It's news like this that makes us happy we live in a FREE country.
According to new reports, China will censor the Internet used by the foreign media during the Olympics in Beijing.
This completely reverses the pledge the government had made to offer complete media freedom during the games.
Sun Weide, a spokesman for the organizing committee, said "During the Olympic Games we will provide sufficient access to the Internet for reporters."
He also added that journalists would not be able to access websites or any information connected to the Falungong spiritual movement, which is banned in China.
Weide added that some other sites would also be unavailable to journalists, but did not specify which ones.
Oh, and did we mention that the Chinese people have to deal with this every day? The same thing in Cuba.
Their government blocks out certain sites and restricts access to their people.

Um, I dunno about this… have you actually ever been to China and tried out their internet instead of listening to our exaggerated American media's accounts? I was just in China doing a teaching job for two months and all this Tibet, communism, and internet censoring stuff is total bullshit the American media made up. I was able to use the internet for whatever I wanted and there was no censoring! I went to Tibet on a trip and every single person there was happy and accepting of China's takeover because they were third world country before and now they are thriving on their economic success. I think people should actually take things into perspective and not listen to American media 100%, because it's not always the most truthful (as we have come to know from past events).
If you think that China is so horrible, why do you advocate government policies which would eventually lead to this type of control in our country. You say you are glad you are free, then why do you support politicians and policies which increase government in American's lies. You really need to figure out what you support because you are all over the board.

As an American who lives in China and reads Perez religiously (on the vast majority of the internet that isnt censored) your negative articles about thecountry are pissing me off. First of all America is not a free country. You can't say what you want, nor do you have a 100% guarantee that your phone isn't being wiretapped and your internet activities aren't being monitored. We have some pretty archaic laws in the United States as well - gays can't get married everywhere, etc. That being said, I just got back from Shanghai 4 days ago and I got on whatever website I wanted to, it just took a long time. They don't have what I guess could be called traditional communism - if that were true than their economy wouldn't be booming. Capitalism is rampant in China right now, so before we go knocking another country let's make sure we have our facts straight. Just because they're not a "democracy", doesn't mean they're wrong.

The only difference is that they don't restrict access — they just monitor the internet sites we visit, telephone conversations and our email communications. That' why there's such a brouhaha about "warrantless surveillance."

Censoring is a huge part of China as a whole. I visited there this past spring, and they read every single email that is sent out, and choose wether it is sent or deleted. Even the few american news channels there were censored. The second the topic of Taiwan appeared in the news, a huge black dot would appear in the screen and the sound would cut out. It's very different over there.
most chinese living in china are quite happy with their situation at the moment. they feel that china is more free and more full of opportunities than ever before.

BOYCOTT THE OLYMPICS
To everyone who replied to my posts. Yes, Perez may not be a political expert, and his post was rather shallow when there are bigger issues at hand, but it's his blog. And he gives us the freedom to comment on his posts. Yeah yeah, I know there are tons of shit we Americans don't even have an inkling about but still we are so lucky to live here. Why are so many people immigrating here? Do you hear about any mass immigrations of Americans to say…..Australia? Actually would probably be as good or better than America, but I digress.
pt2…My points are:
1. The true facts are that the Chinese Government has suppresed the Tibetans from practising their religion, drove the Dalai Lama out of the country (he fled before they could kill him), they imprison Tibetans who display the Tibetan flag or the Dalai Lama's photograph, Tibet is in real danger of losing all its cultural and religious aspects because Chinese Government is doing such a good job of "liberating" them, such as shooting women trying to cross mountain passes to escape Tibet. I have nothing against the Chinese people. It's the government.
pt 3. 2. The Olympics are for the world, not just one country. They happen to be being held in Beijing this year, and a lot of the spotlight is on China so therefore, a lot of the lies and crimes against humanity are coming into awareness. Can you imagine forcing factories of a whole CITY to shut down so the air will be clean enough to breathe, though. Shit.
3. It IS our business. The world is getting smaller and smaller. We are all connected. I may focus on helping Tibet, you can focus on helping the kids on the south side of Chicago getting shot walking home from school. We should ALL help somewhere. And yes, I'm from Chicago. Yeah, take care of your own backyard but that doesn't mean don't care and it's none of our business when people are blowing up people on the street in India. We are all human beings who should have compassion for one another.
And everyone else writing nonsense just to see it on the computer screen, grow up.
