Lots of folks over in the Golden State are very very pissed off at the Governator!
California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says that 10,000 layoffs and 200,000 pay cuts are necessary because of the state's dire financial straits.
Other government officials claim that it's all politics. Duh.

Don't blame the govenator, blame the stupid legislators who haven't done their job. Its in the California constitution to have a budget in place by July of every year. Instead, they choose to spend their time trying to take away your freedom and ban everything like balloons, fast food restaurants and plastic, and decide to solve their lack of fiscal responsiblility by taxing the very people who voted them into office. Tell them to get their butts in gear and decide on a damn budget!!!

i saw that he was going to cut pay to federal min wage… which is much lower than cali min wage.. I thought he couldn't do that! I think he did it bc lawmakers couldn't agree on a budget so he put this in place basically to bully lawmakers into getting a budget in place for him. People dont realize that this will also affect higher education, tuition and financial aide. The State of Wisconsin was in a similar situation last year and they we were without a budget for way longer than a month due to partisan disputes. Thank god we have an awesome democratic governor who fought tooth and nail to resolve the issue without the same measures that the Governator took.
This really sucks.
My parents work for the state, but they work with public health and safety, so I think they will be alright. Thank god!

Government workers and overspending is what sucks the lifeblood from the economy. They have jobs that shouldn't exist and get paid way too much for doing nothing. Have you heard of a budget, Perez? When the money is coming in, the money shouldn't be going out.
Well for the people with the paycuts, their salary *WILL BE REIMBURSED* once a budget is signed. Let's hope they were "saving for a rain-y day" in the meantime…

i dont think people realize just HOW much of a pay cut it is. My mom works for the DMV of West Covina, Ca and has been for 30 years. Anyway, the governor has cut the workers pay to $6.55 an hour. This is the federal minimum wage. California's minimum wage is $8.00. So right now My mom is working for less money than someone who works at McDonalds! That is JUST DISGRACEFUL! And sadly, she we are not the only family this affects. There are over 200,000 state employees. Basically, the governor is being an ASSWHOLE!

While many CA state employees think Arnold threw them under the bus, what they are missing is that this is a wake-up call from Arnold to the higher ups. The higher ups are not doing their job. Their job is to sighn the budget-ON TIME. The leaders are on vacation and doing things other than resolving the budget. Arnold told them last year it was unacceptable to not pass the budget on time. It is unacceptable. They should be kissing our arse, not the other way around. We elected them to do their job. They repeately fail us. They seem to turn in to starving dogs when they are elected into office. They apparently think their jobs is to f-off and slurp perks. This wake up call says do your job or the masses suffer. Mr. Iran is right, the Big Boys are going down. Everyone matters. There are no spare parts. Times are a chang'in. Yippy! Gotta love the dram of it.

Perez, I usually like your posts, but I think you are sensationalizing this one a bit. First off, he's demanding the lay-offs (temporary workers only)and pay cuts only if the state doesn't pass a budget, which they were supposed to do, and were paid by us to do days ago. Once a budget is passed, he will re-hire the temporary workers and reinstate the regular pay, with back pay, for the 200,000 others. Please note that this is his way of getting money to pay the states bills. If my household were in financial trouble, the first thing I would do would be to lay off my helpers, ie nannie, gardener, chef, etc (I don't have these, just an example) so that I could pay my mortgage, electricity, etc. That's just what he's doing, and I applaude him for that.

Times are getting tougher cuz of this stupid war! Here we are in the midst of a recession (say what you like people, it is what it is) and we're STILL borrowing $2million per day to finance a war that we cant win!!! Think about it, when our troops go off to war, they pray that they come back. When they're troops go off to war, they go with the intention of never coming back. I believe that oure state has had govs in the past that stopped the payroll altogether so this is a mild reaction to th esituation. The fact is we do not have the budget to keep taking care of the dead weight. Government workers are th eleast productive workers in the world yet they have the bast benefits. The government needs a serious efficiency expert because for all the fucking money, they get nothing accomplished.
We need Government cuts across the entire US starting at the White House. If we got rid of all the useless people than our taxes could be cut by billions and the deficit would be paid off in no time. The Government is just a great sucking machine of the citizens pay checks.
