Stones Roll to Universal

The Rolling Stones are leaving their long time label, EMI, for the biggest record company in the world, Universal.
Universal said on Friday that the new deal covered both future albums by the Stones and their back catalog, including such classics as Sticky Fingers and Brown Sugar.
Who cares about the new stuff? We think it's the catalog stuff that is a huge score for Universal!
The record compnay did not disclose terms of the deal.
"Universal are forward-thinking, creative and hands-on music people," the Stones said in a statement. "We really look forward to working with them."
This news was no doubt a hard pill for EMI to swallow. It announced plans this year to cut more than one-third of its work force to offset a drop in CD sales revenue and the departure of several major artists, including Paul McCartney.
EMI has reportedly struggled more than the other major labels as digital music downloading has gained in popularity.
Thank God for Katy Perry and Coldplay, or else EMI/Capitol would be FUCKED right now!

Re: F-em! – Why should the Verve get rich from a huge hit off the backs of the great hook that the two Stones WROTE? Money is paid to the WRITERS in the industry, not much to the performers. The Stones may have had big lawyers and all, but a court would look very closely at the musical property to ascertain how much the Stones should get VS. the Verve. A sampling is one thing, but if the whole song is based on something YOU wrote, (and that CAN be determined, more or less) then you might be P.O.'d at someone else filling their pockets when it hit gold, not to mention how you would feel every time you heard it. They should have had direct input from the Stones when it was cut, along with a signed release. It was unfortunate, alright, but as with anything, 'get it on paper.' Mick and the boys were ripped off big time in their early years, and are meticulous about anything encroaching on their property in an obvious way. The Verve are terrific, and I'd bet they've learned to legally cover their asses; a good lesson so they don't lose everything they make in the future. The Verve may have lost the money from that song, but became famous off that hook and song, so what is that worth?

Man, when one artist goes for 100% of the royalties and credit for a song, it's not about feeling that they have been ripped off, it's big industry trying to do a land grab. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. The reports were that The Stones were fine with the song when it was released. Big Business and greed took over once money was to have been made off of it. If this song tanked, there would have been no lawsuit. The song that this sample came from, "The Last Time", actually sucks a bit. This is about the big crushing the small, nothing more. It's not about piracy or encroachment on another's artistic property. THIS WAS ALL ABOUT MONEY.
The raid on The Verva is akin to Martha Walsh singing the backup vocals to "Everybody Dance Now". She agreed to a $400 fee to sing the background, only later to sue saying that her contribution was what made the song a big hit. MARTHA WALSH WAS THE MAIN REASON WHY EDN WAS A BIG HIT. She sued and lost, yet in a London court The Stones filed a similar gripe and not only won, but seized full artistic control of the song.
