Savaged!

As we mentioned earlier this week, homophobe and hate monger Michael Savage completely trashed all autistic children and their parents on his radio show recently.

Most memorably when he said "I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99% percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

And now, finally, some radio stations are fighting back.

Making a step in the right direction is Mississippi.

Steve Davenport, head of the Super Talk network in Mississippi, called Savage's remarks "beyond inexcusable."

The network of seven stations has announced they will no longer carry Savage's radio show, Savage Nation, after his ridiculous remarks.

Davenport continues, “Effective immediately, Michael Savage and his Savage Nation Radio Show have been cancelled on all Super Talk Mississippi stations,”

Savage has also lost a major advertiser for his program in AFLAC insurance.

A statement released by the company says, “AFLAC has a strong commitment to helping children through the AFLAC Cancer Center and AFLAC foundation. We understand that radio hosts pick on any number of targets however we found his recent comments about autistic children to be both inappropriate and insensitive.”

Savage on the other hand is trying to validate what he said.

On his website, Savage writes, “My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community’s attempt to label too many children or adults as ‘autistic.’”

But if that were the case, why would he say that the problem with most autistic kids is that "They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”

John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says "We are asking him to be fired and we want to make advertisers aware of what he is broadcasting.”

What do U think should happen?

Hello 1984! Thank you, Thought Police, for making free speech in this country a thing alive only in books and memories. Political correctness has gone WAY too far. It's nice to know that I can say whatever I want…as long as the majority agrees with my view. Welcome to the machine.

GET OVER YOURSELVES, people. The man is a talk radio host. He is not known to be an unbiased news source. His job is to express his opinions and get a rise out of his listeners, NOT to be politically correct.

      Re: Tara
Freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever disgusting thought runs through your mind. There are a lot of things you can't say, that's why we have laws regarding terroristic threats, slander, liable, etc.
Secondly, and unfortunately, a lot of people don't take the time to get truly educated and do take misinformation on the tv, radio, and in magazines as the truth. This hateful, ignorant rant has definately done damage to the Autism community. I assure you, my child meets the diagnostic criteria for Autism, and if I could snap him out of it by yelling at him and telling him to quit acting like an idiot I would do it in an instant. Instead I spend my days taking him to and from therapies, doctors, social groups, etc, trying to give him the tools to function in this "free" society.
I wish there were simple answers for issues like this, but unfortunately there are not. All I'd like is to see people be a little understanding of people who are different than them. And if one radio talk show host can lose his job for not being understanding of racial and ethnic differences, than one shouldn't be able to keep his job for his lack of understanding of disabled children.

i understand that he has the right to have an opinion and whatnot. i just think that he went a bit too far with this, to be in the public eye and make such a comment is disgusting. i work with autistic children and see how they act and most of them are totally unaware of what is going on. a simple "no" to them wont help them. so i just think his comment was totally innappropriate.

I was incensed and thinking this man was a straight up no good insensitive jerk…[b]until I went ahead and read the transcript of the entire section.[b]Shame on you Perez for taking a small piece of a very large speech, and then hyping it something fierce to whip up the mindless drones that don't know any better. Lucky for me I decided to look for the whole story, otherwise I too would've jumped on the bandwagon, for no good reason.

By the way, for all you people getting outraged over this article, you guys need to listen to the entire speech first. Michael Savage doesn't just verbally abuse children with autism. In fact, he talks about his sympathy for true sufferers of autism. The comments Perez has chosen to highlight is strictly his views on children being diagnosed as 'autistic', when really it's nothing more than needing firm, loving, and attentive parenting. Honestly Perez, I'm starting to wonder what your agenda is.

You ma'am should not be allowed to be a Mother. I'm sorry to hear that you have a child with Autism and I am equally sorry for your son to have a Mother that is so blood hungry with misplaced rage - if you had taken the time to actually listen to the clip you would have used your brain and realized that Savage did NOT say ALL kids with Autism, but that sounds a little too hard for a foul mouthed hate monger like you.

Most of the parents in a rage on here don't know what they are so pissed off about because they obviously have not even listened to the video - I have a feeling these parents are defensive 24/7. Parenthood sounds absolutely miserable these days!

