I think you were way off base! I thought Heath ledger MADE this film and was brilliant. His character wasn't supposed to have growth…he was just supposed to be ruthless and psychotic. I don't know what movie you were watching but I thought it was wonderful and I think that Heath Ledger was amazing. The whole point of these new batman movies is to make them darker and not so much like the borrowing cartoon-like versions. I thought it brought reality to the comic and made it much more enjoyable. It's my opinion and I find it sad that you didn't appreciate Heath Ledger's amazing and unforgettable performance.

yeah i def. agree with some stuff u said, however, ledgers performance was unparalleled. it was very good and for sure the most intricate super hero movie. maybe too long and not enough christian bale. maggie was okay, dent good, bale very good, ledger stupendeous!
The movie was Fabo! Much more like the comics, dark.
The movie was amazing, had me on the edge of my seat for the whole 2.5 hours or so. Every actor brought something great to the screen. Heath Ledger blew my mind with his performance and definately would not have been the same without him in this flick. Christian Bale, well what can i say, he was superb again, this man cannot do any wrong. I love how he plays Bruce Wayne as this rich yuppie, so reminds me of American Psycho. Anyhow, the action was also great, easier to follow than the last movie. WOW WOW WOW, going for my second viewing tomorrow. EVERYONE SHOULD SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!

all the characters had growth, except for the joker who's just supposed to be plain and psychotic, so i dont see what you're saying.
the action sequences were amazing, yes there was a lot of story but that was a good thing as it was all well done. bruce/batmans character grows tremendously.
and whats wrong with maggie gyllenhall? shes a good actress and played her part very well in this film, far from "pus coming out of ass" (grow up P)

I whole heartedly disagree with this review. I believe this movie was definitely the Joker's film. The Harvey Dent/Two Face tangent was incredibly short compared to the longevity of the Joker's story line, Heath Ledger and the Joker made the entire film. And I find the maturity of the new Batman films refreshing compared to the adolescent and expected film adaptations that were created prior to Christopher Nolan's versions.

I agree with most of your comments. I loved the movie in IMAX too…up until the seemingly Deus Ex Machina (or "contrived") ending. Yeah, yeah, there's gonna be a Batman 3, but come on…"Batman Begins" left me wanting SO much more.
About Heath…director Christopher Nolan purposefully left out Joker's backstory so that the character could be more "absolute." Heath played the Joker with SUCH terrifying results. What a creep, the character was. But so awesome. Amazing. It's so sad that whoever the next Joker will be is not going to be him. RIP!

I disagree with a lot of Perez's input but I MUST AGREE with him on this one. He's being honest and we have that right and for me, it wasn't EPIC. It just wasn't. The actors were great but it just didn't "Wow" me, like I expected it to!

THE DARK KNIGHT was an epic BEAST of a movie.
i bet you'd prefer Transformers or Good Luck Chuck over this movie because they required less BRAINS to comprehend. THE DARK KNIGHT touched on ethical dilemmas and featured MORE plot twists and unpredictability than any movie to come out in years.
not only is LEDGER unbelievable, this movie is the first 3 hour flick that didn't keep me looking at my watch. the whole time i just kept hoping the movie would NEVER end. and even the ending was phenomenal!

I saw the movie and loved it. However, saying that, I have to agree with you on certain points, Perez. The movie definitely was too long - and I thought there were enough action sequences, it's just that most of them were in the second half of the movie. I thought Ledger was good, very good but he didn't quite convince me with the look in his eyes. And - it is a story based on a comic book series, so I don't know how three dimensional characters can get…lol you look great by the way!

Heath's acting was surreal…Christian Bale did really well too but I noticed there was just so much dialog from Ledger, which was fine because it was FUN to watch him act so evil and dark and psycho..about the movie being based about a superhero and being too dark, well..that's what i liked about it..it wasn't your little spiderman friendly neighborhood dude..or you're little fantastic 4 guy that friggin stretches. There were many twists to the movie, it had amazing action..I almost thought i was watching a terrorist movie..I had to remind myself this was a BATMAN movie. I almost left in diarrhea of how intense the movie was. I loved the whole darkness instilled into this movie..A+!

Wow, pleasantly surprised as I actually agree with you; well done Perez.
The hype for this film was positively excruciating IMO, all these moronic fans giving it 10s on IMDB before it was even released to the public. There should be proof of purchase or something because it doesn't deserve the 9.7 it's sporting at the moment. My biggest gripe with the film was the Joker and Heath Ledger's performance. He was 'good' but he was hardly Oscar-worthy and to his credit I don't think that was his fault at all; as you stated I think it was mainly to do with the script. I think BB lacked that 'wow' factor too, Chris Nolan's a solid director but it's like his sense of wonder/fun has been completely labotimized. I've seen his entire filmography and absolutely NONE of his films are fun man, none of them, he plays everything with a straight-face. He didn't even really start stylizing his films until he started his work on BB, I guess I'd imagine him as incredibly intelligent but hardly interesting.

I think the beauty of the movie was that it didn’t need to be R rated. I think it would have failed if it had been. I thought that the action scenes were in fact action packed! Hello, what about the whole chase scene when we found out that Gordon was alive?!?!?! Need I mention the scene in China? Please see it again. I LOVE LOVE LOVED it

This is a bit weird because I haven't seen the film, but i am curious about the nature of critique.
So perez, my two main questions are:
A- What do we expect in terms of storytelling as a culture. Do we want to be uplifted, transported or shown a versimilitude of the truth?
and B- Again, I haven't seen the film, but what kind of roles are being offered to women, and with what kind of interest do we follow their storyline when it is a 'dick-flick'.
Genuine questions, I'm not stewing at home with the answers here.
Just a question of storytelling which you seem to have gravitated to. (insert smiley-wink face).
