Chinese Censorship: An Update

chineseflag1.JPG

The International Olympic Committe released the following statement on Thursday, in response to recent reports that the Chinese government will censor the websites journalists and visitors have access to during next week's Beijing Olympic games.

They say:

"Our position is that the IOC has always encouraged the Beijing 2008 organisers to provide media with the fullest access possible to report on the Olympic Games, including access to the internet.

In light of internet access problems which were experienced this week by media in the Olympic Games Main Press Centre in Beijing, the IOC – namely Chairman of the Beijing 2008 IOC

Coordination Commission Hein Verbruggen and Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli – held meetings and discussions today with Games organizers (BOCOG) and Chinese authorities.

The issues were put on the table and the IOC requested that the Olympic Games hosts address them. We understand that BOCOG will give details to the media very soon of how the matter has been addressed. We trust them to keep their promise.

The IOC would like to stress that no deal with the Chinese authorities to censor the internet has ever in any way been entered into."

They sound like a bunch of pussies to us.

The IOC needs to take a stronger stance!

What do U think?

China should have never been given the Olympics. It's been nothing but problems. They are not willing to change or integrate with the rest of the West. I mean abso;lutley no offense to the Chinese people, but the Government of China just can't seem to get with the program. I would never go to China for the Olympics (I can't afford to go), but even if I could, I would be concerned about my safety. I am really worried that there might be terrorist attempts or hardline government crackdowns that result in bloodshed. Also I'm black and from what I've heard, some Chinese establishments have been told not to cater to blacks/serve them, etc. This is just unacceptable to me. No wonder people want to leave that country. The government sounds terribly backwards.

Anyone that actually visits that country is always blown away and knows that the future lies there. Btw, when I was in Beijing recently, there was no smog AT ALL. China has cleaner air than New Jersey. This is all unsubstantiated propaganda BULLSHIT. Europeans are always making fun of the United States because we always say we're so free and liberated. China should have never been given the Olympics. Being a communist country is enough to ban them from hosting or participating the Olympics game. I honestly don't trust a bit from these mother fuckers. These tyrants would do anything to save face or cover their horrible trace of act. If they think the rest of the world is just as stupid as their pathetic citizens, then they must be fucking retards.
P.S. don't call me a racist! Im chinese myself, I absofuckinglutely hate every single thing about these dictators.

  61. 61

The ioc can't not have the games and China knows this. It is up to the individual countries to decide weather or not they are gonna participate in the games. China can do whatever it wants. They not doing anything thay arent already in the news for everyday. Business as usual for them. I hope the U.S boycotts the games. It has been done in the past. I think it is very important and needs to be done again. Someone needs to stand up and not be so p/c. The medals are not important. What is important is the human rights issue.

The IOC lied to the world originally by saying that they had extracted promises from China that China would improve their Civil Rights record if they were granted the Olympics. The IOC claimed that China promised to give the press open, unfettered use of the internet with no censorship. That was all a lie. The IOC admitted yesterday that they never asked for nor did they receive such promises. The IOC has been caught taking bribes from cities vieing for the Olympics. Salt Lake City was corruption at its finest. The world needs to stop participating in the Olympics until the IOC disbands. If it can reform with some participants who aren't crooks and have a smattering of decency, maybe at sometime in the future the Olympics can start again.

dumb people like you make it that much easier for the media to manipulate their readers. china is such a beautiful place, the people are nice and the culture is amazing. you don't see people getting dragged off the streets for saying chairman Mao was an asshole. trust me, i have done that in beijing.
and as for perez, you should really stick to what you do best. talking smack about people you don't like. and not go into the whole politics thing.

  73. 73

Re: d – China is a beautiful place and the people are great :) I'm talking about the GOVERNMENT. And you've obviously never read about the people kept as slaves, the toxic air, the censorship of anything anti-chinese, or how the Chinese people themselves fear to say anything about their government for fear of reprimands. You can't even peacefully protest in China without the cops breaking it up! So yes, do some research! And WTF do eyebrows have to do with anything? If you're going to be insulting at least be INTELLIGENT about it. Then maybe people will take you seriously as a human being and no one will think you're just a twelve year old boy :)

  74. Kat says – reply to this

    74

What do I think? That it's not the IOC's place to come in and tell the Chinese Gov't how to govern. If someone from another country comes to the USA and doesn't like an aspect of the law or gov't, do we change it for them? No. The IOC and media should have thought about this BEFORE China was awarded this honour! People in China are killed for speaking out and what are we and the IOC up in arms about? Media forces not having access to the Internet?

  75. Alec says – reply to this

    75

Re: d – I can't believe how DUMB you are. I hope you're not chinese. Cause if you're, you really should stay in China until the day you die!
In regards to what you said "you don't see people getting dragged off the streets for saying chairman Mao was an asshole." That's only because those people didn't yell it out loud. I can assure you that the Chinese government would do anything to keep people NOT talking shit about their government! Mao was the foundation and the root of the Chinese communist. As a resut, they won't let you make any so called "offensive" comments about Mao as long as you're in China.
In addition, who says chinese people are not nice or the culture is not amazing? Besides, what does that have to do with hosting the Olypmics games? The government itself is fucked, that's enough to fucking boycott them and ban them from hosting the game! The idiots in the committee really should bang their heads against the walls. Serve them right for picking a fucked up and corrupt country to host the game in the first place!
I suggest to read more news from some NON chinese government media. I'm Chinese myself, being in Toronto, I still feel that the a lot of the Chinese media are being pressured by the Chinese government. A lot of the Chinese media are on the left wing.

