A Message To Shia, From M.A.D.D.

An Open Request to Shia LaBeouf
from Mothers Against Drunk Driving

To protect the safety of his family and the citizens of his community, Mothers Against Drunk Driving calls on Shia LaBeouf to voluntarily install ignition interlock devices on all vehicles registered in his name, in addition to completing the official punishment/sanctions that may be levied in the event of his conviction for DUI.

An ignition interlock is a breath test device linked to a vehicle’s ignition system and is normally mandated to convicted drunk drivers as a condition of probation. We hope Mr. LaBeouf will voluntarily use the opportunity of his DUI arrest to educate his fans – and the country – about this life-saving device by installing the device on his vehicles.

Ignition interlocks are proven effective tool in the fight to eliminate drunk driving and save lives.

· Ignition interlocks reduce drunk driving offenses by an average of 65 percent.

· Ignition interlocks have the potential to save more than 4,000 lives now taken in repeat drunk driving crashes annually.

· A majority of American citizens (65 percent) support the use of ignition interlocks as a sanction for first-time convicted drunk drivers.

· A full 85 percent support ignition interlocks for repeat offenders.

States across the nation are turning to the alcohol ignition interlock to help prevent drunk driving tragedies. Just this year, four states – Washington, Nebraska, Alaska and Colorado – expanded the use of alcohol ignition interlocks to include all convicted drunk drivers. MADD lobbied the California state legislature this year to pass similar legislation and plans to make the expanded use of interlocks in California its top priority next year.

MADD believes the tools are now at hand to eliminate drunk driving from the United States. The Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, launched in November 2006, has four elements: intensive, high-visibility law enforcement, full implementation of alcohol ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers, development of advanced vehicle technologies to prevent drunk driving and grassroots support led by MADD and its 400+ affiliates, to make the elimination of drunk driving a reality.

I'm sorry but you are wrong– new technology will not let your car start with whatever your judge defines. Most are set to .08

LA_RE: Your point was kind of the point of my original post. People that try to set and enforce the rules/laws should act according to those rules/laws. M.A.D.D. started off as something that was meant to be a means of bringing attention to D.U.I.s and help reduce D.U.I.-related deaths. At this point they've become a caricature of their former selves to the point that the organization is both sad and funny. This article is a prime example of this. Why pinpoint Shia? There are plenty of celebs to go after. How about all the sports stars that get in trouble with D.U.I.s?

Thoma: I've known quite a few people to die from being hit by a drunk driver. I've also known quite a few to die from drunk driving. I challenge you to consider that most people you know have probably driven when they weren't supposed to because of too much alcohol consumption. It's quite possible that even you have driven when you weren't supposed to be behind a wheel, too. Most drunk individuals can't always gauge how much alcohol they've consumed. That being said, drunk driving is a sad, dangerous activity. That doesn't absolve M.A.D.D. of making public statements like the one above for the sole reason of seeming relevant in today's culture. Their letter almost comes across as an easy way to force Shia into being their new poster boy for the evils of drunk driving.

      Just a thought…..
Though MADD supported us when we went to the CA state Capital to lobby to get AB 3045 "Adam's Law" approved… They are not the creators of this bill. It was named after Adam Williams in Galt, CA who was killed by a DUI driver on 04-21-03. I'm not trying to be rude, but MADD WAS NOT in the hearings asking the senators and appropriations committee to pass these bills. My husband was there in tears asking for justice for his son Adam. They were only supporters to this bill. I appreciate MADD and their letter to Shia, but I feel they are going to far…….. It reminds me of PETA.

    10. AB 30 says – reply to this

      110

One more thing….. Look up AB 3045 "Adam's Law." This is an interlock device driving law in affect in CA. It was signed into law in 2007 by Gov. Arnie. It just takes time for the law to come into reality. I'm not against MADD. I'm just pissed that people like Paris and Lindsay did not get MADD's attention before SHIA. MADD is supposed to be about educating the public and youth about the horror of DUI related crashes and death. That stupid message to SHIA they wrote makes me want to vomit. Friggin liberal famewhore hippies!!!!!!

This "law" is frivilous, stupid and a violation of our human rights. Next are they going to start installing cameras in our homes "just in case" we break the law? I know you lost your family member to a DD, and in no way am I condoning that- but this won't bring them back. People will find a way around it, and it's going to cost us taxpayers A LOT of money. Be smarter America.

