'Green' Fad Not $elling

algore.jpg

Looks like Hollywood and the media might have effed things up a bit, just as 'serious' environmentalists had feared they would according to a new report.

When 'going green' became the cause of the moment, the true greenies worried that 'green' was in danger of becoming a fad. As a fad, important environmental messages would be classified as, gasp, pop culture.

There are signs that the environmentalists were on to something.

The New York Times reports that the advertising industry is pulling back from green-themed marketing, having "grasped the public's growing skepticism over ads with environmental messages".

Additionally, 'green' themed magazine issues are not selling well at the newsstands.

For example, Time's Earth Day issue was the newsweekly's third-lowest-selling issue of 2008 so far at 72,000 copies sold. A typical issue of Time sells about 93,000 copies.

The 'fad' must have done some good, though?

Are y'all at least a little more Earth friendly?

Of course, Al Gore turned it into a trendy cause that sheep celebrities made worse. Celebs such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would show up to these trendy functions via private jet! Now how much does that pollute the earth? Ridiculous and laughable.

Instead of telling us what causes global warming (WE ALREADY KNOW) and to change our stupid lightbulbs (WE ALREADY HAVE) how about informing us with more products we can buy and where we can get them!!!!!!!!!! I have every single magazine on GW, drive a prius, unplug everything, use eco friendly soaps, stopped using plastic bags, etx, BUT THATS ALL….WHY? I would love to be more earth-friendly if they could make it affordable, especially in this market. Literally everything that is "organic" is double or triple the price of its regular item. People can't afford it in this economy. Same goes for the cars. Not only are they way more expensive, but if you buy the car and parts break down down the road, their parts are more expensive than on a normal car, so in the long run you don't save that much money at all. Of course the point is to help the planet, but not if it's going to make me bankrupt. I do however, take my own reusable bags to the grocery…although I don't notice anyone else doing it when I'm there.

P…..dont knock the prius… I get 60 miles to the gallon, over 500 miles with ONE tank (and its an 8 1/2 gallon tank) and spend less then 100 bucks on gas a month……Its more helpful than you think and if you take care of it, the battery is fine……My brother spends $900 to get the same mileage I do on $90. Its better than nothing……

It's always a good idea to be sceptical of marketing. It's marketing, after all. When people have good habits, it's easy for them to judge what products are really "greener" and which aren't.
    .
I bring my own bag to the grocery store, my own cup to Starbucks (.10 cent discount adds up), try not to order food to go to cut back on waste, of course, recycle and walk to work or take the bus. None of these things are very drastic, but it all helps, much more than getting glossy advertisements in my mailbox about how "green" some wasteful, unnecessary product is.
    .
    .
I'm more impressed with products that feed into my normal habit to cut down on the waste use for packaging, etc. than those that start up add campaigns about how green they are.

Al Gore is a hypocrite. His energy bill is more now than it ever was and he's made $100M on this "mission" of his. He is the father of all liars. Remember the internet that he invented, him and Tipper and Love Story. Believe me we need to be taking care of our planet, but not be given advice by some loon flying all over the country back and forth in jets telling us not to use gas. The planet's weather has gone in cycles for as long as they can track it, ice age = no carbon fuels, floods, on and on. Are we contributing to it, you bet. What we need to do find a way to unload the monkey on our back as a nation from having to be held hostage by the fuel-rich arab nations. No offense to arabs, but we need to become less dependent on oil which is going to take years. We created this monster with our monster SUVs, we need to deal with it, but not take Big Al's word for anything.

Maybe it isn't from the celebs promoting it, maybe it is because people are starting to finally realize global warming is a bunch of BS.

  24. 24

All the green fad has really done is add misleading labels and statements to products that aren't really much better for the environment or naturally-made at all (like Clorox Greenworks, and tons of food products). It's a huge sham and rip-off. Besides, most normal people can't afford to go green; if you do it right, it costs a fortune.

  25. Maria says – reply to this
    25

I think the issue has been that companies with very little environmental commitment have co-opted the "green" message for marketing campaigns and the audience has become suspicious of ALL "green" messages because of that. But, I think it is totally a GOOD THING that going "green" is becoming part of pop culture and is the new cool thing to do. Seriously, being wasteful and "trashy" is so yesterday!

