The Olsens Are Likely To Cause Cancer

Filed under: Beauty Buzz > Olsen Twins

mkasholsenhazard.jpg

Fur wearing Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen aren't only hazardous to the health of cute, little animals.

Looks like they could be promoting products that put human life in danger!

According to the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, the Olsen twins have licensed their names to fragrance products deemed "high hazards" on the group's safety list!!

MK and Ash's body sprays and perfumes are laced with known carcinogens.

Cancer in a bottle?!

Eeeks!

You might want to see how your your fave cosmetic products rate on the group's list.

Did you know that the unfortunate reality is that the government does not currently require health studies or pre-market testing for products before they are sold????

According to the FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors, the "FDA cannot require companies to do safety testing of their cosmetic products before manufacturing," AND "…a cosmetic manufacturer may use almost any raw material as a cosmetic ingredient and market the product without an approval from FDA."

Yikes!

Update: On Monday, the lawyers for Coty, the company who manufactures the Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen products rated by the Environmental Working Group issued the following statement to PerezHilton.com:

All Mary-Kate & Ashley fragrance products manufactured and distributed worldwide by Coty Inc. have been formulated with the highest quality raw materials with well established safety records. The products as well as each of the ingredients contained in the products comply with all applicable laws, rules and regulations and all established scientific safety standards in every country where such products are sold or distributed, including the regulations established by the FDA in the United States, by Health Canada in that country and by the European Union through the European Cosmetics Directive. Ingredients utilized by Coty in such products were and always have been chosen based not only on their physical and chemical characteristics but also, and more importantly, because they are known to be safe and effective. The Mary-Kate & Ashley products have been clinically proven to be safe when used as directed. Petitions filed with the FDA and reports issued most recently in 2005 by the Environmental Working Group and the allegations contained therein regarding the Mary-Kate & Ashley (and other Coty) products are without merit and are based on information which is not either scientifically or statistically reliable.

Coty Inc. is committed to using only the safest ingredients in our products and we consistently work to maintain the highest possible standards of safety for our consumers. Furthermore we select and use the highest quality raw materials with well established safety records and thoroughly test the safety of our products before they are sold in the marketplace.

i look at that site often, and nearly every beauty product — even the organic or "natural" ones — show traces of carcinogens or things that will affect the reproductive system. i bet most fragrances get a "7" or above rating on that site because they're full of preservatives. mk and ash aren't unique.

Yep, and when it says "NON TOXIC" on, either chidlren's or adult products, all it means is that there is no data, which means, it hasnt been tested. check OSHA, one can find plenty of interesting things there, that would make ur hair stand on end.

That is so cool that you are promoting awareness to the crap they put in their products, I'm sure MK & A don't really know what is in their products but they should know and care and change it! Get rid of toxic glitter lotions, I'm sure they are not wearing their own stuff!!!!

That is an awesome website and many products claim that they are "natural & organic" (aveeno, etc.) they may have 1 or 2 natural ingredients but are still chucked full of parabens and other carcinogens!

There is some good stuff that has wonderful scents and ingredients, Pharmacopia, Pangea, and many more……..

Not only that, If you research into brands that promote healthy skin, such as Vichy and Physicians formula, You'll find their products are hazardous! Then if you look up Covergirl you'll discover their products are tested on animals! Even the queen collection. Not looking to good for Drew Barrymore or Queen Latifah.

Ugh… this really sucks living in such a fearful world where we now have to worry about cosmetic products. Seriously, while most of this is understandable, it seems like such a headache.

Most of the products I use are a moderate hazard, and even that scares me considering I've battled cancer before.

Just so you know, that website lists ALL cosmetics from almost every brand, and the website in question simply evaluates each individual ingredient separately and then gives an overall rating based on the relative risk of each ingredient. Yes, they are ranked very high, but I think it's ridiculous that they are being singled out. How about you take a stab at other companies (who are even larger, such as cover girl, neutrogena and revlon) whose products contain ingredients that are equally as dangerous. Read up on the regulations, and you'll see that most fragrances are not required by law to provide the ingredients of the actual fragrance or musk because of trade secrets, so no one but the companies knows what's in them, so they aren't properly regulated.

Perez, stick to doing what you do best — stuffing your fat, ugly face. This is really despicable. Every product makes their list! I mean let's be honest…it's hard NOT to find ANY product these days that is not somehow dangerous. Then a week later, the news will tell us that the product actually helps us. It's all bull. So are you.

The Olsen's should sue your fat ass of for slander.

Thanks for bringing attention to this website. It's a great resource. But all synthetic perfumes contain carcinogens, Perez. And, it's silly to single out the Olsens. You are just looking for things to pick on. If you want to talk about dangerous celebrity perfumes, J. Lo's Miami Glow EDT it actually the worst of all. It got a 10 out of 10. If you want a safe scent use essential oils.

Re: drew – Hundreds of years? You're obviously misinformed. Perfumes have not always been made with what there made with now, nor have beauty products. There are all sorts of synthetic additives that there were no machine to make 'hundreds of years' ago. Do a little research before you accuse a reputable, extremely helpful website of 'shady' science. What have you done for humanity lately? Voted republican obviously.

@Drew–Misin already touched on some of this. The EWG website is based on science and yes, products have changed considerably in the last 50 years. What else has changed? Oh yeah, the rate of cancer has exploded. Obviously, not everyone will get cancer simply from using a product with a high hazard, but it's worth being informed about.

If you think there is "testing" to protect you before these products hit the market, then you are precisely the customer they are looking for–an uniformed one.

Perez-I think it is awesome that you are posting this (although the Olsen connection is weak) because it puts it out there for people to make educated decisions.

There is already legislation in progress to regulate cosmetics (FDA Globalization Act). And it's in the process of being stopped. Additionally, Perez is COMPLETELY wrong on his info. I know this because I manufacture soaps and cosmetics. You CANNOT buy ANYTHING off the shelf without a preservative because it will mold within days, without a preservative. Almost all liquid products are made with water, which, when bottled up with any other ingredient will form bacteria. Did you also know the naturally occurring Eucalyptus oil can cause lung damage in children? There is no such thing as all natural unless you make it yourself, the same day from PLANTS you grow yourself. The legislation that Perez so idiotically points out that is lacking is NOT that you can toss anything in there and sell it, because of insurance. You wouldn't be covered by any old company that will pay out if you through gas into a spray bottle. Get a clue.

The Environmental Working Group has done a HUGE service by putting together that cosmetics database. I use it all the time and it has totally changed the products that I purchase for myself and my family. I'm so glad that it's getting so much recognition lately. California thankfully, is on the move with regulation of the cosmetics industry, with SB 484. Basically it will require any cosmetics manufacturer selling in California to report to the Dept. of Public Health any ingredient on state lists (like Prop. 65) any ingredient linked to cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm. Arnold signed it into law–which so far is the strongest protection we have so far. This is the tip of the iceberg peeps–check out a national group that's making sure our products aren't toxic: The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. www.safecosmetics.org
