Boxer Suffers Severe Head Injury

diazzz.jpg

Wednesday night, welterweight Oscar Diaz (above right) collapsed in his corner after the 10th round of a fight.

Star Boxing chief Joe DeGuardia said when Diaz "left the ring, he was completely stationary and he didn't look good. They couldn't get him to respond. They cleared a path right away and took him to the hospital."

Today, Diaz remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery overnight on his brain to relieve swelling.

He remains in heavy sedation following the operation, but he is not in a medically induced coma.

Ron Katz, promoter of Star Boxing, said "Oscar came through surgery well. They had to remove the left side of his cranium in order to help the swelling go down, which apparently was very bad."

He adds that Diaz "had a subdural hematoma [bleeding on the brain], which was taken care of. During surgery, he apparently showed movement in his arms and his brain pressure was very good, according to the doctor."

Let's hope he recovers quickly.

Sending him our positive thoughts!

I have known oscar since HS, and this guy is a great person and was on the the comeback and was hopeing for a bigger fight after this, man this sucks, cause he had taken some time off from boxing, he had lost his dad and was dedicating the rest of his boxing career to his dad. This is horrible, I was watching the fight on espn 2 , I swear I felt they should have stopped his fight, he could not defend himself, Oscar's eye was all swollen!

Why the hell is boxing a legal sport? Isn't it the equivalent of human dog fighting? Of course, I guess it's also thinning the heard - anyone who willingly gets into a ring, knowing that his opponents only goal is to bash his head in, gets what he deserves. Sorry - don't feel a bit sorry for these people.

OMG whats up with this "sending him our positive thoughts". I am so SICK of that saying. how in the hell is that supposed to help anyone? Positive thoughts?? Oh come now, you mean you wont send your negative thougths because "our thoughts can cure or harm the ones we send them to"??? this is so stupid. how bout you just say "I'll pray for the dude" and then do it. I HATE PC crap! And Im sending you my negative thoughts on that one buddy. How STOOOOP!

  24. jstud says – reply to this

    24

Problem is that your "positive thoughts" involve giving a BJ to a dude so I'm sure he'll pass.

I can't believe your talking about this story? Thanks for the support. I'm also a fellow classmate. He's class of 2001 and went to school in San Antonio TX. We are hoping he pulls through.

  26. shari says – reply to this

    26

So, let's see. You get into a ring with a huge person with huge gloves on, you sign up to get the ever loving crap beaten out of you until you either collapse or are knocked out, and then it's news if you are in a coma or need brain surgery? can you run that by me one more time?

  27. Lawla says – reply to this

    27

When are we going to become civilized to the point where we no longer view two men beating each other bloody and, as in the instant case, nearly to death, as a "sport" for public entertainment. We have progressed beyond allowing public hangings, floggings, burnings at the stake and torture in the public square to entertain the masses. Dog fighting and cock fighting are illegal, isn't it about time this barbaric dangerous practice was relegated to its rightful place along side the other shameful practices of man's mistreatment of man in history?

  28. Harry says – reply to this

    28

Many have suffered the same fate and worse. Any doctor knows that a blow to the head can cause a very grave injury to the brain. For two strong men to deliberately punch each other repeatedly and fiercely in the head doesn't even make sense. Why would anyone want to be guilty of inducing a hematoma in another's brain? And all the fans screaming for blood? You could blame it on mass insanity, but it's not insanity, it's cruelty. This is on a par with the Roman games.

    30

Wow I can't believe this story in on here. I was at the fight last night and I still feel like an ass for going. He was outmatched in every way. His trainer should have called the fight long before it happened and the ref should have been able to tell it was time to stop the fight. Everyone was just staring and videotaping with their phones. It was insane. All those people are going to Hell. I'll never go to another fight. There were people saying "Wouldn't it be some s–t if he died and we got to put it on youtube."

