Filed under: Exclusives! > Fashion Smashion > Media Minute > Anna Wintour

wintour.jpg

Vogue's revenues are falling downwards, but its main rival,Elle magazine, is whistling a different tune!

Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that Elle is about to have its biggest September issue ever.

At 420 pages, they're up 6.6% from last year.

It's the BIGGEST issue they've had, ad page wise.

Plus, their August issue is the fourth month in a row that they BEAT Vogue in ad pages.

Why is Elle kicking Vogue's ass in advertising sales?

What say you, fashionistas?

Anna Wintour's gonna have some explaining to do!

As a young ladywho works in fashion, I have to say I find myself picking up Elle over Vogue. Vogue is pretentious and stuffy and don't have relationship articles. Saying that, Vogue will always be the end all and say all in Fashion, so they or Anna will not be going anywhere anytime soon. The Devil shall prevail.

Re: … – Anna Wintour is the editor of Vogue, loosely based on Meryl Streeps character on 'Devil Wears Prada' DUH! You shouldnt be commenting on this thread if you dont even know that! She's kind of a bid deal! Personally, I'd rather read Harpers Bazzar, mostly and East Coast (N.Y.) fashion mag. Vogue is not exclusive, everyone and their mom reads it! Blugh!

I hate Vogue, everyone reads it! EVERYONE! It's annoying, even Abercrombie wearing high schoolers who know nothing about fashion. Elle is more fun and relaxed, but for fashion you guys should only read Harpers Bazzar. I dont want to wear what EVERYONE wears because they all saw it in Vogue and all bought it the next day, yuckkkkk!!!!!!

People want magazines they can relate to. Elle does fashion on a real person level. Vogue is out of everyones league. While it is fun to look at the runway shows, people want fashion that they can actually get their hands on.

Re: wtf – Fashion is not just "fashion". It the clothes you and I wear that make up society. The actions you impose in public reflect the clothes you wear, then the mannerisms you make are directly associated with the clothes on your body. If you are clean cut and conservative you are less likely to be hassled by a cop than if you are young and black and your hat's real low. It happens. Fashion matters because of that. People stereotype the "fashion" you choose and that is how "fashion" affects everyone, non-Vogue readers and Vogue readers alike.

I read an article about Joe Zee who work over at Elle. While Conde Nast, who publishes Vogue, has a queue of towncars, sleek office interiors, and throws money at every thing that walks through the doors, Elle is more grounded.

Simple offices and editors who take the subway. In my opinion, the Elle crew love fashion just as much as Voguettes, but they know it's all just clothes.

    37

After working in publishing for 20+ years, I am not surprised at all that Elle is beating Vogue in ad sales, content and consumer interest. Vogue is severely outdated in all of the above. Anna needs to bring in a new fresh perspective to her publication. I think it still has potential but major changes need to be implemented to keep her advertisers and readership satisfied.

  38. Karen says – reply to this

    That NOSE! :)

  53. Angel says – reply to this

    53

Perez, do you really know anything at all about the publishing industry? I'm going to bet probably not much. Just because they are up 6.6% doesn't mean they are exactly rolling in the dough with this issue. It depends on the rate that the ads were actually sold at. Currently Elle charges $121,950.00 for a full color 1-time ad (via their 2008 rate card). Very seldom do advertisers actually pay rate card. Regular advertisers that have been with the magazine for a long time, usually pay much lower rates that have been grand-fathered in. Regulars will also get a break on price if they advertise outside of their schedule. New advertisers will generally get a break for being a new or 1st time advertiser. So, just because they are up 6.6% in size does not mean they are up that much in revenue. In fact, I highly doubt it. Maybe you should compare ad revenue $$ instead of comparing ad pages. They are not the same. Perhaps your "sources" should give you a crash course in how the magazine publishing industry actually works. Then maybe you could give factual information to your readers. Hope I didn't use too big of words for you to understand.

it probabkly gas to do ith the fact that elle was $3.99 to sub scribe for a whole year trough a website back in November! I pesonally prefer Vanity Fair and Harper's, but would subscribe for anything that is on such a sake- including Allure, Glamour and Marie Claire. I spread the news and all my 10+ coworkers subscribed for that low of a price. I would have subscribed for Vogue too, had they given me such a discount. Oh and the Mary Kate Issue SUCKED!

  55. Ann says – reply to this

    55

I buy Elle instead of Vogue because Elle has realistic fashion views for people who don't have millions of $$$$$$$. Vogue is more of a fantasy type fashion mag.