    PS - Love you Perez.

  26. 26

People don't want to know what is happening to the earth. If they don't read about it, if they don't know about it…then the earth is fine. People don't want to take responsibility. They want to think everything is OKAY!

  27. Dak says – reply to this
    27

The green "fad", with celebrities jumping on the bandwagon, carbon credit bullshiz (a panacea for the rich), and politicians emitting hot air on the subject (too bad we couldn't harness it) obstructed the real message about what is happening in terms of pollution and climate change. The most positive development is that gas prices are rising to the degree that people are forced to reduce their consumption. This is the only way to get people to change their habits. The solution is simple: consume less. People will only do that if they are hit hard in their wallets.

No it's not a fad! My grandmother was born in 1896, I grew up with her reusing and recycling EVERYTHING! She was raised not to waste. When I was a kid, milk came in glass bottles, that were reused. Coke came in glass bottles that were reused. It is the way the world worked before plastic was invented. Paper is the easiest to recycle. Start small. MAKE IT A HABIT!!

    Re: Trish

You don't have spend money to be more environmentally conscious. In fact, conserving is a much better way to go than buying all kinds of new "green" things. It is actually pretty easy. Drive less. Turn your lights off. Buy less new stuff. Buy secondhand and vintage everything as much as possible (this is a very green action that most people overlook). Instead of buying something new, restyle something that you own.

And, most importantly, talk to others about what you are doing.

More people are aware now - at least, it paved the way for people who "go green" to be more accepted - it's important b/c people aren't embarrassed to bring their own bags to the store, or stand at the dumpster sorting recyclables. For me it has added benefit - I'm really cheap and reuse teabags etc - if I say I do it for the environment, suddenly it has cache.

If one says they need more to work with, maybe they should go online do research themselves - Environmentalism is not about being a lemming as the other commenter said. If you're really pissed about organic food costs, grow veggies at home - Or spices - get a $3 basil plant - you have it forever.

Going truly environmental costs less - get a bike - take public transport - move into a smaller apartment closer to where you work - you're rent may be more but you save on transport and property maybe property taxes - make your own cleaners with lemon juice and vinegar… There is an endless list of things to do but people have to stop assuming they can only go green in sexy ways offered at Whole Foods - think outside the damn box!

If it sounds like too much work and u think the government should be do more (b/c truly if they made a few small regulations regarding corporate involvement, sweeping changes would make it so you didn't have to do as much everyday), then nottom line is, get involved politically or shut the hell up.

    1. When it's yellow, let it mellow
    2. Trader Joe's re-usable shopping bags
    3. Changed all regular light bulbs out to new flourescents
    4. Installed drought tolerant landscaping and weather-sensitive sprinklers
    5. TURNING OFF household lighting when not in use
    6. Keeping thermostat to 78 degrees during even the hottest weather
    7. Re-using water to water plants, like when you cook noodles
    8. Using environmentally friendly cleaning products such as vinegar, baking soda, etc.
    9. Shorter showers
    10. BUYING ORGANIC
    11. Planting fruit trees

In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former vice president’s home energy use surged more than 10 percent, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.
    .

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,”
said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.
“Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”
    .

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

    People, ALL OF YOU,
Please don't let this become a fad. Please continue to recycle, conserve energy, and to think of ways that we can work together to reduce the human impact on the environment. If we keep going the way we are now, there will be no 3000 A.D. (or at least, we humans won't be here to see it).
First, environmentalism was a hippie thing, and people laughed at the hippies, but then it became mainstream and I was so excited, I thought, hey, even the companies that make millions off of their destructive tactics will have to change their ways. We will all, together, change our ways! I would like to continue to think that way.
Please, teach this in your schools, to your kids, to everyone. Encourage politicians to prioritize the issue. We should not live like scavengers upon this earth. We should respect the place that we have been given to live in and not leave our 'trash' everywhere. And if you believe in God, do you really think that God expected us to trash the place?
