Though he hasn't appeared on air in quite some time, Roger Ebert has remained very active behind the scenes of his show, Ebert & Roper: At the Movies.
Well, now, the legendary film critic has announced that he is also leaving the show.
In a statement, Roger says:
"After 33 years on the air, 23 of them with Disney, the studio has decided to take the program named "Siskel & Ebert" and then "Ebert & Roeper" in a new direction. I will no longer be associated with it.
The show was a wonderful experience. It was a great loss to me when surgery in July 2006 made it impossible for me to appear on the air any longer. Although I remained active behind the scenes, I feel that Richard Roeper and several co-hosts, notably Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott, have excelled at carrying on the tradition Gene Siskel and I began in 1975 with "Sneak Previews" on PBS.
Gene and I felt the formula was simplicity itself: Two film critics, sitting across the aisle from each other in a movie balcony, debating the new films of the week. We developed an entirely new concept for TV. Few shows have been on the air so long and remained so popular. We made television history, and established the trademarked catch-phrase "Two thumbs up."The trademark still belongs to me and Marlene Iglitzen, Gene's widow, and the thumbs will return. We are discussing possibilities, and plan to continue the show's tradition."

Re: fLBea – Ebert has thyroid cancer which spread into his jaw. Several surgeries on salivary glands, tongue and jaw. Very sad that Disney would kick him when he's down, but that's what they do at the "happiest place on Earth.
The f***ed Peggy Lee when she was in her 80's, in poor health and needed money. She was trying to collect royalties on DVD release of "Lady & the Tramp", since she signed contracts before DVD and internet existed. Michael Eisner made $535 million in one day that same year, but they fought the company made Peggy rack up huge legal fees to fight over a measly 5 million bucks or so.

It's no outrage. Ebert owns all the trademarks, refused to let the show use them after he was incapacitated, and so why keep his ass in business? if I ran disney, I'd dump him, too. Roeper couldn't use the two thumbs, and what the hell does ebert have to do with the show anymore anyway? Movie reviews are a dime a dozen- and ebert was biased and arrogant.

Watching this since I was a kid, fuck Disney.
Shows don't last forever, perez. And with Siskel gone and Ebert incapacitated, what is the purpose? It was a good run…he had a long gig, many years of employment–now its time to let it all go. He will still have all the trademarks and such, so no big deal. His show lasted longer than a lot of them. So, quit dissin' on Disney, they do what most studios do and MOVE on. I think you need to do the same, quit bitchin' about it.

i saw this coming a mile away. ebert hasn't been on the show for years and he's all effed up with several cancers. siskel had cancer too, i think it was in the brain and that's not a good one to have. before the web, siskel and ebert was the top place to get quality movie reviews. i can't thank them enough for telling me and my family which movies to see and avoid when i was a kid. good luck, roger!

Yeah, milk some money from that Cyrus idiot while you can, Disney, but stop wrecking things people have supported for years. I loved At the Movies, and I have watched it for so long, I don't remember not watching it. I also bought products advertised there and listened to the reviews. Roger Ebert is the ONLY film critic I have ever respected and whose advice I followed and my friends are the same. I will much rather follow Roger and Richard not whatever Disney does with a movie show. Good Luck Roger and Richard.
