Google vs. Wikipedia: It's War!

Looks like Google wants to add another trophy to their collection.

Nothing will stop them from global domination!

Wired magazine reports that the big G has launched a service called Knol - short for 'knowledge' - which is basically a different flavored Wikipedia.

Watch out Wiki, Google wants your crown!

The biggest difference between the two knowledge sharing services is the 'ownership' of posts.

As y'all know, on Wikipedia a person can't really 'own' a post. What you see on Wiki is basically everyone's 2 cents about a topic.

Google's Knol gives you the opportunity to 'own' a post about a subject without 'rejecting the wisdom of the crowd'. And, unlike Wikipedia, your 'identity' must be verified (via a credit card or phone number) before your posts go live. Once an author creates a 'knol', the general public can improve it. People can suggest corrections, edits and amendments to the content. Readers can also leave comments alongside the content.

However, the author is the arbiter of the item itself. She/he can reject suggestions BUT can't delete the comments. There's no limit on how many people can write 'knols' on the same subjects, but the guys at Google expect 'the inferior ones' to take a back seat in search results while searchers encounter the best ones immediately.

Here's the big kicker to us, though. There's money involved in the Google option!

If authors OK it, Google will compensate them with revenue from advertisements served by the company's AdSense program.

Google has said Knol's not all about the money. It's about getting the best info out there to those who need it!

$ure. What ever they say!

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales spoke out about Google's foray into the space that's been dominated by Wikipedia: "What is the added value? People already can put up web pages somewhere on the internet, put some ads on it if they want to get revenue or not put ads if they don't want the revenue."

There's nothing wrong with a little competition, right?

Which domain name would they use? knol.com, -.net, -.org are all taken. Knol.com is a German page, which even commented on google's plans saying they arent about to sell their domain…

I don't understand why you are so skeptical and negative about this Perez. How is it all about the money when, unlike Wikipedia, Google wants to SHARE the money with the people who actually CONTRIBUTED?? Google is just trying to make a much better version of Wikipedia, as they did with Yahoo and other search engines originally. I don't see ANYTHING bad about that. Your short sightedness makes me embarrassed to be a fellow NYU alumni sometimes.

wiki is screwed im sure google sends them tons of traffic
now google will send traffic to knowl and make some money off it
if your business drives a significant amount of traffic from googles organic listings
better have something up your sleeve.
How long until the first result for every search is a google owned company?

Go Google, and good luck. Wiki is one of the most pernicious sources of misinformation the world has ever seen. There's a reason no serious academic program will accept citations to Wiki.

Knol. Is that the best they could come up with?
Reminds me of something you'd buy in ikea.

Wikipedia is just too cool. Where else can you find information about more or less everything under the sun AND a quote section!?!

    28. Aud says – reply to this

      28

Actually, Google Knol is just like an even older website - one that predates Wikipedia and LJ and most other community posting sites…it's called www.Everything2.com, or E2 for short. Check it out, educate yourself, read up on the comparisons already made on Cnet.

    29. WikiT says – reply to this

Perez, in fact Wikipedia is not just someone's two cents. there are TONS of rules and regulations that govern is information stays on wikipedia long term. Primarily - it has to be sourced by a reliable source. Second, Wikipedia is run by a nonprofit…and the information is copy left……this means the information can be and HAS been used to benefit many schools and kids that don't have access to educational tools b/c lack of money. Several textbooks have been created, and other type of resources. Additionally, wikipedia does NOT accept advertising…that means that information can't be changed/challenged b/c an advertiser doesn't like it. keep Wikipedia alive, and keep it free…..their motto: "Creating a Global community where everyone has free access to information and education, regardless of how much money they have, or where they can from"

Fact: Did you know that Wikipedia exists in 255 language versions, created by native speakers of a particular language? Ie, they are not direct translations. THis means that we are also collecting cultural information, that otherwise might be lost……HELP WIKI!!!! FREE CULTURE!!!

      30

Wikipedia is full of false information. Most typically is good but watch out. Anyone with an axe to grind or anyone who wants to post false information about something can post lies.

    34. long says – reply to this

      34

      Wikipedia is independent and awesome.
Google is not. It's all about the $$$$$$, as always.
I use WIKI anytime I'm researching something. I'm not about to change that b/c Google tries to copy. Losers.

    35. 35

I use wiki and imbd. There are some things that bother me about knol…..such as the inability for the owners to delete comments. What if they are abusive, slanderous or false statements? Would the person/estate/organization, on which the page is based on, be able to sue the owner for slander or defamation of character? Would Google be offering legal representatives for the owners?

I will stick with wiki and imbd…they have yet to lead me astray.

    36. Obama says – reply to this

      36

Only the uneducated and high school losers use Wikipedia as an information source. Intelligent people know it is 100% totally unreliable in it's facts. OF course, this is where the Obamatrons get their information and that's why Obama looks like such a moron during many of his speeches.
