No Olympic Repeat: Hamm's Dream Shattered!

Sooooooo close to the medals, yet so far away.
Unfortunately for gymnast Paul Hamm, his dreams of making it to the Olympics to defend his all-around men's gymnastics title have vanished.
After making such a quick comeback from the broken bone in his hand, Hamm has had to drop out, he announced Monday.
One of the team's three alternates will take his spot in the squad.
In a statement, Hamm said, “I have put my heart and soul into my comeback and done everything I could to get ready in time to compete in Beijing. After returning home from the preparation camp, I had a few physical setbacks, and it became clear to me that my physical preparations would not be sufficient to properly represent the United States and contribute to the teams efforts to win a medal.”
We give him credit. At least his team will have a better chance of winning this way.
Miles Avery, Hamm's coach, says “Two weeks ago, he was great, he was awesome and did everything he needed to do to be at the Olympics. But I was saying all along that he needed to rest. But he pushed it.”
Hamm broke the fourth metacarpal in his right hand back in May. As a result, he needed surgery and had a plate and nine screws inserted.
Ouch!

A few weeks ago I saw him and his brother at the local Hoggys in Columbus, OH. They were pretty much keeping to themselves. I tried to take a picture since we obviously have no other celebs here. Our waitress said he was a bad tipper.

Kyle Shoefelt of Canada hopes to defend his gold medal on floor ex in Beijing and he shattered BOTH of his legs less than a year ago. How is it Paul only broke a hand bone and can't compete.
One thing I will say is Kyle took the advice of his coaches and doctors VERY seriously and did not push his body past it's limits. You have to listen to the sage advice of those who have your best interests at heart. He didn't even compete at nationals because he didn't want to push it. Perhaps there's some arrogance at play here on Paul's part. When dealing with serious medical issues you do as you're told by doctors etc.

and if you knew anything about the team and his situation you would know that he would be good enough to compete on at least 4 events that would contribute to the team considerably. he was heard at olympic trials saying that if he couldn't win the all around gold in beijing he didn't want to compete at the olympics. it was all about PAUL and NOT team USA.
