American Vogue may be in the shitter, but Italian Vogue is red hot!
Its 'all black' July issue was so popular that they went back and reprinted 10,000 issues for the US market.
The July Italian Vogue featured only black models in its editorial spreads.
Who said people of color don't sell magazines???
The notorious Naomi Campbell was the cover girl.
Photog Stephen Meisel, though, said that there was a "glaring lack" of black models in the advertisements.
Fashion houses Valentino, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Dior featured white models.
Hopefully all magazines will show more diversity in every issue!

Conde Nast attributes that quote otherwise…
"The reprint brought ad pages for issue up 30 percent, but ironically enough, there was a 'glaring lack' of black models in the ads, according to photographer Steven Meisel.
'Advertisers say black models don't sell,' he said."

i wish more magazines would jump on the bandwagon. black is beautiful!

Just a question…what would the reaction be if Vogue (or any magazine) tried to sell an "all-white" issue? The backlash would be unreal. Is this any less racist? Society is doing a great job ensuring kids will never see all people as being equal…

Re: hanna – HAW HAW Lovesit!
Hopefully all magazines will hire models based on their qualifications and talent instead of their colour or race. God, it's so frustrating how people like Perez keep babbling about 'diversity'. One could think that quality is the most important factor here.

Re: Anna –
THERE WOULD BE NO REACTION.
THOSE MAGAZINES ARE ALWAYS ALL WHITE!!!!
these magazines need to realize that skinny white women aren't the only kind of women in this world. american fashion magazines' sales wouldn't be in the toilet if they did realize that.
American Vogue will continue to go down hill. It's JUST ADS and no fashion shoots or layouts like Elle, InStyle, Allure and others. And if someone wants a mag that's really different they'll get W.
P.S. Naomi, like Kate Moss, should retire. If the Italians like her, please please let them keep her.
Re: Anna – Everything is already an "all white issue" u retard. That's why they're doing this feature to promote more diversity. Please refrain from speaking before you think about what u say!!!!!!!!!!!!
the fact of the issues is not that it's a balck issue it's more to promote diersity in fashion unlike the white moelds who are in every show they would use al least 2 black models and 1 asian compared to the rest the use of the issue is to show that other ethnicity can sell mags and point proven in which it did, and to some of the responses of an all white issue that's been done for so long look at the new vogue magazine it has all white women on it and no one's compaling the thing about perez site is he is not a fashion blog so he wouldn't kno anything about the state of minorities on popular fashion mags.
im sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy they started showing a diversity i hope they keep it like that!!!!!!!!!!
I was just waiting to see how many idiots would say, "what would happen if there was an all-white issue?" Practically EVERY OTHER ISSUE is the all-white issue! That argument is just as stupid as when people criticize BET for being Black Entertainment Television and say black people wouldn't like it if there was a WET. Hello! Every other channel is geared towards white people. Get over it.
an all black issue is literally the opposite of diversity.
Re: Kionn –
Very mature…I'm talking about PROMOTING an all-white issue, as they are doing with the all-black issue. You may feel magazines are all white, and I agree there is a huge ratio, (which I don't agree with), but they are not using 'all white' as a selling point.
Can you imagine what would happen if any magazine tried to print an "All-White" issue? It's ridiculous that this is applauded as "diversity", when in actuality it is only fueling the racism that everyone is trying to get rid of. Stop drawing attention to how we're all different (by printing a proclaimed "All-Black" issue) and then perhaps the issue will resolve.
A
reverse racism at it's best.
Re: Anna –
I think the last 15 issues were all white, though I could be wrong
Re: Fidel –
Who exactly is they? Black people? Last time I checked black people don't run Vogue. ASS!!!
[re=26I33794]Re: Anna[/re] I HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING BUT YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURES. FOR YEARS BLACKS WERE NOT IN ANY MAGAZINES, TV SHOWS, PLAYS, BASKETBALL GAMES RO ANY SPORTING EVENTS. RARELY WERE THERE BLACKS ON SHOWS LIKE SIENFIELD OR FRIENDS, OR VEN WILL AND GRACE. BLACKS WERE NEVER THE NORM.
