The ABCs of Gay TV

Filed under: TV News > Gay Gay Gay

wenn5138156.jpg

The second annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Network Responsibility Index just performed its first ever ranking of TV networks and their gay friendliness.

FX wax named the most responsible channel by GLAAD from the group of cable networks.

ABC was awarded first place again with the best ranking among broadcasters with 24% of its programing hours being considered "inclusive." ABC even portrayed the first gay marriage on television on its hit series Brothers & Sisters.

As for Fox, it was ranked the worst.

GLAAD's rating index "sought to gauge the quantity, quality and diversity of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people on television."

Coming in second place, with 21%, was the CW which was also found to be the most ethnically diverse broadcast network.

Of the reaming main five broadcast network stations, CBS was rated "adequate", while NBC was rated "failing" followed by Fox at the very end.

As for cable, FX came at the top followed by HBO which was classified as the most diverse station on cable.

And out of the remaining 10 most watched cable networks, Spike, TBS, A&E, USA, and TNT were all ranked "failing."

One trend they did spot was that most of the gays portrayed on TV were men. White men.

It's about time more stations start to diversify!

Just a little note: Brothers and Sisters is NOT the first TV show to, err, show a gay marriage. If I recall correctly Six Feet Under featured that in the series finale.

    47

Maybe Perez meant that Brothers and Sisters was the first network, prime-time TV program to show a gay marriage ceremony between two main characters? Cable programming is not network programming and the other shows were a gay ceremony was depicted (i.e. Friends) involved tertiary characters.

Re: Oxymo – I think is insane to vote or not vote for someone because of one thing you disagree with. I disagree with many things from both of them, but we all have to choose which one has some of the same views we do.

WHY DO PEOPLE EVEN CARE ? LOGO is "the gay channel"- but did Gay folks REALLY need their own station?! I mean Equal is Equal. When you go asking for something "because you're different" you DON'T WANT TO BE EQUAL- Give it a rest! Then someone is always demanding celebs to out themselves. I don't care. Hollywood was a better place when celebs business stayed out of the media, that's why it's been reduced to a high-class ghetto baby-mama mecca, drugged-out, crunk-a-lunk, rehab drama camp, who's in who's out SLUMTOWN. Can a network broadcast a REAL show and drop this trash TV reality BS? One's sexuality and lifestyle preference are the LAST things to enter my mind when it comes to TV. I'm not gay- I JUST WANT TO WATCH TV!!!

LOL- wouldn't that make for a perfect world if people would STFU and keep their business mum?!?!?
NOOOO they have to sing it from the rafters because if they didn't….we might not know they're gay at all. People are INSECURE about it- but the idea of GAY PRIDE forces them to tell the world-then when they end up crumpled over in an alley beat down- it's DISCRIMINATION! WTF asked them to wear it like a shield? Especially if it can't protect them from the people who HATE them for it. I'm taking the damn rainbow back too!

IDIOTS. Gays are only a FREAKING SMALL MINORITY, so maybe there is a reason why GAYS ARE A FREAKING SMALL MINORITY on television as well. Get over it. An overwhelming majority of people is straight. Don't you realize that when you bitch and bitch and bitch and bitch about your TV 'gay friendliness', you only harm yourself.

It irritates me how everything has to be "diverse" now. I mean, if they pitched the idea of a show similar to 7th heaven nowadays, they'd be told that it was not possible to have a white couple with 7 white children. One of them would have to be an asian, so the show was "diverse".
I'm gay, but I don't feel the need for gay characters to be included in a perfect ratio. I mean, it's quite possible for there to be a family or group of people that are all straight, happens all the time, If there's a gay character on tv, cool, ’cause yeah, there are plenty of gay people out there, so it makes sense that there'd be one on tv sometimes, but if there was a tv show without a gay person, i'd be just as cool with that. People need to stop being so fucking stupid.

I few GLAAD with part awe, part revulsion.
They are such a deviously smart, organized propaganda machine. They exist to make sure that every last human being believes that homosexuality is normal, through constant visual saturation, and through the"quality of images".
If I ever become rich, I'm going to produce a movie that depicts a homosexual who is saved from it, and changes his lifestyle completely.
    Guess what?
    It's a true story.
    Guess what else?
Despite that it's true, and despite the fact that, according to Hollywood and free speech, I have the right to tell any story I want, I would would be attacked by the gay community. Why? Because that story doesn't fit their agenda.
GLAAD is a well oiled machine. There, to push their message, and there to beat-down anyone with an opposing one.
