American Vogue may be in the shitter, but Italian Vogue is red hot!

Its 'all black' July issue was so popular that they went back and reprinted 10,000 issues for the US market.

The July Italian Vogue featured only black models in its editorial spreads.

Who said people of color don't sell magazines???

The notorious Naomi Campbell was the cover girl.

Photog Stephen Meisel, though, said that there was a "glaring lack" of black models in the advertisements.

Fashion houses Valentino, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Dior featured white models.

Hopefully all magazines will show more diversity in every issue!

Conde Nast attributes that quote otherwise…

"The reprint brought ad pages for issue up 30 percent, but ironically enough, there was a 'glaring lack' of black models in the ads, according to photographer Steven Meisel.

'Advertisers say black models don't sell,' he said."

Just a question…what would the reaction be if Vogue (or any magazine) tried to sell an "all-white" issue? The backlash would be unreal. Is this any less racist? Society is doing a great job ensuring kids will never see all people as being equal…

Hopefully all magazines will hire models based on their qualifications and talent instead of their colour or race. God, it's so frustrating how people like Perez keep babbling about 'diversity'. One could think that quality is the most important factor here.

American Vogue will continue to go down hill. It's JUST ADS and no fashion shoots or layouts like Elle, InStyle, Allure and others. And if someone wants a mag that's really different they'll get W.

the fact of the issues is not that it's a balck issue it's more to promote diersity in fashion unlike the white moelds who are in every show they would use al least 2 black models and 1 asian compared to the rest the use of the issue is to show that other ethnicity can sell mags and point proven in which it did, and to some of the responses of an all white issue that's been done for so long look at the new vogue magazine it has all white women on it and no one's compaling the thing about perez site is he is not a fashion blog so he wouldn't kno anything about the state of minorities on popular fashion mags.

I was just waiting to see how many idiots would say, "what would happen if there was an all-white issue?" Practically EVERY OTHER ISSUE is the all-white issue! That argument is just as stupid as when people criticize BET for being Black Entertainment Television and say black people wouldn't like it if there was a WET. Hello! Every other channel is geared towards white people. Get over it.

  41. 41

an all black issue is literally the opposite of diversity.

    Re: Kionn
Very mature…I'm talking about PROMOTING an all-white issue, as they are doing with the all-black issue. You may feel magazines are all white, and I agree there is a huge ratio, (which I don't agree with), but they are not using 'all white' as a selling point.

  43. AT20 says – reply to this
    43

Can you imagine what would happen if any magazine tried to print an "All-White" issue? It's ridiculous that this is applauded as "diversity", when in actuality it is only fueling the racism that everyone is trying to get rid of. Stop drawing attention to how we're all different (by printing a proclaimed "All-Black" issue) and then perhaps the issue will resolve.

[re=26I33794]Re: Anna[/re] I HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING BUT YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURES. FOR YEARS BLACKS WERE NOT IN ANY MAGAZINES, TV SHOWS, PLAYS, BASKETBALL GAMES RO ANY SPORTING EVENTS. RARELY WERE THERE BLACKS ON SHOWS LIKE SIENFIELD OR FRIENDS, OR VEN WILL AND GRACE. BLACKS WERE NEVER THE NORM.

THEY HAVE CHINA TOWN , LITTLE ITALY ETC. AND NOW BLACK MODELS CANNOT GET ANY WORK. TRUST ME THERE HAVE BEEN PLENTY OF ALL WHITE VOUGUE ISSUES AND FASHION SHOWS. THIS BLACK ISSUE WAS TO HELP THE PROBLEM AND EVEN ENLIGHTEN PEOPLE TO THE ISSUE THAT THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS IN DANGER OF BEING "WHITES ONLY" AGAIN. AND UNLIKE RACIST PEOPLE, THEY ARE NOT KNOCKING OR HUTRING ANOTHER RACE SUCH AS THE KKK OR SKIN HEADS.

  48. Anna says – reply to this
    48

Like I said, I agree the ratio is high, and wrong, I just think by promoting the black/white separation we're making things worse, not better. Kids today probably wouldn't even notice skin colour as we do if it weren't constantly brought to their attention.

