An Open Request to Shia LaBeouf
from Mothers Against Drunk Driving

To protect the safety of his family and the citizens of his community, Mothers Against Drunk Driving calls on Shia LaBeouf to voluntarily install ignition interlock devices on all vehicles registered in his name, in addition to completing the official punishment/sanctions that may be levied in the event of his conviction for DUI.

An ignition interlock is a breath test device linked to a vehicle’s ignition system and is normally mandated to convicted drunk drivers as a condition of probation. We hope Mr. LaBeouf will voluntarily use the opportunity of his DUI arrest to educate his fans – and the country – about this life-saving device by installing the device on his vehicles.

Ignition interlocks are proven effective tool in the fight to eliminate drunk driving and save lives.

· Ignition interlocks reduce drunk driving offenses by an average of 65 percent.

· Ignition interlocks have the potential to save more than 4,000 lives now taken in repeat drunk driving crashes annually.

· A majority of American citizens (65 percent) support the use of ignition interlocks as a sanction for first-time convicted drunk drivers.

· A full 85 percent support ignition interlocks for repeat offenders.

States across the nation are turning to the alcohol ignition interlock to help prevent drunk driving tragedies. Just this year, four states – Washington, Nebraska, Alaska and Colorado – expanded the use of alcohol ignition interlocks to include all convicted drunk drivers. MADD lobbied the California state legislature this year to pass similar legislation and plans to make the expanded use of interlocks in California its top priority next year.

MADD believes the tools are now at hand to eliminate drunk driving from the United States. The Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, launched in November 2006, has four elements: intensive, high-visibility law enforcement, full implementation of alcohol ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers, development of advanced vehicle technologies to prevent drunk driving and grassroots support led by MADD and its 400+ affiliates, to make the elimination of drunk driving a reality.

Re: Bree – Bree, you're right that the other driver was cited, as she was found to have run the red light. But this does NOT mean that Shia was not guilty of DUI - that is separate from responsibility for causing the collision. The main thing it means for Shia is that he will not get sued in civil court. But the DUI is still there.

everyone here acts like MADD should mind there business but the truth is someone could have gotten killed in the process. No one in this thread would be talking shit if someine they new was a victim of a drunk driver……it doesn't matter if it wasnt his fault…..point is…he was driving while intoxicated…..People need to grow up and realize that this should not be taken lightly and apreciate the fact that there are groups out there trying to deter people from driving drunk.

drinking is celebrated in the US, happy hour, new years eve, weddings etc while people who smoke are shunned at every level. you can't smoke at the ballgame but you can drink as much as you like and then drive home. Drunk driving kills others, drunks destroy families, jobs etc while smoking does non of that–go figure. When was the last time someone left a bar who had just smoked 10 cigs and killed someone with their car? MADD needs a new PR team.

    56. Britt says – reply to this

      56

part of this doesnt make sense to me…

i mean, why make them get it AFTER they get convicted. why cant this ignition lock already come on all cars. why wait AFTER the death of someone. it doesnt make any sense as to why a life saving device is only being used AFTER something bad happens.

and another thing, i think Shia is getting a really bad rap for this. the driver that hit him ran the red light…so the alcohol wasnt even to blame in shia's case…that doesnt mean it should be looked over but im just saying, the person that ran the red light should be getting some kind of ticket too.

the whole situation is bad :-\ but if MADD really wants to make a difference, they would make it some kind of law for all cars to come standard w/ the ignition lock.

    57. Mikki says – reply to this

      57

Why haven't they asked other stars that have proven to be habiutal drunk drivers like, Paris Hilton, LIndsey Lohan, etc. to do that as well. I think it is a little unfair to single one person out. MADD if you request it of one you should requests it of all.

i'm all for people not drinking and driving, but don't do an open letter to this guy. first off, he was not "drunk" - yes, he had some drinks, but not legally drunk. he was "released on a summons" under suspicion for DUI - again, I dont' condone someone being totally fucked up and being an asshole w/driving, but don't use this guy as a whipping boy

      65

I would take this more seriously were it not for the fact that in the past decade there were two separate incidents involving presidents of M.A.D.D. that were pulled over and subsequently convicted of D.U.I. in Texas. Both were grossly over the legal limit in the state of Texas. These "soccer moms" started with good intentions but are very hypocritical when it comes to practicing what one preaches. These "soccer moms" push for harsher D.U.I. convictions but give the perception that these good deeds and intentions give them a blank check to act as they feel. Again, this is only a perception, but it is there. Did these presidents of M.A.D.D. voluntarily put alcohol ignition interlocks on their own vehicles? Google to find out.

