What Was She Thinking?

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Wacky, Tacky & True > Politik

dole.jpg

North Carolina's Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole introduced an amendment to name an HIV/AIDS relief bill after her predecessor, the recently deceased Jesse Helms.

Say what???? Is this bitch hopped up on meds and totally cuhrazeee?????

Helms was a foe of HIV/AIDS prevention, research and treatment. And that's putting it mildly!

Here are some highlights from Helms' notable moments in AIDS relief:

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1987 described AIDS prevention literature as "so obscene, so revolting, I may throw up."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1988 vigorously opposed the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS research bill, saying, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1995 said (in opposition to refunding the Ryan White Act) that the government should spend less on people with AIDS because they got sick due to their "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 2002 announced that he'd changed his mind about AIDS funding for Africa, but not for American gays, because homosexuality "is the primary cause of the doubling and redoubling of AIDS cases in the United States."

Is Senator Dole going out of her way to insult the honorable work of AIDS researchers and activists?

If we were a citizen of North Carolina, we'd be concerned/embarrassed that Lizzie Dole was our rep.

Smells like someone with bad judgement to us!

The Republican party and their "conservative/hateful" ways are diminishing because today's youth is so open minded and much more accepting to one's differences.

Perez, maybe that is the point of her naming it after him! Maybe it is in direct acknowledgement of his ignorant legacy. Kind of like naming a bill that legalizes same-sex marriage after Larry Craig! Get it???? Although we ARE talking about Elizabeth Dole….

Being from North Carolina, I have to say that Jessie Helms was a very, very OLD man, and he was raised with those beliefs, lots of the old people here in the south were. Not saying its right in current times, but back then, that's just how things were. Mrs. Dole just wants to honor the guy who was a senator for a hundred years, she's a good woman, and a good senator.

I guess right after someone dies from the senate, the senate names a bill after them. Maybe she hated him. He was the type that would think that an aids bill named after him would give him the disease. he is probably is turning in his grave with the thought. I say name it after him, as a reminder how small minded some people think

i have to agree that the woman is giving the old fucker a piece of her mind; naming a bill after the pig would make him turn in his grave.

Case, I wouldn't try to explain it to the intellectuals who visit this site. You're right, she's paying homage to a guy who was a public servant in the state for decades. This is just another example of an extreme reaction to a situation that doesn't deserve one. These readers don't understand the idea that someone can be inculcated with a certain belief system. Elizabeth Dole is one of the finest public servants this country has ever seen.

although highly unlikely, it is possible that dole was attempting to get back at helms for all of his negative remarks by attaching his name to something positive. he was obviously wrong for being so anti-aids/hiv prevention and he was obviously just stupid.

Re: j – I totally agree. I think it's great. It shows the other haters out there that spending all of your energy on hating people isn't going to get you ANYWHERE in this life, or after you're dead. Maybe they should start legalizing gay marriage everywhere and call it the Fred Phelps Equality Law or something. Look it up, people.

WAY TO TALK BAD ABOUT SOMEONE WHO'S RECENTLY PASSED .

I'M SURE YOU WOULD NEVER SAY SUCH THINGS ABOUT OTHERS THAT HAVE DIED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, EXPECIALLY THOSE WHO MOST OF YOU LOOK UP TO. HAVE SOME RESPECT.

BE PROUD OF YOUR PAST B/C I'M PRETTY SURE YOUR ELDERS WOULD SAY THE SAME THINGS HE DID.

AND THINGS WERE A LOT BETTER BACK THEN!

Elizabeth Dole is a respected senator. Just because she's republican doesn't mean she's the devil. She's thumbing her nose at him and his ignorant stances. It's just like the satire that went over your head with the New Yorker front page. Read the whole story, not just the part that lets you get on your soap box to preach. Stay out of politics.

Actually, it's how you choose to look at this situation. I choose to see it like this: This bill's benefits are two-fold. First it helps people with HIV/AIDS by funding research for the disease and 2nd, it is named after him which gives a high-pitched FUCK YOU! to Jesse Helms and is piece-O-shit memory. Terrific. Terrific. Exactly what he deserves.

Once again, Perez is reading liberal gay news sites and not getting or giving the whole story. In 2000, Helms co-authored legislation that put $600 million towards fighting AIDS in Africa. At the time, he said he was embarassed that he had fought against AIDS funding prior to that and promised to spend his remaining time in the Senate working for the cause, which he did. My guess is that Dole's work on the AIDS funding bill is the keeping of a promise she made to him to continue that work.

I am not a bit surprised. Jesse Helms was always a huge embarrassment to NC and so is Elizabeth Dole. They are both very racist, hypocritical bigots. I am from NC and even though Jesse Helms came from a generation that believed in racial division he went overboard with his views and thoughts. I would cringe everytime he was mentioned in the news and was thoroughly disgusted to have him represent this beautiful state as our senator. Elizabeth Dole has done absolutely NOTHING for this state either. I hope she loses her senate seat in the upcoming election because she certainly doesn't deserve to maintain it.
