80% of this country just doesn't get what life's like for the LGBT population, nor does it care.
Same-Sex Marriage is all you hear about, but, as a gay man, I can tell you that issue isn't the primary one. How about just having the same employment and housing rights as straights? Right now there is NO federal protection and very few sates have protection against a person being evicted from their home or fired from their jobs just because they are gay. Ask most straights; they do not know that. Fact is, if you're LGBT, when you walk into work tomorrow, your boss could call you in to the office and simply say "We don't employ homos here" and let you go. You'd have NO constitutional right to challenge that.
So, is it strange that LGBT people are being killed (with impunity)? From birth, U.S. kids are taught that these people are different, sick, immoral. Our laws back that up in all but a few brave states. We can't pass a federal anti hate crime bill that protects by sexual orientation. So why would anyone be shocked?
We're the last minority in America that it's deemed acceptable to belittle and discriminate against. So I sort of smirk when I see the same-sex marriage debate. WTF, we can't even get a law passed to protect our lives, homes and jobs.

As a mother of 3 teenagers my heart goes out to her family- What a beautiful kid she was.