      619

Savage, just like Michael Moore or Rush Limbaugh likes to shock people into waking up. I am a liberal, I can still appreciate the bigger point that he was trying to make which is the fact that KIDS ARE OVER MEDICATED in this country. My mother is a speech pathologist who works with autistic kids - autism is real. But another problem is that sometimes it is hard for Dr.s and psychologists to make behavior based diagnosis on kids who may simply have straight up behavior problems. I think Perez is quoting Savage in a very limited context to make him look bad because Perez views him as a "homophobe." Maybe if Perez listened to him more he would know that Savage isn't all that crazy… Just like if conservatives listened to Michael Moore they could see some of his logic. Before you judge, try and get ALL of the information!

If you actually listen to what he SAID not just PARTS of his conversation…. he is basically just trying to raise awreness of the fact that prescription drugs prescribed to children have raised 8-10% in the past year, and the rate of children born with autism and ADHD has not exceeded 8-10% in the past year. Therefore, doctors are meeting with children for 15-30 min. appointments and dignosing them and sendingthem away with a prescription to drugs. I don't think its possible for a child to be dignosed in that short period of time. From personal experience it took 3 months for me to be diagnosed with ADHD. Doctors are not doing their job, they are just looking at symptoms and prescribing something so they can be on time for their next appointment. Yes, Savage could have worded his opposition in a different way but basically he is trying to save the future of america from becoming dependent on prescription drugs.

Ok Seroiusly….if everone took what you said as actually fact then that would be mean that Samantha Ronson is really a man, that Brit should have died last year adn a whoel bunch of other garbage. Micheal Savage is a very smart man who was trying to make a very valid point and overstepped by his very broad genrealiation. Nothing should happen to him as far as I'm concerned except that people can call his show and tell him what they think. He always lets people escpecially people who do not agree with him to have thier say…
Children with autisim are way over medicated …that is a fact… and it is also a fact that with proper care, teaching and loving encouragement most tof these kids do not even need to me medicated. That was the main point he was making along witht he fact that this autisim spectrum that was founded just recently is a load of crap and allows for kids with behavioral issues to be diagnosed as mildy autistic..which is just ridicoulous. In the 90's there was a huge outbreak of kids diagnosed with ADD….way too may kids were put on ritalin and then had to take other meds to help the side effects of that when in all reality if parents would learn to parent then much of this could resolve itself. This is not to say that some kids do have autisim and ADD just that it is being diagnosed too easily and quickly in most cases.

Anyway, in The USA Savage is entitled to his opinion just like you are entitled to your opinion.

HIS COMMENTS WERE TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT!!! HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW KIDS WHO REPEATEDLY LINE OBJECTS IN A ROW ARE BEING DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM AND THAT 99% OF THESE KIDS ARE BEING MISDIAGNOSED AND THEIR LIVES ARE BEING RUINED BECAUSE OF IT!!!

Did the Non-Reverand Jesse Jackson get "blackballed" for his comments on Barack Hussein Obama and the N-WORD- NO! Why - because he is a far left wing liberal democrat like 90% of the media. Savage's comments are completely true and you should be ashamed of yourself for leading the poor young people in this counrty who get 99% of their political news from entertainment blogs and other Clinton Sponsored interest groups.

He has a lack of tact, but he makes a valid point. People are so quick to diagnose their kids as autistic, because they are unable to take the responsibility of raising & disciplining their children. Some may be in fact autistic, but honestly autism isn't that common - everyone can't have an autistic child - some *are* just brats. The way Parents are quick to medicate rather than get involved. No wonder kids are so screwed up.

I will admit what he said was hurtful to parents of autistic children, but the truth can be hurtful. I don't think he should be fired, but he should issue an apology to those who are actually afflicted with the disorder. Everyone at one point in their life is going to say something that offends another. We would all be out of a job if we got fired for saying something someone didn't like.

      Wait…

So how does this theory work for families with a mixture of autistic and non-autistic?

I have 5 kids. Three are not autistic. In fact, they have consistantly been ahead of the curve. And two are autistic. So, did just decide to not discipline the two who are, while firmly disciplining the others? I'm the same person. Same parent. Two different outcomes. (Well, I would argue five different outcomes.)

Sorry. Even though I am a conservative, and I do uphold Mr. Savage's right to free speech, he is full of crap. One reason he needs to stop talking is people ARE taking is ill-informed comments and running with them and that is hurting the kids who really are suffering with autism. We already have to deal with so much. We don't need more ill-informed jerks.

I don't think he was right by any means, but he does have a right to his opinion and according to the constitution of this wonderful country that we love, he has a right to express that opinion through his words.