  76. 76

From Rep. Frank Wolf & Rep. Chris Smith, just returned from China:

"We also visited an Internet café to see if access to the Internet was restricted by the Chinese government. It was. We tried to access a number of different Web sites, including the National Endowment for Democracy, information about the Dali Lama and media sites including Voice of America and Reporters Without Borders. None of the sites would allow us access. All came up with an error message… China is not progressing. It is regressing. It is more violent, more repressive, and more resistant to democratic values than it was before we opened our ports to freely accept Chinese products."

"There have been reports by groups such as Amnesty International that the Chinese government has rounded up people in the streets of Beijing who might "threaten stability" during the Olympic Games, and has detained them without trial. Human Rights Watch has reported that the Chinese government has tightened restrictions on domestic and foreign media, in an effort to control what information leaks out during coverage of the Olympics about China's repressive and violent nature."

Analysts have likened the 2008 Beijing Olympics to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, in which Nazi Germany soft-pedaled its anti-Semitic agenda and plans for territorial expansion, fooling the international community with an image of a peaceful, tolerant Germany under the cover of the Olympic Games."

Continuing to ingnore the promises made to the IOC and the international community, China has launched a fresh crackdown on supporters of the Dalai Lama. On July 14, a regulation was issued by the regional party and government disciplinary commissions, as reported by the state-run China Daily.

Actually, it is an ultimatum to present and retired communist party members and government employees in the Tibet Autonomous Region: they have been given two months to withdraw their children from overseas schools and monasteries run by what they refer to as the "Dalai clique," in India and other countries.
Failure to comply with the ultimatum: expulsion from the party and loss of employment.

Since 1960, Tibetans in exile have been opening up schools, as well as monasteries and temples. There are now 83 schools outside of Tibet which offer Tibetan students a liberal education which respects their own heritage and is free of CCP propaganda. (Chinese is the main language of instruction of most Tibetan secondary schools). The Department of Religion and Culture of the Tibetan government in exile works to preserve the spiritual and cultural heritage of Tibet. It helps support 223 monasteries and 15 nunneries, while the Department of Education administers 82 schools: 64 in India, 14 in Nepal and 4 in Bhutan.

Despite its legal guarantees of self-governance and minority "protections," the Chinese dictatorship subjects the Uyghurs (a Muslim minority) to exactly the same methods of systematic violations of civil and political rights continually used against the Tibetans and Mongols: imprisonment, torture and even execution without trail, surveillance, (including threatening and encouraging the members of the ethnic group itself to spy on each other), surveillance of religious activities, forced sterilizations and abortions, coerced birth control, lack of freedom of movement, discrimination in the work place, exclusion from local government and economic development, discrimination against their culture, lack of freedom of assembly, population transfers, militarization, and the extraction of the natural resources of the area.

The olympics are a sad joke. Thirty years ago you could pretend that it was all about the love of sport, but even the most delusional could not disguise the fact that it is about professional athletics and Nationalism.

China wanted the Olypics because of the pathetic but sadly true notion that it would bring international legitimacy. It should never have been given to them on that basis.

These Olympics - if they are remembered at all - will be considered of a piece with 1936 in Berlin.

With their track record regarding crimes against humanity and human rights — and who in their right mind would want to go to that God forsaken country anyways! Mike. I think you are right. China is a very real threat the US and the world. They are stealing US intellectual propery like crazy without any fear of prosecution. i think you should stick to celebrity news and not politics.
the olympics is not about sports anymore, it's all about politics. People are saying it's a bad choice for them to have chosen Beijing in the first place. London is just as bad of a place to hold the Olympics. Why can't they choose a country and let the government fix it up themselves? Just like what Beijing has done - equestrian events are being held in Hong Kong.
If the same thing was being done in the United States, there would be no criticism towards the issue. Stop looking down on the Chinese people. They are already proving to the world what they can do. I don't see the United States being a choice for the Olympic Committee in the next coming years.

Re: sjef – I like how you ignore every argument that negates what you say and just focus on me being albino :) I noticed you don't have a pic up of yourself. Hmm, I wonder what kind of troll you must be to rant facelessly online :) You don't even believe in what you're saying enough to make a decent argument :)

China has not kept its promises to improve its human rights conditions! Conditions have even gotten worse… don't believe any of what you see during the games, China's propoganda will try to blind you, while all the political prisoners are locked away during the games..

To have the Olympic Games in China is just like to do an Extreme Makeover in Ethiopia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!IT IS A JOKE!!!!!
In the ancient Greece they stopped all sorts of military actions for the duration of the Olympic Games ( which lasted for 3 months) . THAT IS WHY THE OLYMPICS IS A SYMBOL OF PEACE AND UNITY………..So China, WITHDRAW your army out from Tibet!!!!!!

I'm a Chinese living in China. Most of you don't know China at all. Do you know the culture of China, the history of China . You wil change your mind if you have really been to China. It have become more openning and more deveoped. The imagine of China in most of your mind is still staying 1960s.It is unfair for China and Chinese people. If you really care about the deveiopment of China and Chinese people, you must go to China, observe the society via your own eyes. You will get a surprise. Don't always trust the media, please~