I agree. All cars should be installed with the ignition interlocks.
Birthday party? Drink two-three drinks. Blood alcohol over .O8.
New Years Eve? Drink two-three drinks. Blood alcohol over .08
Frat/sorority party? Labor Day Party? Wedding Party? Bacholerette Party? Religious party? Halloween Party? Victory party? Hot tub party? Happy hour party? I lost my job party? I got a new job party? It's a boy party? Superbowl party? Turning 21 years old party? July 4th party?

I mean come on….do you know how many people are drinking out there and just don't get caught.

What we in L.A. should be asking is why dont more buses and trains run til 3AM (and why in such a wealthy city is there not money for this)? If law enforcement wants to crack down on DUI drivers, give us all affordable options for getting home besides cabs. Not to mention restaurant and bar workers. It would be such a safer environment if this was available. MADD should really spend some of their angry energy on these kinds of sensible solutions. My sister was killed by a drunk driver many years ago and while I think drunk drivers are an abomination, I also dont agree with MADD's plan to create what amounts to a police state. Just their name turns me off.

    18. Aaron says – reply to this

      118

I find MADD to be such a fucking annoying group. I totally think drunk driving is a terrible thing to do but MADD isn't the solution. "Dear MADD… why don't you wait for the fucking facts to come out before you convict someone in the press? As far as I know everyone still has the benefit of being innocent until proven guilty. I think you nosy bitches jumped the gun a little."

    19. 119

Lol… if they are asking him to put that device in his cars it can't be voluntary… anyways I am hoping that after that accident he learned something!!!

    20. HEath says – reply to this

      120

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard…

It wasn't even his fault. Why is this such a big deal?

      121

Oh, f*ck MADD - the results aren't even in as to whether or not he was intoxicated and they're exploiting this to the max. I appreciate the need to get drunk drivers off the road but this is RIDICULOUS. If MADD wants to eliminate drunk driving, then they should be using all their money to lobby for better public transportation options for people, especially in cities like Los Angeles. Ignition locks have a purpose but exploiting Shia LaBoeuf isn't one of them.

Re: ala – What the f*ck was your kid doing out in the middle of the night??? Maybe if you were keeping a better eye on him, he wouldn't have been in the path of a drunk driver. Drunk drivers are a menace but MADD goes about this all wrong. Get the facts before you judge, too.

    23. kc says – reply to this

      123

Ok, i agree with MADD but heres a concept why isnt every car equipt with this it would save more lives. lets not single anyone out especially when he's innocent until proven guilty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: marle – I wonder how many times you drove drunk? Even buzzed is drunk driving…according to the commercials on TV. TO EVERYONE, DON'T JUDGE LESS YE BE JUDGED! To MADD, the breath thing is a good idea, but I would blow in that thing if Shia asked me too. The truth is people that are sober will blow in those things for other people. Period!

These people at MADD are once again going to the extreme with their fanatic organization. The guy has not been convicted of anything at the moment! What happened to "innocent until proven guilty?!?!?" This is still America isn't it? Funny how reports are now coming out that the accident was not his fault. This guy deserves a public apology from MADD!

i'M going to take a lot of hits for this one, but — I truly blame MADD for teenagers/young adults NOT having a concept of "moderate" drinking. its the same when the speed limit for an area is ridiculous low — EVERYONE goes above the speed limit.
      -
      -
What MADD did was create a situation of disbelief - by being so ridiculous stringent in their demands, they are now ignored. I damn well know that I can drink one beer and be a better driver than a monther with a pack of rowdy kids in the back of her car, who keeps turning around to reprimand them and nearly running off the road. Take that, you MADD rejects.

To everyone who is angry at all of the "soccer moms" of M.A.D.D: It isn't just mothers. Haven't you read their slogan? "We're dads and daughters, sons and uncles, friends and neighbors, and mothers. We come from all walks of life. We are many colors with one voice." I think that covers EVERYONE, not just mothers, if you ask me.

And also, to everyone who says, "who cares if he was drunk!" etc… Are you joking? Just wait until someone you know dies in a drunk driving crash (it's a crash because driving drunk isn't an accident). Then come back here and see what M.A.D.D is trying to say.

M.A.D.D is a great organization- if you don't agree with their actions, that's fine, but I cannot condone you writing horrible things about an organization that helps families and looks out for YOUR safety.

Maybe these fucking idiots at MADD should wait until he is actually CONVICTED OF A CRIME before they start spewing their self-righteous bullshit.

    37. 137

THIS is RIDICULOUS! He is a FIRST TIME OFFENDER, right? Why the hell should he have to put a device in his car, when NO ONE ELSE IS REQUIRED TO?? I have been 22 and made mistakes, heaven forbid HE make one! (YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TOO)

    38. 138

      P.S. J sucks!
