Olympic Hopeful Tests Dope Positive

swimmer.jpg

U.S. swimmer Jessica Hardy won't get to compete at the Olympics in Beijing.

According to reports, the Southern California native tested positive for a banned substance.

Hardy can pursue appeals with the American Arbitration Association and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

With just two weeks til Beijing, Hardy could appeal directly to the arbitration court, whose ruling would be final and binding.

Typically, a first-time doping offense results in a two-year ban.

Hardy earned spots on her first Olympic team in her best event, the 100 breast, and the 50 freestyle and 400 free relay.

She was expected to be a medal threat in the 100-meter breaststroke, and to play an important part on the U.S. 400-meter free relay team, and possibly the 400 medley relay.

If she's really innocent she should totally appeal.

Drugs are bad!

They always shatter dreams!

the banned substance was clenbuterol and its prescribed to people with asthma and breathing disorders as a decongestant. I hope she can still go to the olympics. I hope it turns out to be fine. Good luck to Jessica.

I swam with Jessica when we were high school age on the Mission Viejo Nadadores, and there is NO WAY she would do this. Many common medications fall under the category "stimulants", even things like sudafed, and tests are botched and interpreted incorrectly more often than one might think. She is a hard working athlete with the utmost integrity, and has worked every day of her life to achieve this goal. Don't judge people based on allegations. GO JESS! I BELIEVE IN YOU!

Re: Krist – I grew up swimming with her on the Nadadores, too… and was REALLY close friends with her. I hate that this is even on perez. The substance at question is administered for colds and asthma. She tested NEGATIVE on 2 of the 3 tests. The results are irregular. This is not her. This is not something that she would do… I hate that everyone is forming opinions on her… She's not a druggy. She's an athlete. and an AMAZING one at that. Keep her in your prayers and hope this all works out in her favor. She has hired the best sports lawyer in the country to help her through this mess.

If she was taking clenbuterol for a breathing disorder, she would have it approved by a doctor and registered with USA Swimming.

She has been through testing since 2005 when she first started with the National Team, she would never do anything to intentionally jeopardize her swimming career; its her passion. She is such an amazing young women and I know she would never dope.

Recently, a swimmer was banned from the USA National Team because he tested positive. He was taking supplements with ingredients that were approved to take but it turned out not all of the ingredients of the supplement were listed, he ended up suing the drug company and won a lot of money, it took him a year and a half though.

I'm surprised she wasn't smarter about what she put in her body. There was a skeleton athlete in the winter Olympics thrown out for taking Rogaine. I know some athletes stop eating and drinking out because the risk is too high. It just isn't worth risking the $$$$ athletes get from endorsements for a single gold medal.

I was feeling horribly bad once and so I went for a check up. I had all kinds of tests ran just to see if I had liver problems, kidney, thyroid etc… I was told to come back in a week for the results. My doctor told me that the only thing she found was mary jane in my system! I don't even do drugs not even alittle bit!!!! I was like "You need to redo my tests and take a sample of hair/blood because I don't do drugs!! She was like "It's ok I understand" but I was like "NO you don't understand I really don't do any drugs!!!!" She didn't believe me, but I really had not and do not. Later one of my friends told me I needed to have demanded a retest and have it took out of my file. Oh well

Perez… I think you need to reword your statement. No one is reporting she wont be able to compete at the Olympics. In fact, her name was on the official list of 596 athletes entered in the Beijing Olympics sent on Wednesday. Change your first statement, it is false.

    59

    two things to clear up
one- as its been pointed out several times, one positive test doesn't necessarily mean she was doping. several medications can cause a false positive to occur, and also tests can be done incorrectly which would again mess with the results. this is why they take two blood samples from athletes. so until the second sample comes back from testing it can't be conclusively determined whether she was doping or not.
two- as for the people who wondered why she didn't just stop using peds before the olympics since it was obvious they would test her. performance enhancers such as steroids have a certain amount of time where after an athlete stops using traces of the drugs are still in the blood. many athletes that do use peds for the olympics (or another summer event) will use them over the winter during the most intense training of the year so that they can recover and train better, building more muscle. then during the spring and summer the athlete starts resting and backing off training, during this time they would wean themselves off of the drug, taking less and less. the trick is though its very difficult to predict exactly when all traces of the ped will be gone from the blood, so athletes often overshoot and end up doping too late in the season. causing a test later to come back positive, even if they hadn't used in a month

The banned substance could have been something as innocuous as common ingredients found in cold medicines. Don't label this woman a steroid/illicit drug user before you know the facts ass monkeys.

doping and testing positive for "dope" are two different things. doping is basically transfusing anothers blood with your own for a short lived performance enhancement. not the same as testing positve for drug use!

Perez you and some of the comments are quick to judge someone when you don't know all the facts. If you are going to report about anything do so responsibly!!! She is a local Long Beach girl who has worked her whole life living for this dream and I hope her lawyers can work it out so she can go. These doping tests are not always correct, and she also tested negative as well. Jessica will prevail! My best wishes to her!

Re: JENNA – and neither is she. she is from a very affluent family and she is not a drug user.. she's tested positive for something used in asthma and cold medications… on one of the 3 days and 2 of the 3 tests of that day… stop being so mean to her. she's way nice… and just bc someone is from socal doesn't mean that they use drugs… norcal and the midwest is much more common for that stuff… she's innocent… let her lawyer prove it. 2 weeks!!!!