Re: Britt – You're right - the other driver DID get ticketed. She and her insurance company will bear financial responsibility (Shia's insurace company will probably go after her to get reimbursed for Shia's bill at Cedars-Siani). The only legal question is whether Shia's diminished capacity, due to being drunk, caused him to be unable to apply brakes in time to avoid the collision. And as pointed out earlier, the DUI is completely separate from the accident.

      Re: marle

you're absolutely right, someone could have got killed. people who run red lights cause accidents that kill people. not every person who runs a red light is going to kill someone, they might just injure someone, or they may just get away with it.

what is unfortunate is that not all drunk drivers kill people or even cause accidents. what is unfortunate is the way drunk driving laws are written, a person can't have ONE drink within an 1-2 hours before they drive a car for fear one of those faulty little breathilizers will say they are legally drunk.

what is unfortunate is MADD was started with true concern and a true cause, and as evidenced by their famewhoring press release, they're just another political famewhoring machine.

      too bad.

never heard of a ignition interlock device. but if they have it out they should put it in all newer vehicles and they should make all celebrities put them in the cars because if they had it in their cars there wouldn't be a new celebrity dui every week. cause i am sick in tired of celebs getting a dui. i even think clubs and bars need to start giving them a breath test to see what there bac is and not have them drive just call a taxi for them.

      78

MADD takes advantage of their emotional peril to thwart reasonable methods of deterring drunk driving. Driving checkpoints? Unconstitutional to be sure, but the forever-in-mourning mothers have succeeded in allowing this "throw a big fishing net over society" tactic to be instilled by law enforcement, which of course is a nuisance to law abiding citizens and represents just the sort of slippery slope that jeopardizes the tenets of small government law enforcement.

I hereby issue a thank you to fathers of drunk driving victims for not being attention whores that anoint themselves worthy of dictating regulations for the general population. Nothing against women, but it is prudent to oppose groups of any gender, race, creed, etc. that abandon logic and reason in a (futile) emotionally-charged quest to "change the world." See also, National Organization of Women.

All these people that are saying crap about MADD you guys can go to hell. My sister (who was 7 months pregnant) was killed by a drunk driver who ran a red light going 80 MPH. The guy that had killled her was convicted 3 times of previous DUI's. If had the interlock on his car, he would have not been driving. I can't wait until these people that are saying crap is affected by a drunk driver.

It's about time MADD spoke up. They were not vocal during the whole Paris Hilton DUI debacle.

What hypocrisy in this country. It is alcohol that's responsible for driving fatalities, domestic violence, etc etc, yet it is available everywhere. But everyone waaaaay overreacts about prescription drugs which don't make people drive and kill, act violent, etc. One dumb celeb abuses pills and people go nuts. The people who genuinely need RX drugs for medical reasons are treated like criminals and can't get it. It is absurd. But when dumb celebs abuse booze, which is what truly jeopardizes others, no one cracks down on booze.

    93. aliso says – reply to this

      93

well as someone who recently got a DUI in one of the states listed, i did not have to get the interlock installed on my car… so they should double check the facts before sending an open letter like this. and to the people saying you can just get a sober person to blow on it for you, you are wrong, it continually has you blow on it as you drive… and if you got a DUI, why risk getting another one?

i was not drunk at the time, i blew a .09 and was charged. BUT, when all is said and done (lawyer, court fees and fines, alcohol ed classes) a cab would have cost me $10 vs about $1000. he surely can afford a driver or cab.

I'm not surprised at all the ignorant people who are saying that MADD needs to mind their own business. I lost a cousin at 12 because a drunk driver came up on the sidewalk and hit her. And this was back in the 70s before there was an organization like MADD. I would hope that no one that is writing this nonsense ends up losing someone they love because an idiot didn't have the sense to call a cab for a ride home.

yeah, MADD does need a better PR team.

but seriously do the effing research. MADD isn't just mothers; the current president is an african-american male. MADD isn't against drinking. and MADD is trying to save lives, not screw up yours.