I'm so tired of seeing cry babies whine that their freedom of speech is being violated and then turn around and do the same to someone who doesn't agree with them. It's just a disgusting double standard.

But here's the thing, all of you that feel righteous in calling out Michael to deal with 10 autistic children or your caseload for a day will not get the "just desserts" effect you are looking for. He grew up with a SERIOUSLY disabled brother and a lot of the care fell to him when he was young. He was also a teacher so he wouldn't be as overwhelmed as you would wish.

Also, you all must have selective outrage. If Michael Savage is more outrageous, shocking and hateful in one week of programs than Howard Stern is in ONE half hour show then you get a brownie button. Howard makes fun of everything and everyone and has live sex acts on the show for God's Sake! Where is your parental outrage now!!??

Lastly, Knee Jerk Responders or KJR's often end up with egg on their face. But, keep ingesting the Reader's Digest version of the news from the networks and Perez as your daily pablum and be happy in your world of righteous indination.

as the sister of an older brother with autism i can assure it did not happen on the lack of good parenting or improper substance abuse during pregnancy. sometimes these things just happen. so before people go and say it's a bunch of bs try living with a person with autism. get your facts straight.

i think the man is ignorant. if autism is so fake then why can an infant as young as six months old be diagnosed with autism. he needs to be better educated on the matter.

Bunny– you are just like Savage. . . uneducated! Iw ould suggest that you go read a few articles, or perhaps go visit a center for children with autism. Actually, it would be great if you and Savage went together!! Anyone who says autism is fake is obviously a very ignorant person, and I feel sorry for u and Savage both. There is nothing fake about a child who can not participate in their environment-and some will never be able to speak! FYI–it has nothing to do with the parents, but has been linked to genetics and enviornmental factors So while I do agree with free speech, I do think that people should know the facts and educate themselves before they open their mouths!

I agree with Savage 100%. Is it just a coincidence that as spanking and disciplining your child became frowned upon, this bullshit "Autism" racket started rearing it's ugly head? I think not.

I think his sponsors should offer him a deal. He has to work with an autistic program in order to keep his sponsors. They are letting him off the hook by firing him or dropping him. Let him stay with a family that has an autistic child for awhile. I will offer him a room. He can spend everyday with my son. I would rather him be educated about Autism than to let him off the hook. I think he would change his mind.

The problem with people who spout off about wildly innappropriate opinions publicly is that they are too ignorant to realize that if you express such off base opinions, you must be able to back your opinions up with proof of study, experience, knowledge, illustrations, etc. to maintain your credibility. For instance, I don't talk politics with my father, because he has a Ph.D. in poly-science, and I would never win a debate with him. An intelligent person who deserves to be heard would have something to back their theories up with.

Secondly, he mistakenly paired his disgust with the epidemic of labeling many children with something to describe behavioral problems and his frustration with the lack of parenting used in our current culture, and brought in a scientifically proven disorder as a poor example of an increasingly label. Anyone who has known an autistic person knows how much distress they feel. If they are given the means to communicate, they often express how much they have had to hold inside because their bodies don't cooperate in expressing their emotion. Who would choose that? It isn't a behavioral problem.

Someone should bitch slap this conservative Christian Republican mother ****er and then ask their spychics to wish all his children be afflicted with autism. Perhaps that would be good enough for this evil horrid of a human b(e)(itch)ing.

Re: Big M – IF AUTISM IS SUCH A "FAKED" CONDITION, THEN WHY DID MY SON HAVE TO GO THROUGH OVER A YEAR OF EVALUATIONS, SEEING DOCTOR AFTER DOCTOR, NOT ONCE DID ANYONE OF THEM SAY TO MEDICATE HIM! HE IS GOING THROUGH SPEECH AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY. HE IS NOT, NOR WILL HE EVER BE MEDICATED. SO FOR ALL OF YOU WHO THINK THAT AUTISM AUTOMATICALLY RELATES TO TONS OF PILLS AND DRUGGING YOUR CHILD ON A DAILY BASIS, YOU ARE JUST AS IGNORANT AS THE IDIOT YOUR LISTENING TO ON THE RADIO. UNTIL YOU HAVE A CHILD THAT YOU HAVE TO WATCH SUFFER WITH THIS DO NOT DARE SAY YOU KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOUR TALKING ABOUT. MY SON DID NOT SPEAK A WORD UNTIL HE WAS ALMOST 4 AND STILL HAS WHAT THEY CALL SILENT SEIZERS. BUT YET YOU CLAIM HIS CONDITION IS "FAKE"!! DO SOME DAMN RESEARCH AND YOU'LL SEE THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY STATED THAT THE MERCURY IN THE SHOTS THAT ARE GIVEN TO CHILDREN ARE ONE OF THE CAUSES OF AUTISM. YOUR PARENTS GOT THEM, YOU GOT THEM, THEN BY THE TIME THE CHILD GETS THEM DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA OF THE AMOUNT OF MERCURY THEY HAVE IN THERE BODY. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK.