THEY HAVE CHINA TOWN , LITTLE ITALY ETC. AND NOW BLACK MODELS CANNOT GET ANY WORK. TRUST ME THERE HAVE BEEN PLENTY OF ALL WHITE VOUGUE ISSUES AND FASHION SHOWS. THIS BLACK ISSUE WAS TO HELP THE PROBLEM AND EVEN ENLIGHTEN PEOPLE TO THE ISSUE THAT THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS IN DANGER OF BEING "WHITES ONLY" AGAIN. AND UNLIKE RACIST PEOPLE, THEY ARE NOT KNOCKING OR HUTRING ANOTHER RACE SUCH AS THE KKK OR SKIN HEADS.
Like I said, I agree the ratio is high, and wrong, I just think by promoting the black/white separation we're making things worse, not better. Kids today probably wouldn't even notice skin colour as we do if it weren't constantly brought to their attention.
Re: NICOL – I FOR GOT TO SAY THAT AS A NON WHITE YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THERE IS A NEGATIVE IMPACT MADE WHEN YOU DONBT SEE PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIEK YOU ON TV AND IN MAGAZINES. THEY HAD TO CREATE EBONY AND ESSENCE MAGAZINE BECAUSE BLACKS WERE NOT IN MAGAZINES. THEY HAD TO CREATE B.E.T. BECAUSE WE DIDNT HAVE MANY TV SHOWS OR CARTOONS. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN AND NOT COMPLAIN WATCH A COOL DOCUM. CALLED ETHNIC NOTIONS.
Re: Anna – IT WASNT AN ANTI WHITE POST IT WAS MORE OF PROVING BLACK SELLS …AND BIG TIME. AND IT WAS JUST ONE ISSUE. JUST TO SHOW THERE IS A DEMAND FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR IN FASHION (I'D LOVE TO SEE ASIAN MODELS, LATINA , THE WHOLE FREAKEN RAINBOW) WE ARE A MIXED SOCIETY AND ALL HUMAN BEINGS AND I BELIVE ALL GODS CHILDREN AND HELL MOST OF BLACK AMERICANS HAVE 60% WHITE HERITAGE ANYWAYS.
Re: LKP – I agree
Its a beautiful issue, one of their best, you wonder why thwy don't used more black models,,,,,,Naomi is a hypocrite, in her day she always wanted to be the only black model.
Re: Anna – People often use this reverse discrimination argument but unfortunately it makes no sense because 1) what they argue for already exists (all-white magazines) and 2) more importantly, blacks were never given opportunities before and these advances are momentous - momentous enough to make it 'special' and have an all black issue. It's simply because it's outside of the norm. It would be like having an all big girls issue. [re=2634461]R
An "all black" issue of Vogue is the exact opposite of diverse. If there were an "all caucasian" issue printed, everyone would be up in arms.
The All-Black issue does promote diversity. It makes a point to the fashion industry: "Don't say there aren't any good black models around. In fact, here are dozens right here who are just as beautiful and talented as the white models. Now, why aren't they working more?" Hopefully, fashion execs will realize that more black models should be popular. If it were just as simple as not bringing up the issue or making a point on how black models AREN'T used, then the industry would look more diverse right now. But year after year, runways feature all white models, magazines only have white models on the cover and ad campaigns only have whites in them. So, someone must make a stand and make an EXPLICIT point about race. As long as it is ignored and overlooked, minorities will continue to get the shaft. It works the same way in the rest of culture. The fashion industry can't keep doing this decade after decade. It wasn't until the 1990s that a black woman (Veronica Webb) was even given a cosmetics contract for a big company. Ten years later, Estee Lauder only JUST signed their first black model (Liya Kebede). I applaud Steven Meisel and Italian Vogue for trying to make a point. I hope the industry is listening.
The "All White" Issue thing isn't funny, its just stupid. Open up some magazines or go to some shows and they are already "All White". That's the point of diversifying, you idiots.
Re: mizzy – When did Naomi want to be the only black model? It's funny you should say that because Naomi has always been very vocal about the racism in the fashion industry, even at the height of the supermodel era (during the 1980s and early 1990s). She was even apart of the Black Girls Coalition, an organization formed by Bethann Hardison (model agent) to help promote black models and expose the challenges they faced in the industry. Tyra, Iman, Veronica Webb, Karen Alexander and other popular black models were apart of this group as well in the early 1990s.
I agree that celebrating every aspect of diversity is important. There is still just so much emphasis on colour differences. Instead of promoting an all black issue, just start having people of every colour in the magazines more often on a regular basis. If they think people wouldn't take notice, they'd be very wrong.
