Mini Russert Following In Dad's Footsteps

Dad must be smiling down from heaven.

According to a new report, the late Tim Russert's son, Luke, will be covering the Democratic and Republican conventions for NBC News.

The younger Russert's assignment as a convention correspondent focusing on "youth issues" is his first for NBC, the network said Thursday.

NBC New's president said, "Never before in an election cycle has so much attention turned to the youth vote, and Luke will bring a unique perspective to covering it."

Russert said in a statement that he was "humbled and grateful" for the opportunity.

We're sure he'll do a great job!

Sucks for other more qualified kids who didn't get the job because their last name is not Russert. NBC should stop with sympathy job. Let him earn it like every other kid.

Nepotism. I like Tim R. and have nothing against mini Tim, but Jeez, a regular person, with a great education and a lot of knowledge on the subject would never get a position just like that. It's all hand me downs….

    38. Jenna says – reply to this

      38

Awww. He's probably liberal as shit, but I think this is a great opportunity for him. He looks so much like his dad — maybe he has some of Tim's natural talent? I hope this helps him heal. Losing his dad must have been really, really hard, esp. being in the media spotlight.

    39. the G says – reply to this

I liked Tim Russert alot, but this has a ick factor to it. Why, I'm not sure, can't quite put my finger on it, but it felt ick. Make sense?

    41. andy says – reply to this

      41

I thought he wanted to cover sports on the radio? Since when was this kid interested in politics. They obviously offered him the job cause they feel sorry for him. Why the fuck cant nbc give someone this job thats actually deserving

    42. conce says – reply to this

      42

This kid has got to be good, NBC wouldn't be doing this unless he has proven himself, his dad would want him to work his ass off so this hasn't been handed to him because of his dad death. good for Luke Russett. I hope he brings alot of perspective on the youth vote. go get um Luke.

    43. k says – reply to this

      43

luke is a looker :) but he probably won't want to let down his dad & he'll do a good job.

    44. Robin says – reply to this

      44

What exactly makes him qualified for the job (other than nepotism)??

    45. Truth says – reply to this

      45

He's not into politics. He did a sports-talk radio show with his daddy's friend. Wow, that makes him qualified for this gig. His other qualification was taking skanky photos in a hot tub. Google it.

both nbc and this kid are milking the dead dad for ratings - period

the kid should be ashamed of himself

    47. rjp3 says – reply to this

      47

did conce really write "this kid has to be good" …. no
the kid only has to be ok for the ghoul factor to pull in ratings ….
many people work very hard for work like this …. and he and NBC are just milking the corpse of Tim Russert for ratings. Disgusting.

      59

He has worked so hard for this and it is his right to be on network news!! Fuck all those bitches who went to journalism school, then reported from the streets of Detroit and Newark! If they wanted a network news job so bad, why didn't they get born to a network news guy that was about to die? Because they didn't want it like Lukey Pukey! You go Lukey Pukey and show those bums in Detroit and Oklahoma City and El Paso what it's like to get what you deserve!

      63

Anyone who works at an NBC affiliate station, and has been there plugging away for the last 5, 10, 15 years in the hopes of getting that big break and moving up to network, ought to go in tomorrow and freak the fuck out. You people mean nothing to NBC or they wouldn't spit in your faces like this and place this child of privilege on a pedestal while you struggle to pay your bills. How disrespectful is this piece of shit that he would step over all of those people?

    65. lettu says – reply to this

      65

I was really struck by the poise he showed following his father's death. Tim Russert always seemed like a guy you would want to live next door to and talk politics while you were getting your mail, and Luke has some of that same fairly unique appeal. I don't think this is a sympathy thing at all and certainly not a lucky break for this young man. Just a realization that there was something special about the manner in which Tim Russert spoke and analyzed and presented things that people really responded to … and his son shares some of these qualities. Sometimes the offspring of prominent people have talent and determination too.

Wow some of you are so rude and disrespectful. Luke is intelligent, articulate and has a great tv presence. I can understand how some would be upset over his new job.. especially those working within the lower ranks of NBC but we all know life (jobs in particular) is about networking. Many people receive jobs as a result of who they know. It is not how you got the job, but what you do when you get there. I think he will do a great job!

    80. eliza says – reply to this

to all you haters… i know luke personally and he cares so much about this and is such a hard worker. so think again before you say he got this just because of his father and he wont work hard. he handled his father's passing with such grace and poise and anyone/everyone should be impressed by him. Why cant we all just be happy for him?

PEREZ is even happy for him and routing for him… so everyone should be! (love you perez… but we all know you aren't the nicest to everyone… but isn't that why we love you)

      WEEEEW LUKE!

I'm not surprised at all. He has such a comfortable, easy way about him when he is in front of the cameras. He was tremendous during the most difficult time of his life. And to those who say he's not even "into politics" — how the hell would you even know? I heard him say that he and his father constantly talked about world events, leaders and politics. He probably has a better inside working knowledge about what's going on than most people. Kudos to him! He will do well at whatever he puts his mind to because he's a sharp, focused kid.

I have seen Luke Russert on TV, and he is very articulate and composed, and DOES have a great TV presence. If he wants a career in TV journalism, I say go for it. We need more talking heads with a believablilty quotient. Seems like a credit to his family.

This guys dad dies and he gets offered the dream job that I have spent 6 years and $72,000 working towards. It much be nice to have the "legacy" admissions policy follow you into the job market.
