JACKSON, Miss. - Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman has died of injuries suffered in a car accident late Sunday night.
Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Kathy Stringer said Freeman, 71, passed away early Monday morning. The hospital is about 90 miles north of the accident scene in rural Tallahatchie County in the Mississippi Delta.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams confirmed Freeman was in a wreck shortly before midnight Sunday, but said he was still gathering information and had few details Monday.
Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, said he arrived at the accident scene on Mississippi Highway 32 soon after it happened about 4 miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owned a home with his wife.
McFerrin said it appeared that Freeman's car was airborne went it left the highway and landed in a ditch.
"They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle," McFerrin said. "He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point."
Freeman is best remembered for roles in "Driving Miss Daisy" and the recent summer hit "The Dark Knight".

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (AFP) — Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was in a "serious" condition in hospital on Monday after being involved in a car crash, US media reported.
The 71-year-old star, who won an Academy Award for his role in 2004's "Million Dollar Baby," was hospitalized after the crash late Sunday near Ruleville, Mississippi, reports said.
Details of Freeman's condition and injuries were unclear, however a spokesman for the Memphis Regional Medical Center described them as "serious."
"All I can say is one word: His condition is serious," spokeswoman Kathy Stringer told People magazine. Other reports cited friends of the actor as saying he was sitting up in bed and talking.
Freeman, who is currently starring in Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" was hospitalized after the car he was driving went off the road and flipped several times reports said, citing the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Morgan Freeman has been my favorite actor for many years now. Even when he makes crap (probably for the money) he never phones in his performance (unlike several Academy Award winning peers of his). Further evidence that he is a true artist who doesn't buy into the hype-he has quietly lived in Mississippi near his family for many years. GET WELL MR. FREEMAN. I want to see you live to be a hundred and picking up another Oscar that year as well!
