Is this the wave of the future????

Police in Manila, Philippines are looking to convert their patrol cars to run on a mixture of diesel and used cooking oil from McDonald's, police officials and Mickey D's execs said Tuesday.

Because oil prices are so high, the project would convert cars in the city's financial district to run on a mix of 40 percent diesel and 60 percent cooking oil, its police chief.

Used cooking oil will be donated by financial district outlets of the Big Mac.

So does that mean that Manila will smell of french fries?

    some municipalities in alabama already do this for their city fleet (garbage trucks, electric dept., etc.). residents and business owners donate the cooking oil. also takes rye soap. auburn university sponsors the cities with the equipment. report about places in the US too that are doing this!

    This is old news! There was just a story on NPR about entire industries in the US based on this. There are companies who now drive around to all the restaurants and fast food places in NYC, pick up their used cooking oil, and convert it to usable fuel.

    Also, Daryl Hannah has been doing this for years and talking about it online and on Howard Stern for years!

    it's called bio diesel you nim rods. and you don't pour the oil in the car. it gets (easily) coverted in to bio diesel and used as regular fuel. this is not groundbreaking… but it's a great step environmentally for the Phillipines, so that I applaud.

    I run my Mercedes Benz on recycled veggie oil also known as bio-diesel. You don't need to convert a engine if it is already a diesel vehicle, all you do is go to a bio-diesel station and pump the shit in your diesel car or truck.