Re: Anna – I'm pretty sure that's the point. They want magazines to start using more black models (and other races) in general. This is just a startling "attention-grabbing" way to make the point. Almost to say, "When we feature an issue with all black models, it's a huge deal because it's so against the norm. But how many magazines have issues with nothing but white models?" Thoughts to ponder. Besides that, the issue is great. The editorials are beautiful and they truly make you wonder why Chanel Iman, Yasmin Warsame, Sessilee Lopez and several others don't get as much exposure as their white peers.
I dont judge people based on their race… but if a magazine did an "all white" issue… people would be PISSED. But thats racist! Non???
that is not naomi campbell you keep showing that picture and it is natalie cole not naomi campbell
and also, there are plenty or different races modelling already. Look on the american eagle bags, magazines, adds for all sorts of products. Just because former white people were unfair and morally screwed up doesnt mean we dont have a diverse world. I live in Vancouver though…. and canada is REALLY diverse. so i could be wrong about other places.
Re: Anna –
I agree Anna.
I have always thought this.
How bout an Asian issue?
So MAYBE the problem is that FUKKIN WINTOUR — all 70ish years of her, is OUT OF TOUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.
Time for US Vogue to MOVE ON.
.
And for Wintour to come to terms with the FACT that her purpose in life is not just to wear sunglasses at fashion runways.
until the public does not notice the color racial prejudice lives. Do you not see that by making the issue "all black" it escalates the issue of race. I never heard of no "white entertainment television" or "NAAWP" but somehow it is allowed to exist. When do white people get to celebrate their heritage?
I love diversity because it is the stuff of life, but no, I don't like Naomi, nor do any of my friends. She makes it tough for those coming up after her. She has needed mental health counselling for years, byt apparently ignores her obvious terrible tantrums as something she deserves because she is rich and famous. Fortunately, she won't be for long because of her age. So I hope she has saved her millions because she will need it one day.
Whiteness is celebrated everyday in the media. The magazine covers, television shows, ad campaigns, runway shows etc use a white standard of beauty. If whiteness is what they consider beautiful, it automatically excludes other races. People HAVE to draw attention to the subject of race if they want to produce diversity. You have to draw attention to rather than ignore an ailment in order to find a cure, no? Making an all-Black issue makes a statement, no doubt. But the statement of the media's prejudice has made a statement for YEARS and no one but a few people had any problem with it.
Re: Anna – What are u sayin, the most popular magazines are all white, besides the very few tokens.
Re: Anna –
they DO have an all white issue….it's called
AMERICAN vogue…
quit thinkin that black people r gettin treated special when we learn all about whites n american history, music, fashion etc.
STOP SHOWING THIS GOLLIWOG!
GOLLIWOG GOLLIWOG GOLLIWOG
You know, most times I think you are full of yourself, then you go and do something like promote good causes and charities and you write about diversity. You're okay, Perez Hilton. :}
The reason Italian Vogue chose to do a black issue was because The runways of major fashion shows were becoming completely white, with the occasional token black model. There are only three black models who regularly walk major runways at this point. Those are Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman and Liya Kebede. These models were interviewed for American Vogue and They said that only once had they walked in the same show together. That's sad. SO for those of you who think the intent of this magazine was racist, it's not. It's to make people aware that models of color are still sexy, and just in time for th shows that will start in September. Let's see if there is more diversity then.
Re: nintoxication –
Well it will be totally different to have a ALL WHITE issue becuase what would be the point, WHY?……..i dont think there's people sayin "oh vogue doesnt have white models in it ever" its always full of white models!
Re: kendr –
WOW u dont know who Naomi is "WORLD FAMOUS SUPERMODEL"
U Must dont know fashion
Re: Anna – Thats a dumb remark. These magazines are all practically all white issues .
Re: krissyofcourse –
Ok hun, there doing a black issue because most of there issues have white models but u cant see that because you are white. after that they will hopefully have more diverse models but this is jus for a point
Re: Anna – Thats another stupid remark, yes they are, because in the grand spectrum of things to them white sells. If that wasnt the case there would be way more diversity in the modeling industry.
Re: Anna –
They done that for years…… Are you that stupid! Oh yes, u r!
Re: Anna –
You don't seem to get that it is still a very big ongoing problem. You are living in a bubble if you truly believe it isn't. You may not feel you are affected but black still are subject to mistreatment, or better yet watch CNN tonight and learn something.
