phenomenal. it definitely didn't disappoint. it was totally worth the wait.

  12. Heath says – reply to this

I think you were way off base! I thought Heath ledger MADE this film and was brilliant. His character wasn't supposed to have growth…he was just supposed to be ruthless and psychotic. I don't know what movie you were watching but I thought it was wonderful and I think that Heath Ledger was amazing. The whole point of these new batman movies is to make them darker and not so much like the borrowing cartoon-like versions. I thought it brought reality to the comic and made it much more enjoyable. It's my opinion and I find it sad that you didn't appreciate Heath Ledger's amazing and unforgettable performance.

  13. chels says – reply to this

    holy crap FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. mop4l says – reply to this

I loved the movie. I disagree that there was no character development. Heath was unbelievable as the Joker. I wonder if we saw the same movie.

  15. sista says – reply to this

i liked it. the joker was good. it was kind of long tho. i thought it was over when the guys face caught on fire, but it went on like another hour. : )

I stopped listening to you after two minutes - you are very inarticulate.
Think I'll take my critiques from the professionals thanks. Sounds like you would have liked a tap dance routine in the middle? Stick with Mamma Mia.

  18. Chris says – reply to this

yeah i def. agree with some stuff u said, however, ledgers performance was unparalleled. it was very good and for sure the most intricate super hero movie. maybe too long and not enough christian bale. maggie was okay, dent good, bale very good, ledger stupendeous!

  19. 19

The movie was Fabo! Much more like the comics, dark.

  20. Jen says – reply to this

The movie was amazing, had me on the edge of my seat for the whole 2.5 hours or so. Every actor brought something great to the screen. Heath Ledger blew my mind with his performance and definately would not have been the same without him in this flick. Christian Bale, well what can i say, he was superb again, this man cannot do any wrong. I love how he plays Bruce Wayne as this rich yuppie, so reminds me of American Psycho. Anyhow, the action was also great, easier to follow than the last movie. WOW WOW WOW, going for my second viewing tomorrow. EVERYONE SHOULD SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!

  21. james says – reply to this

im surprised perez, you're the only person that hasnt liked this movie.
all the characters had growth, except for the joker who's just supposed to be plain and psychotic, so i dont see what you're saying.
the action sequences were amazing, yes there was a lot of story but that was a good thing as it was all well done. bruce/batmans character grows tremendously.
and whats wrong with maggie gyllenhall? shes a good actress and played her part very well in this film, far from "pus coming out of ass" (grow up P)
this movie is amazing, its breaking records world wide, everyone should go see it. the best film in a decade! instanst classic

  22. Jaime says – reply to this

I really liked the movie. The best part about it was that Michael Jackson was sitting in the seats in front of me with his kids. At the midnight release at the Palms in iMax last night! Woohoo!

  23. Adam says – reply to this

you obviously don;t know the comic if you think that the characters are supposed to grow and have inner turmoil. The Joker is supposed to be one-dimensional and just pure evil. So yeah, umm…you're wrong.

Loved it! Academy award for Heath Ledger!

  32. Sioby says – reply to this

I whole heartedly disagree with this review. I believe this movie was definitely the Joker's film. The Harvey Dent/Two Face tangent was incredibly short compared to the longevity of the Joker's story line, Heath Ledger and the Joker made the entire film. And I find the maturity of the new Batman films refreshing compared to the adolescent and expected film adaptations that were created prior to Christopher Nolan's versions.

  33. Layla says – reply to this

Perez, totally agree with your review.
It didn't live up to the hype, at least to me it didn't.
You should review a new movie coming out wednesday called Boy A, it looks amazing.

  45. HAG says – reply to this

    Hey Perezsita,
I agree with most of your comments. I loved the movie in IMAX too…up until the seemingly Deus Ex Machina (or "contrived") ending. Yeah, yeah, there's gonna be a Batman 3, but come on…"Batman Begins" left me wanting SO much more.