AND YOU CAN TAKE YOUR BLAH BLAH BLAH, AND STICK IT UP YOUR UNINFORMED ASS BECAUSE ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT AUTISM KNOWS THAT WHAT I SAID WAS THE TRUTH. PEOPLE LIKE YOU SHOULD BE SENT TO SPEND TIME WITH AN AUTISTIC CHILD FOR A COUPLE DAYS THEN MAYBE YOU WONT BE AS IGNORANT TO THE FACTS.

Re: chris – If you would actually listen to the clip and stop yelling in CAPS LOCK, you would see that Savage did not say all children (he, as well as I, believe in true Autism cases and are not bashing real medical intervention) - he was actually trying to wake this country up to the dangers of over diagnosis and over medication that is running rampant, but if you want to call me the "ignorant one" to make yourself feel better, go ahead.

Bunny- you are an idiot. You have no fathomable idea about what autism is apparently. I have two autistic brothers and having autism has absolutely NOTHING to do with smoking or drinking while pregnant. I can't even begin to describe how idiotic you are by making that comment. And if you did know anything about it, you would know that they have found that these children have a genetic predisposition to this disease and that the mercury in these shots may not be helping the case any as well. You are dimwitted and ignorant and I feel sorry for you and your so called reasonings. Sorry if I used words too big for you. Also, this guy is even more of an idiot for saying that these kids need fathers to tell them not to be a moron. Even though "he says" he meant that toward the kids that are being diagnosed even when "he thinks" they are just brats, what he is saying is that the "real" autistic kids are morons. Wow. He really tried hard to clear that up. Your opinion is garbage Mr. Savage. How about you read up a little more on a subject you are not familiar? I live it. Firing is called for.

True he is allowed his say but I think he should leave the diagnose to doctors as he hasn't a clue what he is talking about autism is a real condition which I hope he actually really looks into then he can know what a jerk off he was for saying such things

If your family members do INDEED have true cases of Autism than it's absolutely absurd for you to get pissed off. If your family members are NOT true cases, than you would have something to feel guilty about.

Come on people…it's not that hard to understand, but judging from the holier than thou types on this board, I'm not surprised that you don't "get it".

He is the only voice of wisdom in this country, and I totally agree with him. Parents have no clue how to treat their kids so they just ignore behavior until their kids control them. So what do parents do get them to the doctor and say that their kids are out of control and then the get put on meds. Yes there are some kids that need meds but not all. Savage is a doctor and has written books about Autism and know a whole lot on the subject. I know he can be a ass sometimes but if you look past the ego he really knows what he is talking about.

      Re: tana
UMMMMMMM, exactly what books did he write about Autism? He wrote a book about natural cures for ADD/ADHD.
This man knows nothing about Autism, and trying to play Mr. Niceguy and claim he was trying to address the issue of overmedicating children-which, by the way MANY in the Autism community are concerned about-is a too late attempt to make himself not look like a total butthole.
And where are all these fake Autistic kids? I had to jump through a lot of hoops before my son was officially diagnosed *AND* we have NEVER EVER been offered drugs to treat him. The popular treatments for these kiddos is THERAPY-speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, applied behavior analysis, floor time. I don't know too many who use any kind of meds on their Autistic children.
Furthermore, there is no money to be made off an Autism diagnosis. We spent thousands of dollars on treatments for my son, were unable to pay bills, had friends buy us groceries several times…if anything an Autism diagnosis is a financial death sentence.
Sorry, but this guy is way off the mark.

I agree with savage. They medicate all these kids for every problem that exist. Also the thing about them being the way they are because they are "spoiled brats" i think is about right i have a stepbrother is is autistic and its all because he is spoiled beyond beleif. if he wasnt so spoiled he would be a "normal" teen. I honestly think savage deserves to keep his job, he is a very intelligent man that seems to know what he is talking about.