  56. Whitn says – reply to this

    56

I personally don't buy Vogue anymore because of its lack of diversity. They place the same "type" of boring, older white celebrity on the cover for each issue. The editorials are boring and shot with the same models. They are going to be pissed at Vogue's Italia's sales for the historic all-black issue, but I think diversity should be rewarded. That's not to say Elle is that much better. They also choose the same type of boring cover choices, but I guess those choices are faring better with audiences now because Elle usually picks younger, more relevant choices in pop culture (Rihanna was on a few months ago, as opposed to Gwenyth Paltrow for Vogue).

  57. Megan says – reply to this

    57

Honestly, like her or not, I'm assuming Nina Garcia's presence on Project Runway has helped boost Elle over Vogue. Vogue is the Bible of fashion mags, but to the tweens that watch Project Runway Elle is more digestible. Anna needs to PR once it moves to Lifetime!

Elle RULES!!! Joe Zee RULES!!! I've been following that man's work since his W days and he knows his stuff. He's made Elle cool, young, relevant and fashion forward again. I would read anything he does and what he's doing at Elle is 100 times better than anything at Vogue. Which has gotten even too old even for my mother. Try again ANNA!

    63

Re: cindy – Rasin Face should SO take over Vogue. She knows Hollywood. In leiu of Vogue ad pages being down, I'll post my favorite Rachel Zoe quote. Says Zoe, "Anna Wintour is one of my heroes, but they say that I’m more influential. As great as it is, Vogue won’t change a designer’s business. But if an unknown brand is worn by a certain person in a tabloid, it will be the biggest designer within a week. When I worked with Nicole [Richie], there were things that she wore that designers had to remake for another season because there was such demand.’’

Vogue is for the Rich elite. I stopped buying it when I was old enough to realize that. I used to think it was so neat to read a Vogue when I was a teenager and then as I got older, graduated college, had a job and started buying my own clothes, I realized I couldn't afford the cute $4000 Dolci and Gabanna dress or the $500 Jimmy Choos. Then they have this section of Rich solcialites that I have never heard of or never laid eyes on. It's like, who cares? Elle is made for the rest of us who can't pay a gazillion dollars for some awesome purse that is going to be out of style in six months.

VOGUE is an institution. Just becuase Elle is doing better with their numbers, does not mean it is doing better in the fashion world. Obviously 90 percent of the population cannot and will not ever be part of the industry. Vogue focuses more on society, fashion and major influences. Elle is definitley NEVER going to live up to the royalty of Vogue in the fashion world, it is meant more for entertainment. I will always give my respect to the one magazine that has ALWAYS influenced how we dress in such an artistic and beautiful way without getting too "teenybopper".

    Not that anyone cares but…

I have been subscribing to Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, and W magazines for years now. I have recently decided that I need to cut back on the mags and Vogue is the one I've let go. Reason being that as a 30 year mother of two, I don't feel that Vogue is relatable anymore. There are too many starlets and youngin's on the covers and article that seem more fit for Seventeen magazine. There's my two cents. For what it's worth, Elle is next on my nix list. Vogue is having set backs from manufacturers to advertise in their magazine because their guidelines to correlate with their magazine are stricter.
Americans are tightening on their budget and its speculated that for this upcoming winter things are going to clench a bit more.
This year readers will see discrepancies between both magazines because Vogue will most likely stick to their guns while Elle will be well inviting to affordable manufacturers…as they have been doing.

It's called content-vogue has too little article and too many pictures- while it has always been higher fashion- its becoming too remote in its content for the average readers- and the fashion being less accessible (visually) to the average reader than let's say the fashion in elle or glamour- ends up being not interesting enough of a magazine to buy.

  89. nycfa says – reply to this

Blah, blah, blah… The fashion industry is just stringing along a lot of wannabes. Buy this, look like this, wear this, oh wait, that's out, now buy this… Spend your money on a lot of expensive "stuff" so the designers (who couldn't care less about the minions who buy their "stuff" - they do care that you spend $$$$. They wouldn't want to EVER have to spend more than 2 minutes in your presence) can be fabulous.

  92. betty says – reply to this

    92

The math is simple, Elle is cheap, therfore their print ads are much less expensive than those in found in Vogue. So… with Americas economic failure (yes I am being sarcastic, its not that bad y'all, use some public trans buy store brand milk and shit is the same as always) in order for Vogue to regain their dominance, they must match their competitors ad pricing, or just tough it out… everything is cyclical, remeber that everytime you pay $100 to fill up your SUV's gas tank….

I can understand why - Vogue has been awful lately. The latest issue with Nicole was the only one I've picked up in awhile, where as Elle has been having me pick up their issues more and more lately.

American Vogue has become nothing but pictures, and not always the best ones. Elle knows that its articles have to be engaging and informative, too, where as Vogue seems to be letting itself become… trash.
