China Concedes (A Little)

Filed under: Zportz > Media Minute > Politik

We mentioned a few days ago that the Chinese government has blocked journalists' access to a number of Internet sites at the Olympic Games' main press center and media venues.

There's been a little development.

The government has agreed to unblock some Internet sites.

Unfortunately, others remained off limits.

This is far from the “free and unfettered access” the organizers and Chinese officials had promised for months.

Boo!

Senior International Olympic Committee officials met late into the night Thursday with their Chinese counterparts and said they reached an agreement to unblock sites, although the IOC statement said the details were still being formulated.

The IOC is such a big bunch of pussies.

Why don't they DEMAND that the Chinese keep their promise?

Too bad these games haven't even begun and they're already tainted with so much unpleasantness.

The IOC will NEVER make China keep their promise, they were bribed to give China the games and they are open to bribes for anything else. If they tried to come down on China too hard China will just turn around and expose how much they used to pay off each member of the committee.

China has always had these limits on internet access in their country. Why would they allow additional access to foreigners who come to their country? Why do these people need such acces when they are in China if they can get it before going there?

You do realize that our country censors our media too, don't you? When was the last time you saw the coffins of those killed in Iraq or Afghanastan arrive home? Never because the Bush administration won't allow it. During the Viet Nam war there was footage of caskets coming off planes on the news every night. The press is censored here too.

Why did the IOC agree to have the Olympics in China in the first place. Of all the countries that wanted to host the Games, the IOC gives it to China of all countries? China treats its people horribly & its animals even worse. Boo indeed on the IOC.

    26. jeez says – reply to this

      26

China wanted the games to go on without a hitch.
With all the emphasis on just that, it's obvious the world media will only focus on the bad things about the games.
      A shame really.

people have to remember they are going into one of the few remaining communist states left in the world. They have over 1 billion people that they need to 'control'. What difference does it make if the press can't access porn and subversive sites. They are there to celebrate the athletes. that should be the whole story, not history or problems of china. If they feel the need to include that in their writings, do it after they return home or have someone from their home write about it. Yes, there are alot of horrifying things that happen in China, but that is not what they are there for. And if they can't go a few weeks without their porn fixes, stay home.

The women and men in China arent 'WHORES, ALCOHOLICS, BI-SEXUAL,DUG ADDICTS,FUCKUPS' like people here in the U.S. - Americans are ALL fucked up! You read the BIBLE? The bible is strictly AGAINST people doing WHATEVER they want to do. The bible is against SO-CALLED Freedom of the people, due to the simple fact, that humans given that freedom would fuck up the world, when allowed to do whatever they want to do. Look at the U.S. as the #1 global fuckup. ANYTHING GOES IN THE U.S.! Thats why the U.S. is all fucked up, people do WHATEVER they want to do. So deal wth all your dumb ass problems. Another thing: this is why a number of religious group dont believe in voting. Why? Because when you allow MAN to change gods laws - look at what you get. Rapes, Murders, drugs, gays, etc. Wake up! MOST people NEED to be CONTROLLED. Fools! You need law and order. Praise China!

      40

      Perez, this is enough.

The Chinese people get so much discrimination from the western world. You are encouraging this. And the Chinese deserve an apology from you.

If the United States did this, everyone would see the good side of it. The Chinese are coming up with good plans and ideas to protect their own people. I don't see Bush doing anything to protect the American people.
There would be no criticism at all if the United States did this.

You are getting a bit out of order, Perez.

The young people in China deserve a strong apology from you.

I'm certain some of these posts are being made by the Chinese government in some capacity. They reek of Engrish, are fantastically supportive of the government and are quick to rip on the United States. It's interesting if it's true, the Chinese people can't see your site, but the Chinese government thinks it's appropriate to influence people who can.

I have nothing against China or the Chinese, but giving the Olympics to them was a big mistake. My main concern is the shit poor quality of the air. How are the athletes supposed to perform optimally when their lungs are saturated with soot? What was the IOC THINKING?!!!

A previous poster of yours on a prior related story stated that the promise you've trotted out here of a 'free and unfettered access' was never promised. Fake story. Anyway, free and unfettered needs to be defined. If media is not charged for the internet, then they're getting the 'free' part. If unfettered means the ability to e-mail results and Olympic related stories, then I'd bet they have that, too. If it means they're choke because they can't get their private little gambling or porn sites, then tough. Respect your host country and its prior known limits.
