~I do not care what the critics have to say. I do not agree with the games ever going to China, it should not have happened.
~I fully believe that the US should have boycotted the games. They have done it in the past, they should have done it this time.
~I will not be watching the games this year in my own little protest of the games.

    2nd…. =]

DONT WATCH THE GAMES!!! Join us in a peaceful protest to not tune-into the games. Make this the lowest rating Olympics since the event became televised.

People being kicked out of their homes just to make stadiums for this event should not be condoned.

I actually watched most of it…I feel a strong pang of guilt now. However, I actually woke up at 7 this morning to watch it live..it was amazing, probably the best opening ceremony I have ever seen.

The opening was fabulous! But the lighting of the torch was a little bit of a let down. Sydney and Athens lighting of the torch was much more dramatic, but all in all a good start to the Beijing games

    Re: Big Mama
i feel like i've been MIA… why are people against the games? then i read your comment about people being kick out of their homes to make stadiums?! i'm appalled.

    meh!

Re: joannebck – Yes among other things, that is what they did to "prepare" for these games. I usually don't care about other countries politics and the way their leader chooses to run the country, however it really struck a nerve when I heard it. Then when I read more on what they did to prepare for these games, I was disgusted.

Re: joannebck – For me it is not just people being kicked out of their homes. China is horrible for their human rights. The only reasons the games ever went to China is money and politics. Two things that do not belong in the Olymic Games.

NBC is holding the opening games hostage in the USA until evening. Nevertheless, I will be in front of the TV all night and as jaded as I am, will still probably cry. This kind of ceremony just melts me. I love this stuff!!!!!

  11. 11

americans are against the games because they suddenly care about democracy and human rights! HELLO THEIR TRACK RECORD IS PROBABLY THE WORST IN THE WORLD! Iraq? Cuba? Guatamala?
Try governing a country with 1.3 billion people that has been closed for 60 years and just recently reopened and is now trying to improve itself. China has been previously exploited and colonized by Western and Asian powers so it fucked itself over by thinking it needed communism and now its a little messy.
BUT THE OPENING CEREMONY WAS AMAZING!
Hey Americans who are against the Olympics - read up on Chinese history and politics and maybe you will understand why they are messed up and their government is controlling. I'm not saying its right but GIVE THEM A BREAK.
They have achieved a lot in 20 years and look at how happy they are. People in China are finally happy and you freaks are mumbling about their civil and human rights? Give them some time and kick back and enjoy the games you no good party poopers.

Ive seen some photos already, from YAHOO…AMAZING!! Everyone looks so Happy and proud to be involved with the 2008 OLYMPICS….I wish I was there.

  13. 13

It was a spectacular show, absolutely amazing to watch. I agree with the reviews.

As for those who are protesting, do you really think not watching it is going to make any difference? How many of those protesting knew about the situation in Tibet before China was awarded the games? How many of you were protesting about China's human rights issues before they got the games? If it wasn' t for these games, people would probably still be in the dark about what's happening in China. So it's good for Tibet that China got the games. At last the world has woken up.
And it's not as if the US has such a clean record when it comes to human rights. No country has.

Re: KriSsY – Talking of human rights, if you are an American, do you approve of the aggression against Iraq, Afghanistan, the prison in Guatanamo, the torture, the death penalty in the USA (mostly for black people), hey will you boycott the Olympics if they are ever presented again in USA ? Double standard or just plain jealousy ?

  15. 15

    Re: KriSsY
    um… KriSsY…
China may have many issues with human rights.
But the United States have 100x more issues with human rights and foreign policy. If you are truly feeling compassion for the Chinese people and human rights, why don't you reach out and help or start to understand the people? Do you have any idea how happy Chinese people are????!?!?!?!?! Stop grumbling and acting like a high school girl who is jealous and start educating yourself.

    Re: stanley
I agree with you Stanely, many people in the US only started complaining about the Olympics and starting nitpicking at China ever since they got the job to be the host. I don't think Americans even genuinly care about the people. They are just complaining because of a mix of fear and jealousy. I have travelled extensively through China and many of my friends have gone on exchange there and until you study Chinese history and meet some local Chinese people, you will truly understand the games.
China has many issues with Tibet, and they are wrong. However the Dalai Lama has said that he wants to work with China and both parties have mentioned they have no issues with one another. Things will change with time. Hell, China just opened its doors again. They are pretty f-cking impressive for having just started entering the world again.
Let the Chinese people be happy KriSsY, go educate yourself and watch the games like the rest of the world.

  17. 17

Re: velouria – Good…you are exercising your right to free speech just like we are. Taking advantage of something the citizens of China can't do. Good for you..

  19. 19

Re: stanley – Maybe it will make a difference maybe it wont…I guess we will see. Have fun watching the games.

  20. 20

    Re: Big Mama
i am a citizen of china you doofus.

  21. 21

    Re: Big Mama
oh god i feel so controlled and violated oh no!

  22. 22

    Where can I see it?

  23. 23

Before everyone begins spouting their holier than thou attitude towards the games please take a look at your own country first. ~_~

I liked the bow and arrow lighting of the torch better…i think it was spain? This ceremony was great until the time where the atheletes started coming out - snoozefest! Drumming was awesome tho!

  24. 24

Jesus, you americans really to shut the f*ck up sometimes, start looking at how corrupt and messed up your country is before you make comments like that. Well done for NBC for not showing the ceremony live and holding it back until the evening, what a brave move that was. Ridiculous. I love how its obviously up to the Americans to boycott the games…f*ck off. America is just sh*tting herself that china is fast become the worlds most influential Superpower, thats the long and short of it. If anything you should be glad of the media coverage that the issue is getting now, hopefully things will change

  25. 25

(and by the way the opening ceremony was the most incredibly visually exciting things ive ever witnessed, thankyou BBC HD)

  26. 26

I just think of how they practice so much and beat the performers
and punish their families if they make a mistake.
So as impressive as it was on television, I thought about all the pain
    that went into producing it.

  27. 27

I have read most of the comments, here…and I respect all of your opinions. But, I am still going to watch the opening ceremony and games….as I have, every 4 years, for all of my 43 years.
Peace, among the Nations, will only happen with tolerance, understanding and respect.

  28. 28

mmm can't you write your own review instead of posting a link???

  29. 29

The opening ceremonies were amazing. I can see that China has a desire to change, just by the message they sent in the ceremonies. I am simply amazed.

  30. 30

Aside from all the politcal issues surrounding the Olympics, the opening ceremony was the best. Absolutely brilliant!

  31. 31

Watched the opening ceremonies. Thought they were spectacular & China did a fantastic job.

Big Mama - They kick people out of homes here in America as well when business are built, airports expand, the government wants property, etc.. They call it "eminent domain".

  32. 32

No, I'll go by what I think!!
    Thanks anyway Perez!
