NBC News announced Monday that Mark Whitaker will replace the recently deceased Tim Russert as the Peacock network's Washington bureau chief.

Whitaker is a former Newsweek editor who joined the news division as its No. 2 executive last year.

"Mark's got all of the components that will assure his success — a commitment to journalistic integrity, political savvy, a keen eye for the future, and a management style that is inclusive and fair," NBC News President Steve Capus said in a statement. "He is exactly what the bureau needs."

A Meet the Press replacement anchor is yet to be named. As previously reported, the legendary Tom Brokow is filling in ’til the end of election season.

      I love Lester Holt but he is nowhere near being in the league of replacing Tim Russert on MTP. I don't think anybody can truly replace Tim Russert. They will find another anchor but definately not somebody that co-hosts morning shows. The person will need to have a bit more political savy and a law background would be helpful too.Lester's a sweetie though! :)

      First of all, "hiring gays"? I know Mark's wife and two kids. Yes, he is half black, and he's been kept out of the public eye before prior to this, the man was the editor in chief of Newsweek. Tim Russert was a fantastic journalist and will be sorely missed, but If anyone is qualified for the job, Mark is, and I wish him the best of luck in this and all future endeavors.
