California has now become the first state in the US to entirely ban food retailers and restaurants from using trans-fat.
Some cities, like New York City and Philadelphia have already banned trans fats.
Cuz it's bad for you, bbs.
Trans-fats are partially hydrogenated vegetable oils that are used to extend the shelf life of products and can turn oily foods into semi-solid foods. They're used for frying and usually put into cakes, pastries, hot chocolate drink mixes, processed foods, margarines, and some fast foods.
They've been linked to coronary heart disease, can raise levels of bad cholesterol, have no nutritional benefit, and even a small reduction in consumption can cut heart disease.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said the legislation will represent a "strong step toward creating a healthier future." The new legislation will take effect in 2010.
Schwarzenegger will ban the use of trans-fats in oil, shortening and margarine used in spreads or for frying.
And those found of violating the new law will be fined between $25 and $1,000.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Americans eat on average about 4.7lbs of trans-fats each year.
A 2006 review by the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that by eliminating artificial trans-fats from your food supply could prevent between 6 and 19% of heart attacks and related deaths each year.

I thought McDonald's had already switched over to non trans fat fries. Wendy's has. KFC too. Just because it's trans fat free doesn't mean it's OK for you. There's still saturated fat to worry about.

There are a number of fast food joints that have no transfats in their fries already. In Canada Wendy's I think was one of the first to do this- and they actually taste even better! So- YES fried food is bad for us, but if you're gonna eat it, try to be a little healthier about it.

Canada switched over long ago. Things taste just as good; even McDonalds fries. Don't sweat it. Canola oil does justice, without the trans fat. It's been a good thing.

I believe McDonald's switch their oil to non trans fat. They been slowly changing it in their stores without any announcements so you wouldn't know the difference.

They're not telling you how many of what to eat, and you can fry in bacon fat at home all you want; but cooking with canola could add 10 to 20 years to yours and your children's lives. I get it… trans fats are bad for you, but I would like to make that decision on my own. I do not need the effing government telling me what I can and cannot eat. It starts here with the best intentions, but where does it end?? Bad bad government. Are they saying we're too stupid to make these decisions for ourselves??? That's an insult. Plus, most restaurants do not use trans fats anyways. They need to concentrate on fixing our budget,and not on regulating what we can and cannot eat.

McDonalds started phasing in trans fat free oils a year and a half ago! Most of their locations are already using the new oils (even in Kentucky of all places)!

FIRST of all, McDonalds has already removed trans-fat from their menu over a year ago! And second, not only has trans-fat oils been link to diseases, the process that they are made it are made to preserve by being packed with metals, that is why is last so long, it was created during WWII for the soldiers but never meant for mass production.

We already have the trans fat free fries in Canada, there is hardly a difference.
The fries will taste better without trans fats. Natural fats, like butter and olive oil taste much, much better than trans fats like margarine.
Canada (as well as many European countries) has already passed a law forbidding the use of trans fat in any food. They have to be phased out by the end of 2008, but most of it is already gone. (The companies used the "No Trans Fat!" line to sell more product and show how they "cared about their customers' health")