About Heath…director Christopher Nolan purposefully left out Joker's backstory so that the character could be more "absolute." Heath played the Joker with SUCH terrifying results. What a creep, the character was. But so awesome. Amazing. It's so sad that whoever the next Joker will be is not going to be him. RIP!

  46. HAG says – reply to this

    I'm such a fag

  47. 47

Re: leoRe: leo – Agree completely Leo. I really enjoyed reading this site until it became about placating his massive ego, e.g. inferiority complex. He sees himself as a celebrity now, and you know what they say about celebrities…"If you aren't talking about them, then they aren't listening."

  52. PEREZ says – reply to this

I disagree with a lot of Perez's input but I MUST AGREE with him on this one. He's being honest and we have that right and for me, it wasn't EPIC. It just wasn't. The actors were great but it just didn't "Wow" me, like I expected it to!

  53. john says – reply to this

why do u say "we" just saw the dark knight?!?…..

  54. balls says – reply to this

    GREAT movie, HORRIBLE review.

THE DARK KNIGHT was an epic BEAST of a movie.

i bet you'd prefer Transformers or Good Luck Chuck over this movie because they required less BRAINS to comprehend. THE DARK KNIGHT touched on ethical dilemmas and featured MORE plot twists and unpredictability than any movie to come out in years.

not only is LEDGER unbelievable, this movie is the first 3 hour flick that didn't keep me looking at my watch. the whole time i just kept hoping the movie would NEVER end. and even the ending was phenomenal!

i totally agree. it was sooooo lacking that special umph..
    and maggie as rachel…omg
i was so glad they killed her off.
i swear i couldve done better.
and it was for sure too long.

it was an overall ok decent movie.
    a little tooo much hype..
    but its worth waching.

  57. 57

I saw the movie and loved it. However, saying that, I have to agree with you on certain points, Perez. The movie definitely was too long - and I thought there were enough action sequences, it's just that most of them were in the second half of the movie. I thought Ledger was good, very good but he didn't quite convince me with the look in his eyes. And - it is a story based on a comic book series, so I don't know how three dimensional characters can get…lol you look great by the way!

  58. Milla says – reply to this

dude, you're nuts saying the movie wasn't great..it was friggin awesome..you should've seen mama mia since you like all that girly shit. Heath's acting was surreal…Christian Bale did really well too but I noticed there was just so much dialog from Ledger, which was fine because it was FUN to watch him act so evil and dark and psycho..about the movie being based about a superhero and being too dark, well..that's what i liked about it..it wasn't your little spiderman friendly neighborhood dude..or you're little fantastic 4 guy that friggin stretches. There were many twists to the movie, it had amazing action..I almost thought i was watching a terrorist movie..I had to remind myself this was a BATMAN movie. I almost left in diarrhea of how intense the movie was. I loved the whole darkness instilled into this movie..A+!

  59. you h says – reply to this

Wow, pleasantly surprised as I actually agree with you; well done Perez.
The hype for this film was positively excruciating IMO, all these moronic fans giving it 10s on IMDB before it was even released to the public. There should be proof of purchase or something because it doesn't deserve the 9.7 it's sporting at the moment. My biggest gripe with the film was the Joker and Heath Ledger's performance. He was 'good' but he was hardly Oscar-worthy and to his credit I don't think that was his fault at all; as you stated I think it was mainly to do with the script. I think BB lacked that 'wow' factor too, Chris Nolan's a solid director but it's like his sense of wonder/fun has been completely labotimized. I've seen his entire filmography and absolutely NONE of his films are fun man, none of them, he plays everything with a straight-face. He didn't even really start stylizing his films until he started his work on BB, I guess I'd imagine him as incredibly intelligent but hardly interesting.

Perez you are nuts. I think you need to see it again and re-evaluate. I agree Maggie blew chunks. Heath was AMAZING almost scary/creepy. I think the beauty of the movie was that it didn’t need to be R rated. I think it would have failed if it had been. I thought that the action scenes were in fact action packed! Hello, what about the whole chase scene when we found out that Gordon was alive?!?!?! Need I mention the scene in China? Please see it again. I LOVE LOVE LOVED it

  66. Luvit says – reply to this

You're a Z-list celebrity blogger Perez, not a film critic… so lets just remind ourselves that you don't actually know anything about character development and the overall synopsis.

