Being an emo kid could be illegal in Russia soon!
The government is trying to pass a laws that would heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.
The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that "emo" encourages depression and suicide.
There were mass protests by Russian emo kids this past weekend.
Dmitry Gilevich of Russian emo band MAIO said at a protest, "Expressing psychological emotions is not forbidden by law."
Poor emo kids!

yeah I read about this. Personally I think its rather stupid to target emos/goths especially when other kids/adults cut and commit suicide who dont follow that lifestyle. People don't cut themselves because the music told them to. Duh!!!

That law will never pass. A government cant pass a law on a someones personal feelings or dress sense but it is russia after all so who knows . . That said, I do agree that "emo" encourages depression and suicide. I have known a lot of people who have acted depressed and even cut just to fit into that circle.

Emo's aren't always "depressed" and suicidal. I have lots of emo friends, and generally, they are happy people. i myself being considered emo, am happy lots of the time. I don't think about killing myself 24/7.

That's terrible. I think finding a group to hang out with makes you less depressed, regardless of dress style and attitude. I was just a loner in school, though, so who knows? Maybe some groups can be hazardous to hang with….but still, to be blacklisted? That's a little harsh (and stupid).

really hating emo kids…. no, i'm from mexico and let me tell you that the things that happened wih emo kids here are really from the past and now you can be an emo kid living normally here…. some people like me are not happy with that movement but now we can live ok with each other…. the thing in russia is really awful but i just want to defend my country by saying that things now are ok with emos.

Russia has had one of the highest suicide rates in the world for quite a while now. I don't think being EMO has anything to do with it. More like rampant corruption, ailing economy and the dreary winters. Most emos are just going through a phase and only a few actually cut themselves let alone commit suicide… I've known 4 people that commited suicide and 3 of them were metal heads and 1 was an average guy. EMO music isn't even dark at all either. Not my style but to my ears it's very POP style music to me.
Another thought…teenagers (or anyone for that matter) don't need a certain style of clothes or music to feel depressed and want to kill themselves. it happens, it's a chemical imbalance which is hereditary.

What really sucks is that the word emo was turned into something connoting depression and darkness. Before that, depression and darkness was known as Goth. I'm sure there was another term for it before that. Early emo music from 2000 wasn't necessarily about depression, just extreme, raw emotion coupled with slowed down punk chords. Appleseed Cast, Pedro the Lion, and early Jimmy Eat World were what emo was at first.
