Perez, this IS sad…really sad. But I don't understand how you comment so passionately on things like this that are detrimental to the gay community, yet you mock (mercilessly!) "celebrities" that are gay or are gay but haven't revealed yet. (Lindsay and Samantha!!) Seems alittle confused to me.

    22

U can't blame all of Colorado for something so heinous, Perez. Use a little discretion every now and then, would ya?

  23. 23

    You mean "Dear America!"
80% of this country just doesn't get what life's like for the LGBT population, nor does it care.
Same-Sex Marriage is all you hear about, but, as a gay man, I can tell you that issue isn't the primary one. How about just having the same employment and housing rights as straights? Right now there is NO federal protection and very few sates have protection against a person being evicted from their home or fired from their jobs just because they are gay. Ask most straights; they do not know that. Fact is, if you're LGBT, when you walk into work tomorrow, your boss could call you in to the office and simply say "We don't employ homos here" and let you go. You'd have NO constitutional right to challenge that.
So, is it strange that LGBT people are being killed (with impunity)? From birth, U.S. kids are taught that these people are different, sick, immoral. Our laws back that up in all but a few brave states. We can't pass a federal anti hate crime bill that protects by sexual orientation. So why would anyone be shocked?
We're the last minority in America that it's deemed acceptable to belittle and discriminate against. So I sort of smirk when I see the same-sex marriage debate. WTF, we can't even get a law passed to protect our lives, homes and jobs.

  24. nativ says – reply to this

    24

greeley sucks. they have horrible law enforcement. even the mayor has a restraining order against him. they have problems with getting people for jury duty. look it up.

greeley would be a horrible place to live for any law abiding citizen who doesn't fit a status quo.

"This is so so sad– I went to college in Greeley and it is one of the more tolerant communities in Colorado. I hope that the suspect is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

thats bullshit, Greeley is a small hick town (all states have them) i would say it's one of the LEAST tolerant communities in Colorado, and i grew up here.

  31. Bella says – reply to this

Perez is upset because he's a trans-gender person as well but he's also a dumbass for blaming Colorado for some hate filled idiots' crime.

  35. 35

hey Mr.Perez, it is funny you mention it. What about that blind item from a few days ago creating gossip about a transgender teen from a famous couple? Both situations are dreadful: one killed and the other one being outed by you, so give me a break.

    36

I live in boulder and boulder is extrememly tollerant of all kinds of people. we're the little blue dot in the middle of a red state :) but, there are terrible people everywhere, no matter what.this an absolutely horrifying story and i wish all the best to angie's family

  37. L says – reply to this

    37

This one heinous act does not reflect on all of the people of Colorado….I'm from Colorado and am just as shocked and upset as everyone else that this would happen.

  38. Perez says – reply to this

    38

    Dear Perez,

Do NOT blame the state of Colorado for the actions of one individual. This person has been arrested and will likely be charged with a hate crime if the police can find evidence that supports that theory. Most people here are very upset, yet you're such an idiot that you generalize this story. Why not be a decent blogger for once and share the tragedy as a story to inform all of us.

P.S. I better not see you here in Colorado. I am telling everyone I know the lies you have spread and there will likely be a beat down.

  43. jb says – reply to this

    43

Colorado is not to blame. Most who live here find this awful as well. Greeley has it's problems, but please don't lump all of CO into this. Most of the people who live here are open-minded and very liberal, however we do get lumped into conservative America because of all the Evangelicals that choose to live in CO Springs 2 hours south of Denver.

  44. smeej says – reply to this

    44

this is indeed a first! i made it all the way through the comments, SO FAR, without having to read pure hate. i'm sure most hateful commenters think that anonymously posting hateful replies is fun, but what i don't think has ever really sunken in is that they are actively supporting and encouraging the mindset that justifies this ongoing blood bath. come on people, how many straight folk get murdered each year by gays because of their heterosexuality?