Everyone knows if you lay on your back your face instantly loses about 20 pounds… although yours could still do with losing another 40.

Your voice bores me… and the fact that you didn't really like the film makes me want to see it even more.

Keep talking shit Perez, it's about all you're good at!!!

  69. me says – reply to this

i forgot to add onto one of my posts… perez… this man has basically had his life taken mostly becas=use of this movie and it shows clearly why. i dont understand how you see no "wow" or whatever in the actors. obviously you fucking need to go back and watch it because that review was NOT honest what-so-ever. Film work? excelent. Acting? was to the point where it was so unreal that it was actually real.. if you follow me? Directing? superb. everything else. the movie all together kicks so much ass. seriously, never through out ANY movie did i have my hand over my mouth for the whole god damn thing except this one. i don't know why people listen to you or look up to you perez? shittiest review. i'm not surprised it's form you. go learn something about film and acting, ya damn twat. you obviously couldnt even pay attention to the acting or anything because you were probobly thinking about how to trash talk it during the movie. i could not see Ledger at ALL.. maybe 2 scenes or seconds? but Heath IS The Joker.

  70. greta says – reply to this

This is a bit weird because I haven't seen the film, but i am curious about the nature of critique.
So perez, my two main questions are:
A- What do we expect in terms of storytelling as a culture. Do we want to be uplifted, transported or shown a versimilitude of the truth?
and B- Again, I haven't seen the film, but what kind of roles are being offered to women, and with what kind of interest do we follow their storyline when it is a 'dick-flick'.
Genuine questions, I'm not stewing at home with the answers here.
Just a question of storytelling which you seem to have gravitated to. (insert smiley-wink face).

  71. Laura says – reply to this

The Gyllenhall chick bugged me too. I think her acting sucks and she's only in film thanks to her father. I like her brother Jake a lot more. His acting is much more believable.

  72. jilli says – reply to this

although many people are making a big deal about this film because it was heath's last, it would have been rated good even if it was his first. you seem really quick to judge how horrible the acting and lack of depth there was before it seems you really know anything about what you think youre talking about. if you read the comic, like people have stated before me, you would see heath did an extraordinary job at capturing the jokers part by NOT giving him a lot of depth. please, realize what youre talking about before you talk shit on the dead/living just because you think youre a celebrity.

  73. 73

My only complaint is that it had so many climaxes, it seemed like it was never going to end. Aside from that it was very impressive.

  74. 74

I'm going to see it next weekend :)

  75. Maggi says – reply to this

I agree with you, Perez (except for the part about Maggie Gyllenhaal!). It was a fine movie. I'm glad I saw it. There was nothing amazing about it. Not nearly enough character development for how talky it was.

I agree that a dark, gritty Batman movie should be R rated too.

  76. 76

If u caught Dark Knight to see Heath Ledger u'll be disappointed, there's not a trace of the actor, he IS THE JOKER. What a fuking LEGACY. He STOLE EVERY SINGL SCENE he was in… & u MISSED HIM in the scenes he was absent. u wanted development? Dont u see? The Joker is one of THE most COMPLEX villians EVER, BECAUSE he just IS nuts! Youre conditioned to think money drives crooks, or some fucked up childhood..the Joker seems to do it for th simple JOY of it…maybe just maybe a really low expectation of the human race. that's why he kept "testing" people…to show we all have the potential to be crazy when we're being selfish. I dont know if u're a fan of the graphic novels/comic books, But Chritopher Nolan is WAY respectful of these charaters..I went with a group of 6, some hardcore fans of the comics, some not at all. We were ALL totally BlOWN AWAY. Comic books take themselves VERY seriously, the stories are often way darker than the Saturday mornig cartoons that attempt to portray them…there IS huge character development and GROWTH…for Batman, for Gordon, for Twoface…on that note, the interacting of all the key characters is FANTASTIC-totally natural. I think this film surpased all the hype.

