What Was She Thinking?

North Carolina's Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole introduced an amendment to name an HIV/AIDS relief bill after her predecessor, the recently deceased Jesse Helms.

Say what???? Is this bitch hopped up on meds and totally cuhrazeee?????

Helms was a foe of HIV/AIDS prevention, research and treatment. And that's putting it mildly!

Here are some highlights from Helms' notable moments in AIDS relief:

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1987 described AIDS prevention literature as "so obscene, so revolting, I may throw up."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1988 vigorously opposed the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS research bill, saying, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1995 said (in opposition to refunding the Ryan White Act) that the government should spend less on people with AIDS because they got sick due to their "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 2002 announced that he'd changed his mind about AIDS funding for Africa, but not for American gays, because homosexuality "is the primary cause of the doubling and redoubling of AIDS cases in the United States."

Is Senator Dole going out of her way to insult the honorable work of AIDS researchers and activists?

If we were a citizen of North Carolina, we'd be concerned/embarrassed that Lizzie Dole was our rep.

Smells like someone with bad judgement to us!

Ah, yes, Elizabeth Dole: oafish and bone-headed as usual. The Jesse Helms AIDS Relief Bill??!!! That's like calling a Holocaust Survivors relief bill after Hitler. Freaking grotesque. (Oh, and FYI: Lizzie Dole wouldn't know irony if it leapt up her ass.)

Are you certain the ammendment is a negative one?
If it's not: the name is pure fucking genius!
Like when the KKK insisted on sponsoring a stretch of highway, the State tried to ban it, the KKK won… and in retribution the State named it "The Rosa Parks Highway". A bunch of redneck racists paying to pick up trash from a stretch of Highway honouring one of the key players in the Civil Rights Movement. Perfection.

either way no one will really care what some no name senator from some state that no one (outside of the US) knows has to say about HIV AIDS. this is a worldwide issue and until someone finds a cure no one will really know who is researching it or what funding that they are getting. lets just focus on the issue itself and not what goes on around it.

trust me- you have no idea how embarrassed we are from NC. i don't know why Dole even wanted to be in our state, and most of us sure as hell aren't sad the "Uncle Jesse" Helms is gone. he was a disgrace and was everything our civil liberties stood against. and this is coming from a white, southern, christian, rich girl. Jesse, you've got a lot of repenting to do.

I think that sometimes the people who claim to be the most open-minded (aka you, Perez) are actually the most close minded people I've ever met. Jesse Helms had traditional beliefs, as does Mrs. Dole. I'm from NC and she's a fantastic woman, and a fantastic senator.

Maybe you should just keep your liberal opinions to yourself, and let everyone else do the same. All you're doing/all you ever do when you mention politics on this website is make things worse.

Ummm…im from north carolina and all I have ever seen from Senator Helms is negativity. The man was old, racist, and small-minded. I hope we get his successor, Miss Dole, out of office this year. Make North Carolina a BLUE STATE in '08!!!!

I say she's doing it in spite of him, not to honor him. As an acknowledgement of his ignorance. Way to go Mrs. Dole!

Re: pejay – Not that I am condoning what Miss Dole did, but I will take up for my state. North Carolina is FAR from no name!!! Best schools in the nation, best hospitals, home of research triangle park ( where leading technology research is done), plus ALOT more. Get your facts straight!

I live in North Carolina and I am not too happy about that. Elizabeth Dole sucks. Perez does not suck though, you are awesome. I love you and so does Brodie…he's one. He really like the Sesame Street clip you put up the other day.

republicans are the worst of america. they have slowly distroyed this country over the past 50 year. they are angry war mongers.

They wouldn't address aids in the beginning when they thought it was a gay and black only disease. Now those assholes name this after the biggest racist and hinderance to a cure.