Please white girls all black issue blah blah blah…..All year round i gotta see your white azzes laying down on American vogue so spare me…"can you imagine if it was all white" It already is you jack azz. pleaze and IM MIXED BLACK and white so give me a fukin break…just because u see black people on mtv dose not mean that we get a fair shot in the fashion industry or anything else for that matter..
With a lot of beautiful black models, they chose Campbell? The lady who assaults the "peons" is a notorious bitch and diva, generally unpleasant, self absorbed, unapologetic for her mean behavior. The lady should be blacklisted from magazines. Well calling her a lady is a joke too. Aside from that, I agree if vogue tried to push an "all white" issue there would be tremendous back lash. This is racist. Singleing out any race is racist. And the "it's selling" crap is bs, black models don't sell and there's a very good reason behind that: The majority of people who buy what they wear are white, the majority in america is whites by a lot. Even hispanics out number blacks. That's why ads don't feature them. The people who buy the crap the ads are selling are by the majority white. That's just how it is.
naomi looks like j.lo in that pic…but black
Re: Raven –
Wow with all the incoherent sentence structure and misspelled words and generally shitty grammatics, it's wonder you don't get more respect and credibility. Congrats for showing your colors. No pun intended.
This bitch is ugly as fuck. WHy would Italy make an all black issue, that doesn't make much sense to me, they sound like they're as weird as the French.
Everyone should check this issue out, it is an inspiration! There were actually four covers done; One with Naomi, one with Liya Kebede, one with Jourdan Dunn, and one with newcomer Sessilee Lopez. Beautiful. Bravo to the Italians for always being in the "now" and one step ahead of the game!
Re: that pic.
Is it right that a black person drive a better car than me?
"I have a dream, that one day, Negroes will outclass every other ethnicity at every opportunity."
Obama & Omarosa '08!
That bitch could handle them Taliban.
"You said what?! Gimme dat bazooka! Kablam! I will not be disrespected up in this cave!"
Is that a whale turd in a white coat or a gorilla? oh fuck its just a black chick.
Naomi was not te cover girl…they had a few of them…and she definitely wasn't the highlight…
Re: LKP – what talent? i work in the fashion industry..and believe me..no models are "talented"…those jobs are solely for the beautiful. thats why you only see easter europeans and russians in the industry who dont speak a word on english. you think they practice modeling or are talented? if by talent you mean a great genes, that would make sense…otherwise they would have anybodys doing the job.
wow. so progressive.
Let's see Jesse Jackson chop off the balls of anyone who puts a whole white vogue together.
Stupid, stupid people.
ok, bitches i used to live in san francisco for many, many years, and in europe too and in europe they see black people as exotic beauties and in the usa people see black people as dangerous, and wacky, no vogue covers, but three year probation for the nubian beauties, (bitches!!!) happily back in the tropic of cancer..
this pisses me off becuase diversity does not mean to include more black models! what about the asian models?!?! or the indian models?!?!?! why dont vogue feature a magazin with only asian models?!?! THERE ARE ALOT OF BLACK MODELS!!! WHAT ABOUT EMBRACING ASIAN BEAUTY?!?!
crack ho, evil, UGLY BITCH, SLUT MOTHER FUCKER. die money hora.
who the fuckin hell is "stephen" meisel? it's STEVEN you moron. i wish we had italian vogue here in the philippines…… that issue is rockin. naomi foreva!
Who in the hell cares?? Blacks really need to get over themselves, please.
Re: Anna –
They do all white issue all the time that was the point to show it in reverse.
W Magazine has all-white issues pretty much every issue.
Re: krissyofcourse –
You say that about 1 all-black issue but what about the all-white issues it's nothing different so obviously they aren't really being talked about this was the same thing just flipping the script with many models in the issue that would have probably never gotten a chance before because of their race.
only a moron calls a race specific issue diverse. perez has the iq of an ant. how would he feel about an all white issue. moron.
known Meisel for decades he's still the BeST.
All the idiots who keep saying why not have an all white issue are missing the point !!!vogue is ALWAYS AN ALL WHITE ISSUE thats why their doing this as a showcase. not say models of colour are better just that they are there … i have bought 21 copies of this issue and love it !!! i will treasure it forever andni hope Vogue will never have to do another one because from now own they will show diversity !!!!