  77. 77

As for Heath, if gets that Oscar nod it'll be for no other reason than because his performance is truly worthy of the honor. I think Utook yourself TOO serious as a reviewer…ironically. so disappointed with your review but u're in the minority…

  80. shenu says – reply to this

So I went into the movie without the hype of Heath Ledger's death overshadowing it…and I was blown away at how he transformed into the Psychotic, schizophrenic Joker. He made you believe that his character was Insanely SANE! All the characters were strong (although I thought 2-face could have been a bit more) but Batman and the Joker stole the show. Heath was a perfectionist, and I believe anyone who knows what a method actor is, will agree that he accomplished this when making this film. STANDING OVATION….I would have sat through a second viewing right then and there if I could…

  81. Maria says – reply to this

Perez…I get where your coming from, I wish Katie Holmes had still played Rachel Dawes but I think your opinion on Heath's performance is whack. He is this movie…Bale is good but his batman voice annoyed the shit out of me by the end…the lisp! I have been a fan of Heath's from day one and as an aussie he has been on our screens for over 10 years. I'm not usually a fan of these types of movies and I admit the interest for me was greater because of Heath but I really was blown away hey, I did have my hand over my mouth during the joker scenes.

Heath absolutely deserves the Oscar for his performance.

You obviously did go into this movie expecting greatness, cos now your bitching that you didnt get it.

  82. Jen c says – reply to this

Listen you big headed potato, you have no good taste in movies, what's so ever. I'm sorry this wasn't a musical, but this is by far the best batman movie, heath ledgers performance was spectacular, and obviously you have never read a comic book because you have no idea what you're talking about.

Ps,I think all yourfat is going to your head, your head loooks way fuckin big.potato head.

  83. fiona says – reply to this

  84. medgr says – reply to this

I completely disagree Perez. That movie was AMAAAAZING. Heath Ledger definitely deserved all of the oscar buzz. And in terms of character developement if you don't know the history Batman characters after like 8 movies and a million comic books the you seriously have a problem. The ONLY thing that might have made it better was a major fight sequence but I think it might have taken away from the point of the movie. This movie gave something that no other super hero movie has given in a very long time and that's a true plot. So sorry if you weren't blown away but me and the other billion people that saw it yesterday were.

  85. iknow says – reply to this

i love you but your an idiot. i hate comicbook/superhero movies but i must admit the "wow factor" played throughout the whole film. the plot and actors were great, however i wouldnt give all the credit to Ledger, he did do a great job.

  86. greta says – reply to this

Often in Russia years ago, the endings of movies were quite different than what was seen on the Western screen. They demanded a tragic and bitter ending without resolution with the 'everything is going to be alright' finale. Art to them wasn't about utopic potential but truth and bitter sadness. We seem to feel that it is our right to free ourselves from tragedy and depression. Perhaps the Russians were a bit extreme in a kind of dark worldview, but it seems that our obsession with happiness is not the answer to uneasiness. Our sadness is legitimate and part of healthy feeling in the world but it need not cripple us.

  87. alexi says – reply to this

    Hey Perez,

I totally agree with you. However, I did think that they had some awesome mo fuckn quotes in the movies. Yes, they did go for gritty and dark but you gotta understand where they were coming from. Overall, the moral of the movie was awe mo fuckn SOME. Yes, Hardy Dent was the fuckn role of the fuckn night. noooo, nicole kidman woulda sucked some hard fuckn balls. i loved megghan. yes it was long. it did have a good moral. I LOVE YOU MO FUCKKN perez. you speak my mind. please do not stop……………….

