"Church wants "Gay Boulevard" name changed"

But gay means happy! CLICK HERE to read the article accompanying this headline.

Church wants "Gay Boulevard" name changed

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – What’s in a name? A lot of your church sits on Gay Boulevard.

That’s the case for Second Baptist Church in San Antonio.

Officials there want the name changed.

In order to do that, the church will pay a $500 application fee to the city to change the name and pay for about $800 worth of new street signs.

“First of all, Gay Street, that’s not a proper name because I’m, anti-gay,” said someone with the church.

“We get opposition, it’s the people that have an address on the street who have to change stationery or information they have. But there are no residents with the address of gay street right now, so that’s not an issue,” said Roderick Sanchez who is the Director of Development Services.

Church officials say this is not all about sexual preference.

They say that their facility has been in the neighborhood for 120 years and plans to open a community center down the road.

A city park nearby already bears the church’s name.

They want the street changed to Second Baptist Way.

The San Antonio City Council will vote on the name change proposal Thursday.

Gay does mean happy, and this is stupid sometimes the church takes it too far. It's only a street name, they should be taking care of things a little more important like starving children in their community?

  3. 3

OMG–that would be so WRONG!! Ya, let's change it to a CHURCH name?? BAD BAD BAD form…. hey–FIRST????

  4. 4

that's actually ridiculous of them. i'm a pastor's daughter and i'm TOTALLY ok with gay/straight/or bi romance. i think it's giving everyone connected to the church a bad name because a handful of old geezers can't remember that jesus tells us to love EVERYBODY.

  7. 7

  12. 12

Completely moronic. I can understand if they wanted to change the name from Adolf Hitler Boulevard or Idi Amin Way. But I guess they'll get their way. Yeeesh!

why is being gay such a big issue in the Church? of all the people, they're the ones who are supposed to be against gender discrimination and the like. damn hypocrites, what happened to everyone was created in God's image and likeness bla bla bla? can't recall the bible saying anything about why God doesn't like gays. despite the fact that they can't have babies. how bout those who are single by choice? we're already overpopulated, what more without gays.

  14. 14

Actually "Gay" is a proper name. As in Gayla, Gaylord or just Gay. It's pretty common for a girl to be named that. So genius there needs to pick up a name book sometime. That's just plain stupid.

  15. 15

Some people really need to get a life!!!! I have a friend with the last name of Gay, is she supposed to change her name? All the poverty and war in the world and this "christian" church is spending money on a street name.

  16. 16

    Re: Shelby7 – *clap*

  17. 17

Gay's also a name. What if it were Fred St.? Would they want to change that?

  18. 18

oh no.. first trying to change GAY ST in NY.. next they are going to come for GAY ST in Baltimore, MD!

  19. 19

this reminds me of shows like queer eye for the straight guy and stuff, the pic i mean
can anyone tell me where this is?
i really wanna move to manhattan when i'm older, the pic makes me happy
but then again manhattan seems like party party a lot of the time when i watch shows like will & grace or friends thats what i want tbh,
lol this is irrelevant but it just reminds me of that.

  20. 20

I happen to agree with the majority. The Church should worry about more important things and spend the money where it would do the most good in the community.

  21. 21

also why the hell should it be changed to something to do with the church?!?!
not everyone's gay yes, but most people find nothing wrong with it
BUT MOST PEOPLE, the majority are different religions or NOT religious at all and don't appreciate religion forced down their throats.

  22. 22

    the name is cool! n_n

  23. 23

Wow…that's stupid. But it reminds me of an intersection in downtown Nashville. Gay St and Church St meet on 1st Ave., right by the River Front. Check it out. LOL.

  24. 24

Riiiiiight, not about anti-gay hahaha what a joke! Maybe they could take their money and holy efforts elsewhere and put it to good use instead of wasting time over a damn street name. Give me a friggin' break!!!!!

  25. 25

Makes me ashamed to be from Texas

  26. 26

“First of all, Gay Street, that’s not a proper name because I’m, anti-gay,” said someone with the church.

Church officials say this is not all about sexual preference.

*Maybe the church should have organized their bigot congregation to say the same thing as the church*

  27. Steak says – reply to this

Gay means happy? I thought gay meant…takes it in the can and sucks d*ck.

  28. 28

they need to get over it

  29. 29

The ironic thing is…. the Gay street in Toronto, is called CHURCH STREET! HAHAHAHAAHHA.

    Stupid Homophobes.

  30. 30

Gay is also a last name, which is probably where the name of the street came from, like the 18th century playwright John Gay.

  31. 31

    Re: AgentGiggles.

Haha you are so correct, people like this are so fucked in the head its PATHETIC.