Re: NICOL – I FOR GOT TO SAY THAT AS A NON WHITE YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THERE IS A NEGATIVE IMPACT MADE WHEN YOU DONBT SEE PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIEK YOU ON TV AND IN MAGAZINES. THEY HAD TO CREATE EBONY AND ESSENCE MAGAZINE BECAUSE BLACKS WERE NOT IN MAGAZINES. THEY HAD TO CREATE B.E.T. BECAUSE WE DIDNT HAVE MANY TV SHOWS OR CARTOONS. Re: Anna – People often use this reverse discrimination argument but unfortunately it makes no sense because 1) what they argue for already exists (all-white magazines) and 2) more importantly, blacks were never given opportunities before and these advances are momentous - momentous enough to make it 'special' and have an all black issue. It's simply because it's outside of the norm. It would be like having an all big girls issue. [re=2634461]R

  54. Katie says – reply to this
    54

An "all black" issue of Vogue is the exact opposite of diverse. If there were an "all caucasian" issue printed, everyone would be up in arms.

  55. Whitn says – reply to this
    55

The All-Black issue does promote diversity. It makes a point to the fashion industry: "Don't say there aren't any good black models around. In fact, here are dozens right here who are just as beautiful and talented as the white models. Now, why aren't they working more?" Hopefully, fashion execs will realize that more black models should be popular. If it were just as simple as not bringing up the issue or making a point on how black models AREN'T used, then the industry would look more diverse right now. But year after year, runways feature all white models, magazines only have white models on the cover and ad campaigns only have whites in them. So, someone must make a stand and make an EXPLICIT point about race. As long as it is ignored and overlooked, minorities will continue to get the shaft. It works the same way in the rest of culture. The fashion industry can't keep doing this decade after decade. It wasn't until the 1990s that a black woman (Veronica Webb) was even given a cosmetics contract for a big company. Ten years later, Estee Lauder only JUST signed their first black model (Liya Kebede). I applaud Steven Meisel and Italian Vogue for trying to make a point. I hope the industry is listening.

The "All White" Issue thing isn't funny, its just stupid. Open up some magazines or go to some shows and they are already "All White". That's the point of diversifying, you idiots.

  57. Whitn says – reply to this
    57

Re: mizzy – When did Naomi want to be the only black model? It's funny you should say that because Naomi has always been very vocal about the racism in the fashion industry, even at the height of the supermodel era (during the 1980s and early 1990s). She was even apart of the Black Girls Coalition, an organization formed by Bethann Hardison (model agent) to help promote black models and expose the challenges they faced in the industry. Tyra, Iman, Veronica Webb, Karen Alexander and other popular black models were apart of this group as well in the early 1990s.

  58. Anna says – reply to this
    58

I agree that celebrating every aspect of diversity is important. There is still just so much emphasis on colour differences. Instead of promoting an all black issue, just start having people of every colour in the magazines more often on a regular basis. If they think people wouldn't take notice, they'd be very wrong.

  59. Whitn says – reply to this
    59

Re: Anna – I'm pretty sure that's the point. They want magazines to start using more black models (and other races) in general. This is just a startling "attention-grabbing" way to make the point. Almost to say, "When we feature an issue with all black models, it's a huge deal because it's so against the norm. But how many magazines have issues with nothing but white models?" Thoughts to ponder. Besides that, the issue is great. The editorials are beautiful and they truly make you wonder why Chanel Iman, Yasmin Warsame, Sessilee Lopez and several others don't get as much exposure as their white peers.

and also, there are plenty or different races modelling already. Look on the american eagle bags, magazines, adds for all sorts of products. Just because former white people were unfair and morally screwed up doesnt mean we dont have a diverse world. I live in Vancouver though…. and canada is REALLY diverse. so i could be wrong about other places.

So MAYBE the problem is that FUKKIN WINTOUR — all 70ish years of her, is OUT OF TOUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    .

And for Wintour to come to terms with the FACT that her purpose in life is not just to wear sunglasses at fashion runways.

    65

until the public does not notice the color racial prejudice lives. Do you not see that by making the issue "all black" it escalates the issue of race. I never heard of no "white entertainment television" or "NAAWP" but somehow it is allowed to exist. When do white people get to celebrate their heritage?

  66. 66

I love diversity because it is the stuff of life, but no, I don't like Naomi, nor do any of my friends. She makes it tough for those coming up after her. She has needed mental health counselling for years, byt apparently ignores her obvious terrible tantrums as something she deserves because she is rich and famous. Fortunately, she won't be for long because of her age. So I hope she has saved her millions because she will need it one day.

  67. Whitn says – reply to this
    67

Whiteness is celebrated everyday in the media. The magazine covers, television shows, ad campaigns, runway shows etc use a white standard of beauty. If whiteness is what they consider beautiful, it automatically excludes other races. People HAVE to draw attention to the subject of race if they want to produce diversity. You have to draw attention to rather than ignore an ailment in order to find a cure, no? Making an all-Black issue makes a statement, no doubt. But the statement of the media's prejudice has made a statement for YEARS and no one but a few people had any problem with it.