  45. WTF says – reply to this

    45

That fact that another human being is murdered is senseless. But, making it a large issue b/c that person was transgender (GOD WHO KNEW THERE WOULD EVEN BE SUCH A WORD IN OUR VOCABULARIES) is too much. Why do people have to make such a big deal about their sexual preference? It becomes who they are" I'm GAY, this, I'm BISEXUAL that. And why do they deserve anymore "rights" than anyone else? They deserve the right to do their thing in private and to live their lives, but shit when they put in it the forefront of everything else what do they expect? There will always be someone who will not accept it and some times that person may be the one asshole who takes your life for it. She probably was killed by some man who she was trying to pass herself off as a woman to, he found out the truth and killed her. The whole thing is sick

I think all of us Coloradans would agree that this is a senseless tragedy. No area should be painted with a broad brush of stereotypical behavior. Re: Talia – Um, I live in Colorado and I seem to remember 3 brutal gay bashings in Boulder 3 monthly in a row… Boulder is the least tolerant place in Colorado. So somehow it seems strange that a tolerant town of every type of person would have fraternity kids beating up gays.

    80

No - that is not COLORADO. That is one person who is clearly disturbed. And COLORADO investigated and arrested the person responsible. It's not like COLORADO is allowing this behavior by not treating this as a serious matter. This is not a problem with COLORADO but a problem with people (men). COLORADO is very gay friendly, animal friendly, hetero friendly, earth friendly, 420 friendly - we are a friendly lot.

Insinuating that this behavior is somehow accepted in Colorado is ridiculous. Colorado is very open and accepting. Unfortunately idiots thrive everywhere. I'm just happy that this guy was caught. I'm aware of several teen and preteen transgender youths who thrive in the Boulder Public School system. I'm extremely proud to live in such a fair and open minded community. After living in the Southeast for several years, it's certainly a breath of fresh air.

I just wonder if the cross-dresser let the person know ahead of time that "she" was a "he"? Maybe that's what got "her" killed. Not saying this is the case, but alot of times, the cross-dresser doesn't let the person know ahead of time, then when it comes down to sex, the other guy is getting something he didn't expect. Looks like the cross-dresser did a good job making himself up, though. Looks better than some real women.
Whatever the case, God Bless, no one deserves to die for being who they are.

    88

how are you going to blame one whole state for one fucking idiot? what if we blamed california for all their idiots! damn…we'd be busy!

  89. 89

I'd like it if we could stop labelling these as hate crimes. Is it a terrible thing? Yes. Should the murderer be punished? Of course. But is this any worse of a crime because it's a "hate" crime? No. Murder is a crime, period. It is just as much a crime when a robber kills a store owner as it is when someone kills a person of a different sexual persuasion than themselves. In other news, I feel so terribly sorry for this family. Losing a child is bad enough, but losing one to violence is horrific.

  90. yitbo says – reply to this

    90

This happens all around the country. BTW: I'm sick of you calling out states for the wrong doing of one person. You could spend a lifetime doing hate crimes everyday but it's always up to the individual committing the crime. You blaming a state is like blaming the other driver when Shia was the drunk one.

It is worse than awful. This is America - supposidly home of the brave and the free. The country where you must be a closeted homosexual in it's own military. The country that was based on everyone's equal right to pursue happiness. I find it shameful that this would happen in such a country. This wouldn't and hasn't happened in only Colorado. This could happen anywhere. Sadly there will be many more hate crimes in America. The word Tolerance seems to sadly be missed in the vocabulary of many Americans.
We Americans spend so much time concerned with the actions of other nations. I am far more concerned about the action of my own.

This is just horrible. I live in Denver and must say the city is one of the most liberal and welcoming places for gays and transgenders. We have one of the largest Pride parade's in the country and it gives people such a horrible impression when terrible acts like this occur. God bless that beautiful person's family and sister (who I saw speak on the news) and I hope the evil man who did this is prosecuted to the fullest extent - We will not tolerate hate crimes - remember Matthew Shephard!!

  100. Puh-l says – reply to this

    100

Good! This isn't a tragedy! Don't live as an abomination if you don't want to pay the consequences. We need to see a lot more things like this and maybe people will remain the way God created them. The desire to be the opposite gender IS NOT a disease nor should it be treated as such. People think oh now that's not true but oh yes it is! When I was little I wanted to be Strawberry Shortcake but you didn't see me going and having my face fucked up so I could look like Strawberry Shortcake. And the mindless, idiotic parents that go along with this bullshit and allow their children to get transgender surgery should be allowed the same fate as their children.
