Jay To NBC: "Eff You!"

Any possible hope NBC had of retaining Jay Leno at their network has now completely vanished.
In an unusual move, the talk show titan has finally proclaimed publicly that he is done with the peacock network next year, when they are forcing him to leave The Tonight Show for Conan O'Brien.
In a new interview, Leno says:
"I am definitely done next year — with NBC. I'm not a beach guy, and the last time I was in my pool was to fix a light. Don't worry, I'll find a job somewhere."
Getting fired from NBC was probably the best move for Leno and television.
He'll make mad money on ABC (or Fox) and now TV will have a third show at 11:35 P.M.

Jay set the retirement date himself, as it approached he had second thoughts but the wheels were already in motion. NBC doesn't want to alienate Conan by putting him off. This is similar to the Brett Favre situation in Green Bay.
didn't Leno say he was retiring and NBC went to get a replacement and signed Conan- then Leno decided he wasn't rich enough, so he decided to stay? Oh please. Leno is funny, but he shouldn't have announced his retirement. He can get a tv show with Bret Favre.

Jay Leno wasn't fired. This is nearing the end of his huge contract. Perhaps that didn't "re-sign" him, but that's different. And, it doesn't seem like Jay Leno is shedding any tears about it either. I think he's ready to do other things with his life.

I don't blame him, NBC sucks big time. NBC is always last in the ratings in every category. Even all their cable network ratings are low. NBC is in a lose, lose situation. Conan O'Brien's on NBC already so his audience will just sift. But they will lose Jay Leno's audience. Another network will pick him up in a flash and that's where his and NBCs audience will go there. Maybe even fire that dreadful David Letterman whose ratings are in the toilet anyways.

This is without a doubt the worst move that good old stupid NBC has ever made……….Who in there right mind,other than some NY local college students can tolerate for five minutes that creep CONAN O'BRIEN???????? Of all people why him???? Jay Leno's show is great, love that Ross guy too. David Letterman creeps me out [yeh,i once lived in his CT. area and would run into him here & there as would any local] So with Jay gone NBC's ratings will dip even lower. Letting him go is a big error. I really never thought they'd go through with it. Oh well, back to movies on cable or re runs of the wonderful 'Jon & Kate plus 8', without a doubt one of the most entertaining shows of all times.

The Tonight Show does not come on in all timezones at 11:35, it is broadcast at 10:35 pm in most midwest markets. If would be nice if the midwest were ever to receive any sort of positive recognition in the media. Although, I suppose, ignorance of mountain and Hawaiian zones is just as bad.

I was under the impression that Leno chose not to continue his contract about 2 years ago, at which point NBC announced that Conan would get his spot. If Leno wanted to continue at the Peacock, he would have continued at the Peacock. Maybe you know something that invalidates this perception. If so, you should share it.

I guess he is starting to realize the end is near. I can't believe that they did not give him another chance before announcing conan was taking over. Especially since he was winning the time slot and nbc has sooo few hit shows. and what it seems like in the interview meant that he was willing to think about other tv things. Something was up with nbc-but they might have said to him, if you don't stay, don't expect to do anything else on the network. which you could see one of the stupid suits telling him this.

I remember NBC and Jay actually actively discouraged celebs and barred their own stars from going on Kimmel. But he improvised and made the show great.

I don't like Conan O'Brian's current show so don't plan to watch him when he replaces Jay Leno. However I do plan to watch Jay Leno whatever network he is on.

For all you morons who keep saying Jay didn't get fired, JAY DID GET FIRED. No one gives up The Tonight Show after only 17 years in their mid-50's. Of course they are dumping him at the end of a contract; legally, they couldn't dump him sooner. Contracts are routinely renegotiated every x number of years, and Jay would have renewed his contract in a heartbeat. But NBC isn't renewing; they are dumping him. Why? I don't know. But Johnny Carson was there for 30 years and left when he wanted to leave. Jay was dumped/fired. There was never any question about that. So stop saying he wasn't fired. He was. Now he doesn't want to stay, not after being fired; but, originally, he was fired/not renewed/dumped. Call it whatever you want it still means FIRED.

Conan was going to leave for greener pastures and NBC made the choice to force out Leno. Letterman sat behind Johnny Carson for years and had the the tonight show swiped away from him by Leno. Leno should NOT be surprised by the lack of loyalty. This is how hollywood works!

I'll make a prediction. I predict that Jay Leno will substitute for Larry King off and on for about a year and then permanently replace King…who is almost totally senile. Leno will have to fight several people for the Larry King gig, but he will win out. I could not believe this, but Larry King is the highest rated ahow on TV, and CNN is going to have big problems replacing him unless they find someone who has a following. That would be Jay leno. He will be largely entertainment centered, and other people will do the hard news interviews. So, like, you won't have leno interviewing President Obama. Plus Leno is a religious nut who is good friends with Mel Gibson, Leno is homophobic, and…did I say he is a staunch Republican.
I've seen Jay's standup twice back in the 80's. Leno used to have balls before he sold out. Hopefully he can regain them although I really doubt it.
And what happens to Nightline? We already have three shows to chose from…if you want another bad/old/tired late night comedy show then keep making posts like that. Leno is no Johnny Carson. Late night will go on just fine without him.
