Boy ends up at Hooters after slipping out of day care

Investigators are looking into how a young boy managed to slip out of a Denton day care center unnoticed, then cross two busy roads and end up a half-mile away at a Hooters restaurant on Tuesday afternoon.

The five-year-old boy walked out of the Imagination Station child care center in the 2300 block of San Jacinto Boulevard near Golden Triangle Mall.

He then crossed busy Dallas Drive to go to a RaceTrac gas station to purchase a soft drink and snacks.

After leaving the station, he ended up in the Hooters parking lot about a half-mile away.

The restaurant's general manager Brian Mason and his employees spotted the child shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"I was pretty impressed that he made it that way without getting hurt," Mason said. "He let us know that he looked both ways before crossing the road, stopped in the middle and then crossed again."

With no chaperone for the boy in sight, Mason called police.

"We kept him in the back coloring and kept him pretty occupied until the police showed up," he said.

Deborah Pugh, the day care owner, said the boy had asked to go to the bathroom before he disappeared. When his father arrived minutes later to pick up the child, workers said they realized the boy was missing.

Pugh said she believes he got out through a fire exit, which, by law, must remain unlocked.

"We are looking into the timeline," said Denton police spokesman Jim Bryan, "but I think the greater concern is the distance that this child went and the timeframe that he was not in the day care."

Despite what happened, some parents told News 8 they still trust the Imagination Station.

"She [Pugh] is a caring woman and I like how she takes the children," said Grace Shotayo, one of the parents. "She really cares for them."

Imagination Station is subject to state inspection every three to five months. According to records, the day care has been cited for at least eight violations since 2006. Two of the citations were for improper supervision; the most recent one was issued in April.

Pugh said this is the first time a child has disappeared while in her care since she opened Imagination Station 13 years ago. She said she plans to install an alarm at the emergency exit, and is now escorting all children to the bathroom.

The five-year-old has not been back to the day care since the incident.

State child care licensing workers and police investigators are looking into the case to determine whether they will take action against the center and its owner.

      So I live in Denton and this boy was VERY lucky, he crossed a INSANELY busy service road off the interstate.

      That daycare has been fined so many times and it horrible.

      He didn't go to hooters, the manager just found him wandering in the parking lot with his drink and candy he bought at the gas station behind it.

      Shut the daycare down! This isn't "cool" of the little kid, it's extremely negligent and dangerous of the daycare provider. These are children! They need to be supervised at all times.

      I live in Denton as well and this kid is very lucky to be alive. Where the Race Trac is and where Hooters is in relation to this day care center, the kid had to cross Dallas Drive which I'm assuming everyone is thinking is just a normal street, it's not. Dallas Drive is the entrance/exit ramp for I35E. Anyways, the kid is very lucky to be alive and while the problem isn't the kid, it's the day care center and the state. The state has had to been at this day care three to five times already and I know for a fact that there are several complaints still being handled that haven't been investigated yet. It was the state's responsibility to handle this before something like this happened. Yes, the day care should be held responsible but what is it saying when we can't trust the state to uphold the laws they create to protect us?

      OBVIOUSLY no one that comes to this site is a parent because this is NOT cool. The mere fact that parents still trust this place is pathetic and they are bad parents. MANY times that child could have been killed, he probably didnt know it was a hooters, he just walked in or may be was even taken in there. Ok so the people at the day care say he was going to the bathroom….what 5 year old do you know takes like an hour to pee??? Sorry but if this child was anything near 1/2 mile or a mile away then it took a while, children walk slowly.

      I know now why people hate this site….stupid people who respond to this pictures and articles and have NO idea what the article is really about…they just care that the kid went to the hooters.

      I actually live in Denton, TX and know the woman through a business transaction. She requested a service that most day care owners would never ever care about. Anyways, I have no doubt that this was a huge accident. It could have happened to anyone. Especially if your hired help didn't show up for the day. You never know…I feel awful for her.

      My friend is an investigator on this case. He didn't buy the snacks. He stole a root beer and two packs of gum. When they asked him why he left the day care, he said because he was thirsty!! The teacher didn't even realize he was gone…the parents came to pick him up and she was like ohh yeah he went to the bath room 15 minutes ago!!

      The thing that really upsets me is the fact that everyone is worried about where the child got the money but no one is worried why a store clerk would sell items to a five year old without asking where a guardian was. The store clerk should've called the police when they saw that the five year old was alone and paying for his own things. and for you people that say he is stupid it sounds like you all are in the same boat as him (child)

      I'm from Denton, and the hooters in Denton is off of the most busy road, and he had to cross I-35 to get there as well. It's THE busiest road in Denton.
