A Worthwhile Cause

CLICK HERE to read up on and donate to a very worthwhile cause.

"Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) donations provide bedkits to children of any race and/or religion who will benefit the most; typically being located in underdeveloped and developing countries.

No portion of a bedkit donation is spent on administration — 100% reaches a needy child. Each $30 donation (Canadian funds) provides a bedkit that consists of a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet, blanket, mosquito net (if applicable), clothes outfit, towel and school supplies. Bedkit contents vary from country to country depending upon local needs.

Since its founding by Murray and Margaret Dryden in 1970, SCAW has raised over $20 million to provide bedkits for over 900,000 children in 32 countries. In 2009 we will reach our millionth child.

Every child is photographed with the bedkit, showing the donor's name/country (or special occasion message) on a label.

Each photograph is then mailed back to the original donor, providing a timeless way for the donor to remember the child who so greatly benefited from their generosity."

Fantastic cause, Perez! I've been to Honduras and seen, first-hand the devastation from the hurricanes. Nice you post these worthy causes. :)

Charity only perpetuates devestation and creates more crime and corruption. If you are looking to help someone, help yourself. We could all use a little help but we don;t have to look to others for help. Our existence alone provides us everything we could ever need. don't complicate things.

Those who can help themselves should. But Ken here obviously has access to the internet, so I'm willing to bet he also has access to food, clean water and sufficient shelter. That's a mighty high platform you're standing on if you seem to think charity is counterproductive. When you're enjoying a Pellegrino after your next yoga lesson, I hope you think for a minute and reevaluate your global view. Charity means a lot if it means you have a place to sleep at night.

i think its kind of sad that people will leave hundreds of comments of a picture of some celebrity with ms paint crack residue on their noses but they wont saying FIRST but they wont even show sympathy or better yet read about these worthwhile causes.

Re: ken – Ken how ignorant of you. These children sleep on a dirt floor with no pillow or blankets covered in bugs & mosquitos. What terrible karma you must have. If you give you will recieve. I can't even imagine the type of world we would live in if everyone shared your selfish attitude. How stupid of you to think we shouldn't be helping people less fortunate that us spoiled americans. Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a third world country? Think about it & stop being such an asshole!

Re: Jaelynn – did you not read about the home makeover loss? You cannot give anyone something that they couldn't give to to their own self. People exist in poverty because they see themselves as deprived. What is messed up is that you assume I have much wealth when indeed I don't. I just have given enough to see that it does nothing. The answer is to educate people that we come into the world with everything that we need, it is only our perceptions that create need for more than we have. I am not ignorant I just am human. I chose not to be more or less than simply that. I will not take pity on any other human becasue that would be demeaning to that person's existence.

Re: Jaelynn – arent't you assuming that being in a developed nation is better than being in an undeveloped country? Why are you the authority of what is better or worse, and why does everything come to good and bad. Why do we just assume that this is a place to give money because they have to have it "real bad". in many ways they have it much better since they are not bound to the slavery of a consumer based economy. Get off my ass and look at yourself for answers

rache, ken, jaelynn..you all have a point!
Ken: I live in a third world country, and believe me, many times people do need to be helped (at least to get off their feet) as they are really extremely poor… and Jaelynn, ken has a point in that sometimes, charities are corrupt and/or mislead people into believing the ought to be "given" and not "work" for something…like in Latinamerica (specially in Venezuela) where populism is causing a lot of damage to people…

Excellent charity! I have supported this charity in the past- it is a well-run, honest and a deserving charity. My fridge has pictures every year of children sitting infront of their bedkits- so excited to be able to have a good nights sleep without the worry of being bit by bugs.

My friends have gone on these trips to deliver the bedkits- paying for it out of their own pocket. They said it is an amazing experience. The children line up excited knowing that in just a few minutes it will be their turn to recieve their package giving them the first comfortable sleep they have ever have. Thank you for highlighting this charity!

I can not help but to feel pity for children who don't have a comfortable place to sleep, a pillow to rest their head, or a blanket when they're cold. Ken, I never made any assumptions that you were wealthy. I myself am not wealthy, but I've always has a closet full of clothes, a bed, school supplies, all the necessities to live here in our culture. These simple things to us are luxeries to others. Sure, a lot of people (modern, native tribes etc.) live happy & peaceful lives. The people/charities I'm referring to who could use our help, are starving, have no clean water supply, & anything to do with children. Anyone who gives money to a charity should do research to make sure the money is going to people who genuinly need it & that the money is going to something useful. Can you imagine the little children getting their package how happy they would be? If you would have wrote your original comment on the home makeover loss I wouldn't even have commented back. But I couldn't believe someone would discourage others from giving to a charity that helps innocent, poverty-stricken children. It blew my mind that someone actually thought like you do. Ken, you keep doin your thing; watchin out for yourself & takin care of your business. Karma is a bitch though. When you give nothing you get nothing in return.

Re: ken – Yeah, it's a huge, freaking liberal mistake to give some poor, little kids a warm bed to sleep in at night. Keep telling yourself that. It's just a bed kit, and that should be a basic. Many kids don't have parents.
This is a Canadian charity, from the looks of it, and we all know Canadians all have health care. You can give the basics without giving away the whole farm. You still have to go out to work to pay for yourself; it's just easier to do when you've had a decent night's sleep. Good Lord, Ebeneezer.

An excellent cause and reputable charity. This org was founded by the Montreal Canadiens Hockey star goalie Ken Dryden's parents. The whole family has been incredible advocates for children's charities and rights…both in Canada and around the world.

Thanks Perez! I'm a daily reader of your site who lives in Toronto and supports this charity several times a year. I often "give" these bedkits as a gift to people — it's a really cool thing when my kids or friends receive a picture showing a kid that gets to brush their teeth, draw pictures, put on clean clothes and sleep under a mosquito net just because of the donation I've made on their behalf.

I have never seen you ask help for any white people. If you can name ONE black charity (if there is such a thing) I think they only ask for HEP thy never seem to give HEP, even in N.O. it was always whites doing — for a tub load of fat black mammies. Do these people EVER — HEP — Their Lazy Selves?

I come to this site for light fun and Hollywood gossip. I'm annoyed by the Charity cause shit, which is something new everyday and a total downer. Charity has a time and a place and neither is on the Perez site. Lose it Perez, before you start losing fans. Your advertising all over the site these days and it is officially interfering with the fun of the space.

This is a truly wonderful charity. My parents have supported it for the last two decades and now I support it as well. Sleeping somewhere safe, dry and comfortable is a luxury that many of us take for granted. Having a good night's sleep helps to keep us healthy, helps us to learn at school and makes us happier people. By making this one important change in a child's life "Sleeping Children" is doing good around the world. They are able to make sure 100% of donations go straight to the children by having volunteers deliver the donations.
Thank you Perez for letting more people know about this wonderful group!
