difference, the consumer will pay the bill in the end. Patents for fuel efficient motors and fossil fuel alternatives are purchased and held by the largest petroleum companies.

Increased drilling in GOM will not decrease fuel prices either, as cost of drilling is extremely high. Just as the prices of goods for the consumers are increasing in this economy… services and goods that are used by the drilling companies are increasing as well…