  31. Vanes says – reply to this

  32. miche says – reply to this

    32

I don't get how this is a sport

  33. LETS says – reply to this

    33

Honestly, we should all hope he DIES. Cause that might send a strong message that boxing is dumb and dangerous and not "entertainment", and not something people should dress up in tuxcedos in Las Vegas to pay to watch like it's some sophisticated theatre event. If he just lives as a vegetable, people will forget, but if he DIES, it might save other lives.

    Re: ChopC
Boxing is an idiotic sport, very much like cockfighting and dogfighting. Barbaric. Lame. Brutish. Why even do it?

I feel sorry that Oscar is in rough shape, with the same sympathy as I would show anyone, but I agree w/ Chop C that it is a dangerous, and stupid sport.

  39. Emily says – reply to this

    39

LETS> How the hell can you hope that a person dies?? I dont personally know the guy but I'm human enough to hope that he gets better, yeah boxing is a dangerous sport but these guys go into it knowing what they're doing, that doesnt mean you should hope they die, that would be like saying " I hope you die when you go to the club tonight because a lot of drunk drivers are out at night, that would teach all of us a lesson" Stupid, yes. He's at one of the best head trauma centers here in san antonio and yeah there are a lot of people hoping and praying that he SURVIVES, because that's compassion, to care, not to hope people die you sorry piece of shit.
Perez, I'm pretty sure he's the guy on the left.

Re: Pat – I totally know what his family is going through right now. Although I do agree that boxing is absolutely dumb. My mom is suffereing right now of the same thing. Except hers was from falling down the stairs. I wouldn't want to wish this on anyone. This has been the hardest month of my life and it's only going to get harder. My mom is slowly coming off of the vent now. She opens her eyes and moves her left side but can't move a thing on her right side. I know his family must feel so helpless right now. It is such a long long road to recovery with a brain injury. I wish his family and him well.

    44

Do any of you actually know anything about this physical chess match other than maybe crushing on an occasional hot fighter or from hearing about the latest Tyson drama?
Pay attention and get informed; If anything these people should be bitching to their state senators to push for federal boxing legislation. People need to start looking at the fucking head hunting promoters, the foul sanctioning bodies (Does anyone who made a smart ass comment know what a sanctioning body is?!), and the networks who do NOTHING to promote the better interests of these athletes. That's right- No union, no healthcare plans, no pensions, no financial education, et cetera et cetera. This sweet science has been around for way longer than the NFL, the NBA, or the MLB, when will it get the recognition it deserves?
99% of the money made in this sport goes to 1% of the fighters-
Greed is to blame not the fighters. They are merely doing a job, just another day at the office.
Please check out and support orgs like the Retired Boxer's Foundation so perhaps next time the ice will be melted awat from your cold little hearts and you can speak on something you actually know about.

I realize that a lot of people love boxing, but any "sport" where the object is for one human being to cause concussions and brain swelling in another human being seems kinda barbaric.

He still made SAN ANTONIO proud as a local fighter ! Get well from all your Fans, Neighbors, Family & Friends. It's sad that this happened but at least he's in a GREAT city that will love him and support him through his recovery ! Ask Emilo !

  56. Sunsh says – reply to this

    56

The sad thing is if he recoveres he will have a brain injury for sure. it all depends on how long the swelling in his head lasted for! The longer , worse off it is! Poor Guy!

  57. 57

The family is requesting prayers for him, what the hell for!?!?!?!!!?!!!?? I wouldnt waste my time praying for some idiot that went out of their way to get their head punched in. I 'll save my praying time for someone who didnt bring unfortunate circumstances upon themselves thanks. What a fuckin' loser.

Re: LETS – Death will not stop this sport in view of the fact that quite a few boxers have died due to the sport. Wishing for this poor boxers death is sickening to say the least! You obviously lack any moral decency so perhaps it's your death we should wish for instead.
BTW…Mr. Diaz is the boxer on the left in the posted pic.
