A Worthwhile Cause

CLICK HERE to read up on and donate to a very worthwhile cause.

"Unlike many charities that do many different things, The Smile Train is focused on solving a single problem: cleft lip and palate.

Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. Aren’t allowed to attend school or hold a job. And face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.

The good news is every single child with a cleft can be helped with surgery that costs as little as $250 and takes as little as 45 minutes.

This is our mission:
-To provide free cleft surgery for millions of poor children in developing countries.
-To provide free cleft-related training for doctors and medical professionals.

Until there are no more children who need help and we have completely
eradicated the problem of clefts."

I am not apathetic to the plight of these kids but am so shocked by these photos that I tune out. I turn the page and move on. I understand that it's a horrific affliction, but these pictures are too gross. They need to rethink their campaign.

You know. why send money to different countries when we have the same issue here. I was born with a cleft lip and no one helped my family out. And I was born here in the US.

    omg this is so thoughtful.

when i was in thailand, i was watching movies in my hotel room and one of the movies was called "smile" which is basically about two girls, the same age, but one with cleft pallet in china and the other just a regular teenager in california.

i didnt get to watch the rest of the movie b/c we had to go out, but from what i DID see, it had a really good message and i think that's great that you too are trying to convey that message. if you want, you should watch "smile."

this is an awesome organization. my daughter was born with a cleft palate and let me just tell you from first hand experience, these poor babies need the repair surgeries in order to live. she had to eat through a feeding tube placed in her belly from the time she was born until a few months after the palate repair surgery was done - I can't imagine what those mothers go through, trying to keep their babies sustained and hoping for a miracle……

I was born with a cleft lip. My father was born with the double cleft lip and cleft palate. Why do Americans send their money to other countries instead of helping their own? Yes we have the insurance to do it but it seems like we care about helping other countries but when things happen to us they don't care.

Doork you are so clueless and pathetic. I understand these kids arent "perfect" like society says it should be. This hits home to me because my son was born with a cleft lip and palate. I am hispanic in my early thirties and this does not run in mine or my husbands family. Its a really difficult thing to go through but my sons lip and palate have been repaired and he is 14 months old now. He is behind on his speech but eats a ton and drinks alot too. I think people need to think before they comment about something that is more common then you think. My son was and still is beautiful to me and I love him all the same.

This, as well as Operation Smile, are wonderful organizations that both my husband and I are active donors to. Our son was born cleft palate, and wtih the amazing work of our Dr. he is doing amazing. He also does work oversees as a visiting Dr., 'pro-bono' to assist — give to this group people, it's so important and all too often overlooked.

How do you think we could eradicate a birth defect, Perez. I agree these children need help, there are a lot of children here in the states that need the same help too. I don't know why we as Americans think we have to help everyone else. Isn't an act of random kindness helping anyone, not just those in poorer countries? I'm not saying that we need to help our country FIRST, we just need to help — period!

dooork…..you fit your name. How can you be so naive and vain. Gross? What's gross is your ignorance to a birth defect. Do you think these babies wanted to be born this way??? Trying pullin your head out of your ass and donate some money to these worthy organization, or better yet, try donating your time to those organization that help the less fortunate and not make fun of them. That's why our society is the way it is today and people glamourize the beautiful people. Just because your beautiful on the outside doesn't make you beautiful on the inside. Even with these birth defects, you and the rest of the ignorant people in the world, can never be more beautiful than these babies.

I'm shocked at the responses to this ad. Imagine expecting a healthy baby and having 2 c your baby with a hole in her face! People, please be sensitive to the many mothers and children living with this condition.
Luckily, in the U.S. we have resources that help babies born here get surgery. I support this organization because it helps the babies that don't have a chance of getting surgery in their own country.

I've been donating to this charity for years. My mother was born w/a cleft palate and lip. Thank you Perez for spreading the word. These children need every chance they can get.

For the people that are "shocked" or "appalled" by the images, I'm sad for you. That ignorance and simple-mindedness is why these children are shunned from society. Shame on you.

  29. NN says – reply to this

    29

Also, cleft palates and lips are mainly caused by a Vitamin K deficiency in the mother. That's why it's so rare in the US anymore.

    The other reason is hereditary.

I mean why rethink the campaign when these pics are of kids who besides having an unusual "deformity" are like everyone else is…u shouldnt shy or turn away because you think tis gross they are trying to send a message to help them…my bro has gone through alot even with some surgery and he is still set apart..they deserve to be helped

Perez you're a beautiful person babe. I'm totally donating to this charity - actually i think i'm gonna set up a direct debit so i'm donating to them straight out of my pay every month. I was born with a cleft lip and it has been repaired sooooo well. Every doctor and surgeon i've seen says its the best repair they've ever seen. Luckily I live here in the UK so it was done for free and is brill. I had the (hopefully) last surgery last week and everything is going so well that i've been thinking about donating to a cleft lip charity to sort of spread out the karma a little bit.

I've seen adverts for SmileTrain a few times since I started thinking about donating to a cleft charity and i'd never seen them advertised before - and now seeing them here has totally made my mind up, I get the hint, I'm taking the sign and i'm gonna call my bank and set up the direct debit now.

