On The N Word
As you recall from last week, Elizabitch Hasselbeck got very emotional during a debate with Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepard over the use of the controversial N word on The View.
Hasselbeck insisted that the word should not be used to describe anyone or be used by anyone. Whoopi took the position of many stating that only members of the black community are entitled to use the word.
Now steps in actor Taye Diggs, who has his own opinion about the situation and about Hasselbeck.
Diggs says Hasselbeck "doesn’t understand, and, no offense — I don’t think any white person has the right to tell a black person or to even weigh in on subject matter such as that. They don’t know what it’s like to be called that word; they don’t know what it’s like to be black.”
Diggs continued, “They can have an opinion, but… don’t take a word that you created and called me for many, many years, and then me being in my position, have the strength to change what it means in my own culture. Don’t try to take it back now. Now it’s ours. Leave it alone.”

I am white, my duaghter (adopted from Ethiopia) is black. She shouldn't have to be called that word by anyone, regardless of how it is used, positively or negatively. To stubbornly cling to this word as a right (whether you are white or black) is to ignore all the possible contexts in which is an be used or how painful it might be to someone outside your immediate circle. I have yet to hear someone clearly explain a legitimate reason for not giving it up altogether (the fact that it is your right and you have appropriated it is not a good enough reason, in my opinion).
I like how he says "called me for many, many years" as if he were an actual slave. That's my biggest problem with the n-word and with the whole race issue. The majority of black people alive today were NOT slaves.

This issue will never end its forever! Black America has their own unique culture and this word both past and present is intergrated in the community. The Blacks have the right to use the N word in songs, writings and other forms of communication and expression! It all comes down to self respect and respect of others! Knowledge and education=POWER! Whether it's the "n" word or "b**ch," used by guys or girls, offensive words should not be used against friends or people in general.

It is a word of exclusion. When it was used by whites, referring to blacks, it was used to exclude, or preclude them. Now, when it is used by blacks, among blacks, it is used to exclude others. At some point, it needs to be recognized for what it is and then to move on from it. When that will happen is anybody's guess. I imagine that alot of wounds need to be healed first.

I am a white guy from Atlanta. I know many black/african american people. I am not racist but i will say if a black person can say it, then so the hell can I and I have. But I do agree that no race at all should use the N word nor any other racial derogatory word. Using language like that shows how ignorant all races are.

The N word affects only black people and it has for years. It was used to humiliate and diminsh the spirit of African Americans. I think its great that we, as a nation are finally talking about the N-word and racial divides. It is not fair for any community black, white or whatever color you are, to use words that encourage hate. IT'S SO VERY 1960's to stay in the past and not move forward. No one in any generation of my family has ever been handed anything..they have all worked their asses off to get where they are today. Who created the word? I didn't create the word. I wasn't alive when the word was created and I was always taught that it was one of the worst words in the english language. Why is it ok for a black person to refer to a white person as Cracker and Honkey, but white people can't say anything back. The word 'n', a form of 'negroid' should be made redundant. This word is derogatory, and puts white people as superior 'race' over black people. We now know that the concept of race is superficial, so why the hell would we still be using terms such as 'caucasian' and 'negroid' in this day and age?

The issue with using a word like this, that a minority group uses to describe themselves within a group is that not everyone in that group likes the word. I work hard for what I have and what I want to become. This is a word, that was supposedly 'buried' by the black community, but to the African-American community it can be used when convenient. Take Jesse Jackson for example, he used the derrogatory word when discussing Obama. Also, there have been two senators that are now stating, the use of the word "black hole" is racist. The trouble is, if you are white and you have not seen black people suffer discrimination in this day and age, and you have not seen that discrimination first hand, so you think it does not exist. No one is still blaming white people who are alive now for slavery. But people can, and should, get mad at white people who are still racist now. Talk to a black person who has been turned away from renting an apartment because of race. Try to get a table at a restaurant with a large group of black people, and watch the restaurant employees take forever to serve you, or bring your bill before they bring the food (Dennys). Try driving somewhere with all black people in the car, and see how often the police pull up alongside you, and sometimes pull you over for "driving while black/brown". I am white, and I have had each of these things happen to me when I have been with all black people. People who were minding their own business, just out to enjoy the evening, whatever. I know black people who could not buy a house in certain neighborhoods without receiving threats. Even from the year 2000 on, this stuff is still happening. If you think it isn't, you aren't paying attention or you just don't care. This post is to address the raving idiots who say racism is over, not to argue about the use of the n-word.

I don't believe in labeling any words "bad" because its all about the context in which it is used. No words should be banned and anybody can say any word they want. Anybody heard of Freedom of Speech? This guy was never a slave and he doesn't know what it's like to be white. He just wants a reason to hate. I wish the black people of this country would remember how slavery started in this country, um, their own people sold them to us first. So yes, the whites were bad for doing the buying and abuse of some of them, but damn, their own people started the selling. People like him promote hate and discrimination. They keep it alive. Ignore him.
When black people use it amongst themselves, it teaches black kids to hate whites. It forces black kids to focus on the sadness of the past instead of being hopeful about their life. It quashes the natural happiness of children.
I am white. I do not use the n-word, and I find it highly offensive when others use it. I respect the position of the black community on this issue, but it just seems to me that any word that is derogatory and/or offensive should not be used by anyone ever.
