Bombs Away!

xfiles2_1.jpg

The new X Files movie has debuted disastrously at the U.S. box office!

The movie took in an embarrassing $4 million on Friday.

Ouchie ouch ouch.

The pic is expected to only take in about $10 million for the entire weekend.

How could this have happened????

Meanwhile, The Dark Knight continues to devour the box office.

The film took in another $23.1 on Friday and is expected to make around $73 million this weekend.

The film is on track to beat the record set by Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest , which took in $300 million at the box office in 16 days.

The Dark Knight is expected to do that by day 10!

And, based on their continued strength and repeat business, it is even being mentioned that The Dark Knight could beat Titanic to become the biggest grossing film of all time.

Bananas!

It will do well over the long haul, particularly when it goes to video. X-Files gripped the minds of a generation who are ensconced at home raising children and watching their gas bucks; it will mostly be enjoyed eventually by couples and families noshing on microwave popcorn on their couches. It's art that salutes an ever present and interesting subject matter, and the movie has intrinsic value in and of itself because of that; but I predict it will nevertheless make money over time.

the Christian Bale-Heath Ledger actioner directed by Chris Nolan is also well on its way to making $300M in just 10 days, the fastest ever (beating Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest which did it is 16 days). All anybody can do at the studios is keep repeating the word, "Amazing".

      35

The production budget is said the be $35 million, so if that's the case, this movie will show some nice revenue. It doesn't have to be a blockbuster; it just has to show a nice little profit to be worth the effort and keep the series alive for those who love it.

    36. 36

They should not have taken out the seen where Mulder is going down on Scully and she squirts a gallon of Gilly Juice into his face. Kind of like what happened to his buddy on Californication.

im pretty sure the x files movie didnt do too well because:

      a. the trailer wasnt shown until about a month before it came out.
      b. the show ended too long ago to pick back up successfully.

i went to see it as soon as it came out and i thought it was good. not great…but good. gillian anderson and david duchovny did a good job acting as scully and mulder-as always. i just think that there wasnt enough passion between them. it seemed like the actual episodes trumped the movie. it could've been made better but i liked it all the same. im sure there will be plenty of x files nerds who will go to see it.

    48. JJJ says – reply to this

      48

The movie was under-promoted and pretty much turned out to be an ill-written piece of work that was not worth paying to see. Chris Carter has somehow morphed the franchise from being a cult show with great writing, to being a laughable franchise with bad one liners and over-used "X File" cliches.

The X-Files movie is going to be one of those films that people will rent on a dull friday night. I was a HUGE fan of the show in the 90's but along the way, the show lost it's mystique. The X-Files movie coming out right now just seems so awkward. It is 2008 and the relevance is lost on audiences.

Gillian is a great actress and I'm sad she doesn't work more. I can't believe she has never been approached for her own show. There are all these female driven series's now and it would be great to see her work again. I cannot say the same about David Duchovony. He was impressive as Mulder but I've never seen him in a compelling role outside of the X-Files. Never.

And The Dark Knight is a masterpiece of superhero action movies. It deserves to beat Titanic as the highest grossing film ever. No offense to James Cameron but Chris Nolan is the shit. His movies are never boring even when the end result is not so perfect. We need new icons in film making.

I heard that 50% of fans of the former show have not turned out for the film.

Its easy to explain why this bombed

      1) The last 3 seasons of the show sucked

      2) Weak Story

      3) Pandering/Catering to the romance fans, or Mulder/Scully relationshippers.

When you make a film you are supposed to make for all aspects of the audience and not one segment. LOL

I'm just wondering… all of you who are bashing David Duchovny, have you actually ever seen him in anything else? Anyone who's seen "Californication" can tell you exactly why he won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Hank Moody. Come on, you can't say he was awesome as Mulder but sucked everywhere else because you're just comparing whatever character he's playing to Mulder. Duchovny's great in just about anything. Who else could steal an entire movie during a three minute stint as a former hand model?