Love you so much Perez! xxxxx

Thank you for mentioning this cause, i have a 13 year old sister that was born with a cleft lip and palate. It was very difficult for us since we were from a small town, and yes we have Insurance that paid and is still paying for all the surgeries that she is STILL going through. Its sad to see that there are SO many insensitive people out there and im sure they are unhappy and miserable. i dont even BOTHER reading all their negative comments. I just pray that no one has to go through this in order to feel a little tug at the heart. I just know that helping another country with this issue is MUCH cheaper than here since in other countries they just do ONE surgery to help and here they go through more reconstructive surgeries. To everyone that opens their HEART and helps another….GOD BLESS YOU.

Perez..one thing you didn't mention is that Smile Train uses 100% of the money donated to do the surgeries. My father is a plastic surgeon in Orange County, CA. Let me tell you that in "The OC" he is one of a FEW surgeons who elect or have the skill to repair patients who are born with this type of illness. Many of the plastics, opt to do more cosmetic surgery then reconstructive surgery. Currently my dad is the only plastic surgeon for the craniofacial panel at CHOC hospital in Orange, CA. It's sad that in "the OC" there are not that many surgeons who can put a smile on these patients face. In today's day and age the money for a breast aug out weighs a child born like this. Many younger plastic surgeons would rather give an 18yr old a rack, rather then reconstruct a child's face. You all can argue all you want about what charity to donate too, but I just wanted to say cleft lip and palates is a serious issue in any country.

    Re: Laura
I agree with you, my daughter was born with a bilateral complete cleft lip and palate, and I have been brainstorming with my husband about what we can do to help her and all of the other children in the US with Cleft lip and palate out a little bit. I know our daughter is self concious with her scars, so we were thinking of finding a few local makeup artists so the girls who were born with cleft lip could learn on how to hide the scars, men have it easy cus they can just grow a stach!
As for the people who think cleft lip and palate is gross, it is people like you that make these children depressed and not look forward to school. Grow up and stop being bitches and assholes, all children are beautiful, inside and out, and they cannot help that they were born with a birth defect, it is no ones fault, it is usually just a glitch in the womb!

Re: Marib – as someone who has gone through more surgeries than you can count on your hand, much like your daughter is and will, it is the best thing you can do. not because it makes her look better, but because your daughter will know you worked hard to make her look normal and take any pain (from the negative commenters) away. knowing that my parents cared enough to do whatever it took to afford the surgery means more to me than not being able to see the scar. i appreciate you for doing what a true mother should do, and i know your daughter does too.

Re: DMAN – wow, just a bit of education, it happens long before they are born, and has nothing to do with any sins they have accrued on earth. and it has nothing to do with anything the parent did right or wrong. yes, god bless me and jesus for giving me this deformity, because it has taught me a lot more than you will ever know.

Folks who were offended by my post: did I say I didn't have compassion for these kids? No. Did I make fun of them or the hell their families have gone through? No. Did I say that I'm perfect (yippee!) and they are not ? Of course not. What I SAID was that I don't like the way this charity is going after donations, utilising shock factor by plastering these photo montages of kids who have cleft palates. I understand the value of what the charity is doing and how the $250 operation and 25 minutes of a surgeon's skill can change these kids' lives. So, why not show THAT instead? Show a single a "before" picture .. and then an "after" so folks can see what a difference their money can make. But, I fear I waste my breath even bothering to explain myself to some of the kneejerk simpletons out there.

I'm a 37yr old married father of three. Probably the only dad in my town in Chicago suburbia that reads Perez daily. I like the gossip and when he reaches out for a good cause I have to commend him. He doesnt need to do this to make money for himself. I'm on it, I cant stand seeing these little broken smiles. Pitch in!

Oh and sorry, McCain is in and it's the right choice.

Re: doork – i understand your point, and i often ask myself that same question. sometimes the after photo is so beautiful and kind of amazing. i think the point of showing it in this manner is to try to quantify visually the number of people this effects. unfortunately for people with this deformity, it seems like such a lonley world (geez that sounded cheesy). for example, in my high school of over 1,000 people, i was the only person to have the deformity. by showing it this way, they are trying to say this is not some small extremely rare deformity, it effects a whole hell of a lot of people. the only problem i have with your original post is the fact that you term people with this deformity as "gross," whether it is or not, isn't there a better way to put it, we didn't choose to have our faces look like this.

When I was pregnant, I was told that this deformity can be totally avoided by a woman taking folic acid throughout her pregnancy.

I respect everyone who is defending and/or gone through a cleft palate. I don't know why it is so hard to just be happy that a group of people has taken this issue into their hands and are fixing children one at a time. I dont think it matters if they are in the United States or not, at least a child is one step closer to leading a better life. My baby bro had cleft palate and lip, his was very severe and expensive, but my family made it financially. If you are concered that your money is going to another counrty then please seek out a hospital or organization that will fix children in America. Stop wasting time on Perez Hilton and research a charity in America that you can donate your precious money to.

God made these babies just beautiful the way they are. Please don't interfere with God's plan. We should pray that we can accept them just the way God made them.
