Coming Back To Broadway!!!

Yes. Si. YES!!!
While shittier shows get revived way too often, West Side Story has not been on Broadway in like f-o-r-e-v-e-r.
Well, thankfully, that's all about to change!
A new production of West Side Story is scheduled to open on the Great White Way in 2009, it has just been announced.
Such an epic show!
And, this revival will have a little more flavor than any other production of the classic has ever had.
It "will introduce the unprecedented element" of selectively adding Spanish to the dialogue and songs!

Show director Arthur Laurents, who wrote the book for the musical way bak in the day, has said, "This show will be radically different from any other production of West Side Story ever done. The musical theatre and cultural conventions of 1957 made it next to impossible for the characters to have authenticity. Every member of both gangs was always a potential killer even then. Now they actually will be. Only Tony and Maria try to live in a different world…"
Laurents' West Side Story will have an onstage cast of 37 and 30 musicians in the orchestra pit.
Casting information and onsale date for tickets will be announced at a later date.

i'm excited about this revival! i dont know about Eden Espinosa as a choice for maria tho. i dont know if she has the soprano range to handle the part. i might be wrong. i haven't heard her sing that high yet.

Eden Espinosa is great as Elphaba (in Wicked) but I'm not sure she could sing Maria - it's for a soprano. But maybe she could!

Sweetie, Eden is amazing, but not a lyric soprano, which the role of Maria DEMANDS. She's also just not an ingenue. Just because she's a talented Latina doesn't mean she's the only one for the role, honey.
She might make a good Anita vocally, but Anita is traditionally a strong dance role.
I'm glad it's getting revived, but I don't think there are any shitty revivals on Broadway.
Sure, the Grease one looks okay.
But just look at Gypsy! The one revival I want to see. Of course, that's all because of my idol, Ms. LuPone.

Caitlin Hales, the extremely talented star of Lil Abner and South Pacific, is the only actress capable of playing the beautiful Maria. Although she is not hispanic, her acting transcends racial boundaries, and she would leave the audience with their jaws in their laps. The producers would be very lucky to obtain such a talent for this show.
Oh my, I really hope that they choose a better actress than Eden Espinosa. Doesn't anyone remember "Brooklyn"?

i think eden can dance cuz when she was a standby in Wicked standbys are also in the ensemble too so eden is probably trained in like modern or whatever cuz the ensemble dances in Wicked are hard and nobody is usually paying attention to them that much

OMG! Perez, I love that you know Eden… she is truly one of the best live voices ever…. I think she would be perfect as Maria… She looks like she is twelve with no make-up for those who think she is too old… And, for those who think she can't hang with the voice obviously have not heard her in anything but Wicked. She was amazing in Flora the Red Menace as well, and can definitely sing the soprano parts. Love her, love her, love her! Amazing actress, amazing voice!!!
I love the music in "Westside Story." It is time less!!! I used to listen to it when I came home from school (oh, oh, I am "dating" myself; meaning I am not a young person). I love those show tune movies… Bring it back!!!

I'm stoked. I'm not sold on Eden though. I doubt she has the soprano range to pull it off without some noticeable straining. When she did Elphaba she was straining her voice (though just slightly) to hit some of those notes in Defying Gravity and that song is only high if you have a mezzo-soprano voice (which is why the current German Elphaba, who is a soprano, is one of the best because her voice doesn't strain AT all). So I would say that Eden wouldn't have the voice for the role. Besides, I think they should hold open auditions and try to find people closer to the age of the roles to play them (and I will totally audition if they do hold open casting calls!).
I've heard that it is almost certain that Maria will be Lea Michele [Spring Awakening] and Tony will be Aaron Tveit [Wicked] Eden would be great, but I think she's too old, if Andrea Burns [In the Heights] was younger she'd be an excellent Anita

This is high acting at its best, no second chance, no second take, an actor has one chance to get it right and most of the time they do. It really is an amazing experience that everyone should do at least once.