  32. 32

What Bullshit! These bible beaters are the first to say "I dissaprove or It's wrong" and they are the ones that are getting their Cocks sucked in the back room of the church! Please!!!!

  33. 33

Unbelievable! I guess that " we are all God's Children" is not true??? What the hell is wrong with people these days??? They need to change the Church's name to "Hate Church".

  34. 34

Re: karensneversober – lol… I pastor's daughter's screen name is "karensneversober". Thats hilarious.

  35. 35

really???…no seriously, REALLY??? this is why people hate religion because all the f*&kin nuts give it a bad name

  36. 36

this is insane. in nashvegas gay st has churches all over it but church st is where most of the gay bars are. you dont hear anyone complaining here.

  37. 37

That's not right ! Leave it there, I like it.

  38. 38

One of many things that's wrong with organized religion. Babtist's are radicals to begin with.

  39. 39

  40. 40

who cares??? change it to brownstar ave. see if people bitch …….. maybe not a good idea; i would soooooooo steal that street sign cuz that would be AWESOME !!!!!!!!!

  41. 41

I was so upset when I heard about this. I am a Christian and work with one of the members of this church. I heard about it yesterday and was outraged. Today I was saddened to hear this news is becoming national- I am so embarrased by my fellow Christians for this behavior. There is no reason for them to change the name of the street. It is petty and down right idotic.

  42. 42

May I suggest changing the name to "Atheist St."?

  43. 43

They should have thought about then when they decided to put their church on Gay St. What idiots!! "This is not at all about sexual preference" their are right it has nothing to do with sexual preference and EVERYTHING to do with them being closed-minded hypocrites!!!

  44. Ariel says – reply to this

WOAH taking that way too far!!!!!!!!!!
that's the stupidest thing i have ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!
definitely going overboard with this, gay does mean happy anyway ;D
i think they need to focus on more important things than the name of streets and who people fall in love with…they can't control everything

  45. 45

I went to Gay Street United Methodist Church growing up, and no one thought anything of it… but then, we were in Ohio. Not that we don't have our homophobes, but we're not in the bible belt.

  46. 46

Sounds like they've got a chip on their shoulder because they are the *Second* Baptist Church. It probably seems like that first Baptist church will never kick off and leave them top dog.

  47. 47

    I live on lesbian St.

  48. 48

Keep gay street!, i'm so tired
    of Homophobiaa

  49. 49

Are you FUCKING serious?! People in the Churchs need to get off their high fucking horses. If it had been "God St." there wouldn't have been a problem. Or even "Straight St." Fuck that. They should be allowed to change the name of the church only if it becomes "Satan Blvd"

  50. 50

repressed mind in the gutter much…?

  51. 51

I bet these stupid people get away with this and the council allow them to re-name the street.

    The world is going nuts!

  52. 52

    Team Second Baptist Church!!

  53. wrog says – reply to this

I've met straight people with "Gay" as their last name.
    Gay doesn't always means homosexual.
    Come on, that's just ridiculous.

  54. 54

Plus it's many times someone's name, which is probably why the street was named. How stupid.

  55. 55

Re: joni – I understand why this is so ridiculous, I really do: It's ludicrous to think that a CHURCH would want to change the name of a street that employs the word "gay". That's completely loony. First of all, it's not like the street was named "Gay Street" after "gay people". Secondly, even if it was, maybe you should have built your church somewhere else.

However, all the anti-religious, disrespectful comments about Religion and Christianity in general need to stop. That's your choice to not participate in organized religion. Other people want to, that's THEIR choice. Just because you choose something else doesn't give you the right to make fun of someone else's decision. ["joni": I know you said you couldn't recall the bible stating anything about homosexuality, so here's a chapter (not to be a prude or act stuck up): 1 Corinthians chapter 6… I think that has a passage or two in it. I don't mean that in a rude way, I just thought you were asking for a passage or something. I'm not baptist though, so you'd have to ask one of them if they use this as well.]

Good for you, people with open-minds. We need more of you in this world, no matter what your opinions are. Let's just remember to discuss in a mature, thoughtful manner (Unless we're talking about annoying people, i.e. The Lohan family. They're just effed up). :) Thanks, kids.

  56. Muse says – reply to this

It's not like it's "Buttsecks Blvd" - jesus these people have got to get a fucking life.

  57. 57

Homophobic asses that they are. Leave the street name as it is. Their views on homosexuals are hopelessly outdated. The rest of society accepts it; so why can't they? They still live in the middle ages.

  58. 58

well you'll be happy to know the city said no because the claim was bias towards religious preference and would be demeaning to alternate lifestyle individuals. however many gays didn't even know that the street existed. go figure

  59. 59

thats pathetic, be offended by gays is one thing but how on earth can u fuckin be offende dof the word??? like thats just fucked, the world is fucked up!
