Why The Snub???

estele__opt1.jpg

The funeral for Estelle Getty was held yesterday, Thursday, in Los Angeles, which was attended by friends, family and former colleagues.

Noticeably absent, neither of the three remaining Golden Girls attended.

Both Betty White and Bea Arthur live in L.A., while Rue McClanahan is based out of New York City these days.

Why the no show????

Perhaps her family didn't want a media circus and kindly asked the ladies not to come. Estelle's been out of the limelight a number of years due to her declining help and I'm sure her family and friends got used to having her to themselves and didn't want her final farewell filled with opportunistic scum sucking miserable leeching papparazzi.

Maybe they weren't invited? Don't assume that they snubbed her. Who knows?

Have you considered that all of the remaining Golden Girls are elderly and might not have medical clearance to fly?

  14. Erica says – reply to this
    14

Maybe it was just a family event. The poor woman suffered from severe dementia for years before her death, and it's likely that she had no recollection of The Golden Girls at all. It wouldn't surprise me that only those who were closest to her at the time of her death, her family and caregivers, would have attended. Bea, Rue and Betty have probably payed their respects in their own ways.

Re: Lovey – Correction: *Declining health* -
Addition: If the other ladies of the show went to the funeral it would not have been as peaceful a send off because the paps would have swormed the joint to capture the grieving family and "famous" friends….y'all know its true.

  21. Rache says – reply to this
    21

Your grammar is horrible. "Neither of the three"? Neither is for referring to two. None would have been better to use.

  22. fire says – reply to this
    22

There has to be an explanation for this because both Bea and Rue and Betty were very close to her. Maybe it was a closed wake only for immediate family members and the actual burial will take place soon? But still, I would think even they would be allowed into a closed wake. Doesn't make sense. Will be interesting to find out.

  23. jim says – reply to this
    23

You should have written "none of the remaining", not neither. Neither is for a choice of two.

Bad manners, as in not attending the funeral of a friend, can be forgiven.

    Basic grammatical errors…not so much.

Do you keep up with people you worked with 15 or 20 years ago? Do they come to your family events? Not a big deal.

Re: Justi – It's true! Why bring flowers to the grave? By then it's too late. That's why everyone should see, show, and tell those that they love how much they mean to them before they croak.

    27

Why so many threads on this old geezer???

  28. dave says – reply to this
    28

I agree with justi that you need to see people while they're alive, but i think it still shows a little disrespect by none of the others attending. I know one of the others is in poor health (i forgot which one), but the other two could have gone. Rest in peace, Estelle. Memory Eternal!

  29. JUSTI says – reply to this
    29

it's simple, they're old and afraid to be confronted with death.

  30. Pleas says – reply to this
    30

While I do believe they should have been there, we all have to remember these woman are NOT spring chickens! They are all one or two years older or younger than Estelle, putting them in their early-mid 80's. Give the ladies a break I am sure they sent their condolences all the same.

  31. dummy says – reply to this
    31

you keep making news where there is none! I find it laughable that you say "we (yourself) have been working our asses off this week posting" because it's not about quantity, it's about quality (if you want longevity). But, since you are going for just quantity, it makes total sense that you had "all-time high traffic this week" - every person clicks on each post once (as an example), there are no more posts to click on… do the math. The negative comments have increased too and people who are passionately pissed or negative post more often than people who have something interesting to say. Good luck keeping this site up to it's circa 2006 standards for now on…

  32. Rob says – reply to this
    32

My guess would be it was to keep it a quiet ceremony. I think it's rather disgusting of you to suggest that because someone doesn't attend a funeral, it means that they weren't close to the person being buried.

  33. Chris says – reply to this
    33

Why the insinuation?! All three ladies have expressed their love and adoration for her in their own way.
The question is, did you not stop to think that a lot of people who get their age don't do funerals because uh, well, you use your genius to figure that one out.
Also, how do you know if those women are in good health?
And Perez, you don't say neither in a sentence when referring to more than 2. You must have skipped grammar lessons that day…

  34. Madis says – reply to this
    34

It is well known that Estelle Getty's family wanted her out of the limelight after her health degraded. Rumor has it the poor woman was a brainless vegetable for years. The family tried hard to keep the media at bay, and succeeded. I think they wanted her to go with dignity, and without the media present. Bea, Rue and Betty would have attracted press. I am sure they will say goodbye to Estelle in their own respectful ways.

Maybe they were too upset. Sometimes that happens wen you loose someone unexpectedly. MAybe they were not invited, family only. Maybe they didn't want to take the attention away from her as a person and put the focus on the Golden Girls show. There are tons of reasons Perez calling it a snub is a bit harsh

  38. Laure says – reply to this

I am guessing that they weren't invited. It was a private ceremony… I am guessing they didn't want the paparazzi at the funeral…

Rue McClanahan has been sick with cancer for awhile, maybe her health isn't that great right now.
Besides we don't know maybe they did a separate service for her GG cast/crew to keep the funeral low key.

  45. B'Mo says – reply to this

her funeral would have turned into a media circus. and for all we know, her family might not have invited them for that reason. or they chose not to go for that reason. i know they paid their respects in private.

    46

maybe they're not doing well either? Although Estelle's character Sophia was the oldest on the show, I'm pretty sure in real life Estelle was the youngest out of the four women. She wore a white wig on the show afterall!

estelle getty wasnt the youngest. she was the 2nd oldest. rue mcclanahans book suggests estelle had been starting with her dementia while the golden girls were still on air in the 80's she had to use cue cards which pissed off the other 3 but they had been friends but estelle had no idea who anyone was for years.

They may have already been to a private service. Them showing up together could make for a media circus. I'm sure they did not snub their friend. They were all very close.

rue mcclanahan was on the cw11 morning news this week promoting her new show: sordid lives, and she got really peeved when an anchor asked her if she still saw the other golden girls. she was like "why do people think were friends, cuz we're NOT! We all have our own separate lives."

A funeral/wake is not for the dead person, but for those left behind (the living). There are others ways to show your sympathy to the family besides knelling down and saying a prayer over a dead body.

  62. Big M says – reply to this

Perhaps they were not invited because they blabbled about Estelle's condition all over ET for years, especially Rue.

I felt it was in poor taste and not their business to share.

  63. Natal says – reply to this
    63

    Perez,

I know it is your job to stir the pot but can you just find it in your heart to be just a bit respectful. I'm sure all those women are grieving her death in thier own way. Maybe the funeral was for family. You do understand that not every moment is meant to be a photo op or media circus don't you?. I have seen interviews from all three surviving golden girl prior to Estelles death and they spoke of her fondly but the knew she was very much gone already with the dementia. Please don't disrespect those women by implying a snub at a funeral.

I would not attend the funeral of someone I worked with for years if I had not been in contact with them when the work was over and if we weren't truly close friends.

Funerals are for family and very close friends. Perhaps they don't feel like they were close enough with Estelle anymore to attend the funeral? Being a co-worker does not a 'friend' make.

  69. Jay says – reply to this
    69

It isn't a snub nor a disgrace. Both Betty White and Bea Arthur are older than Estelle Getty was (84, almost 85) and while they probably grieved in private, they want us to remember them as Rose and Dorothy, not frail or fragile. Think about it and have a nice cup of shut the *$&% up!