  88. greta says – reply to this

I think we don't know how to view dark art with intelligence anymore because we've been brainwashed into happiness as the be-all end-all. It would be kind of amazing if we gave each other permission to be sad, without thinking of it as a condition that needs to be treated, and instead as a natural cycle and an important discomfort and legitimate feeling. I'm not arguing for a depressed world here, I think there's actually a lot of power in discomfort when it's removed from an idea of 'social problem'. Kay I'm rambling a bit now, and for the two people who are actually going to read this I'll go on. I'm glad I feel uncomfortable because ultimately I'm not at ease with the way things happen and I feel propelled to challenge the "way" and is this not what has always been in our strange grasping for humanity. Ok that was a bit over the top. And cliche. I'll do better next time. My genius comes in spurts. What this has to do with Batman is ummm about superpower, yeah, SUPERPOWER!

  89. Kiwi says – reply to this

Just curious, have you ever read the actual original comic books? They're all VERY dark, so this actually sticks to the soul of batman WAY better than anything prior to this brand of Batman movies.

  90. natal says – reply to this

i absolutly loved it. Heath was incredible (no suprise) but oh my god its was just unbelievable to see him in his prime.

  91. nik says – reply to this

Despite the fact that the movie was called "The Dark Knight" it seemed as if it was more based around the Joker. Which in all reality, is fine. The Joker's character doesn't have any inner turmoil. If you actually paid attention to the movie you should recall a part where it is said that he pretty much just wants to see the world burn. He doesn't do it for the money, just for the anarchy it will cause. For that, you can't really imagine a background for that character as he is just a one- dimensional character. I think Heath's performance as the Joker was unparallel. He was amazing. Christian Bale as Batman, as I think, was great as well. This movie was intended to be a "dark" film. It was meant to have more story behind it than let's say, SpiderMan - whereas it was pretty much a love story mixed with some action and fantasy. I didn't have a problem with Maggie's performance whatsoever. I thought she did very well. As well as Aaron Eckhart. I was literally on the edge of my seat, wondering what the Joker would come up with next. I think maybe you should read the graphic novels and then see the movie again. Maybe pay a little more attention to it. I'm disagreeing with what you said, it is just your opinion. And I am solely giving you mine.

  92. Adam says – reply to this

Well. You're kind of an idiot, aren't you?

It really sounded like you were making that up as you went along. "It didn't have that wow factor. It lacked magic. It was too dark. They should make it MORE dark and gritty. Make it the R-rated Batman."

What the hell was that? That's not a review. It was just another chance for you to to get your face in front of everyone.

Never in a million years will you deserve to deliver a critique of Heath Ledger's performance. He had talent.

I thought the Dark Night was great. It definitely lived up to the hype. As for you saying that they had no growth, keep in mind that this movie is a franchise and they want to milk this cow as long as they can. Slow "growth" of characters is kind of expected to me. I thought Heath Ledger was fantastic in this movie. As for your comment about it being a bit too dark? I have to disagree. I thought it worked well. For a while, the Batman movies were getting a bit cheesy and focused too much on the comical aspect (aka with Val Kilmer as Batman). They're bringing it back to how it should be. This shouldn't be about slapstick comedy and cheesy catch phrases. This darker interpretation of Batman is grown up, more sophisticated.

All in all, it was an awesome movie.
    The pencil trick was sweet.

Heath Ledger not being amazing or no character development?!?!? PIGREZ hes not supposed to have any, he is psychotic and evil!! HE IS AMAZING, it wouldnt be as good without him. And I'm sorry the movie wasn't as "fun" as you wished. Fun to you would be batman jumping around wearing a pink glittery cape and heels. this was an excellent movie and your opinion really really sucks. if you can, please restrain yourself from critiquing any future movies because you fail big time. and you said maggie had pus comming from her ass?? i'm pretty sure thats your fat ass buddy. im sure she knows how to clean hers. i've seen you in person and boy you honestly look like some weird fat rainbow homeless looking bastard. grow some balls and tell maggie that to her face, i bet you couldn't do it.

  100. 100

New York Times movie reviewer said it best..The Joker "isn’t fighting for anything or anyone. He isn’t a terrorist, just terrifying".
