American Tourists Attacked At The Olympics- One Killed in Beijing!

Filed under: Zportz > Sad Sad

beijing08.jpg

What an awful way to kick things off!

According to reports, a knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team and their Chinese tour guide at a tourist site in Beijing on Saturday, the first day of Olympics competition.

One of the victims was killed and one was injured in what's being called a random act of violence.

The attacker then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the tourist attraction, three miles from the main Olympics site.

The midday attack was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in 'tightly controlled China', which has pumped up security measures even more for the Games.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families.

  4. 4

    :O omg !

  5. 5

another reason to hate china and chinese

  6. 6

    omg that is horrible…….

  7. 7

Wow I have nothing against Chinese people… but China DID NOT deserve to have the olympics. I am sorry but CHINA DOES NOT DESERVE the OLYMPICS, and I am basing it on China's politics and not this murder. I think theres going to be a lot of other bad news come for over there.

  8. 8

    Wow… That's sad. Let's hope no more!

  9. 9

    violence is never the answer

  10. 10

    That is soo messed up.

Still trying to figure out why on gods great earth they would hold the olympics in China…

I hope there aren't any other incidents.

The family is in my thoughts!

  11. 11

    Crazy!

  12. 12

hmmmm. China makes most of what the US sells. Even with their archaic and slanted views, I was hoping that the Olympics would be ok there. Let's pray for the families and friends and hope it gets better there.

  13. 13

How can you say "another reason to hate china and chinese" Wow, this kind of random killings happen everyday in the USA. Check the local news in L.A. The people that live in China have no other choice but to be chinese. just because they run there country different then ours does not give us any right to hate them. It's like saying I hate you because you eat dinner on the floor or I hate you because you may be catholic and I am not, etc. Maybe through the olympics some of there views will change. Try not to bash people that just happen to be chinese.

  14. 14

What in the world! How bizzare! Feel sorry for the families involved what a horrible way to start the olympics!

  15. 15

    :O eek. That's sad.

  16. 16

    OMG so very sad…

  17. 17

now the U.S. Volleyball team has a reason to win.

  18. 18

    sick

  19. 19

Everyone should be boycotting the olympics anyway, the chinese government in evil and inhumane. Why would anyone want to support that in any way?

  20. 20

Seems like a random crime, the guy was probly nuts, a rarity.
my father visits china every yr and it is so safe, their is little crime and he loves it, he even found his wife there, she's a sucessful business woman.
So i support the olympics and the athletes!!

  21. 21

So one person dies and i should boycott the oympics, bitch pleazeee, how many die in NY every minute???
dont be pissed cuz you have ur own political views on them, its not about your political bickering its about the games so go hump ur dog or something

  22. 22

This was the first thing I heard, when I woke up this morning. My deepest, sincerest, condolences go to the family.
The man, who died (I believe his name is Todd Buchman…please, excuse me, if I spelled his name wrong) is the father of a previous Olympics women's volleyball player, and the father-in-law of a US volleyball coach. And, the last I heard…his wife was injured, and being treated in a hospital, while their daughter was not harmed. No word on their tour guide, yet…I have no idea if he was harmed, at all.

  23. 23

note: that crazy guy alway attacked the chinese tour guide. so shut the fuck up on how chinese are evil..thats just the impression western government are trying to create.
why are we americans always so narrow minded…
    thats the saddest tragedy.

  24. 24

In case Perez doesn't copy and paste this, as his usual style…I will. I copied this from Yahoo news….Part 1

BEIJING - A Chinese man stabbed the in-laws of the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball coach, killing one and injuring the other while they visited a Beijing tourist site near the main venue where Olympic competitions began Saturday.

The victims were Todd and Barbara Bachman of Lakeville, Minn., parents of former Olympian Elisabeth Bachman, who is married to men's volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee. Bachman's father was killed.

The assailant also stabbed and injured a Chinese tour guide with the Americans. He then committed suicide by leaping from a 130-foot-high balcony of the ancient landmark the Americans were visiting, the 13th-century Drum Tower, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

  25. 25

    Part 2….

Xinhua said the injured tour guide was also a woman, it said.

The volleyball teams is "deeply saddened and shocked," said Darryl Seibel, a USOC spokesman.

He said the two victims "were not wearing apparel or anything that would have specifically identified them as being members of our delegation" or as Americans.

The U.S. Embassy said it believed the attack was an isolated act and not directed at Americans or foreigners, given that the Chinese tour guide was also hurt.

"We don't believe this was targeted at American citizens, and we don't believe this has anything to do with the Olympics," embassy spokeswoman Susan Stevenson said.

  26. 26

    Part 3….

The killing was a rare instance of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.

The attack shortly after noon at the busy tourist site darkened the mood at the games the day after a spectacular opening ceremony had set an ebullient tone after years of nervous buildup.

Beijing's communist leaders are hypersensitive to anything that could take the shine off the games, insisting issues such as China's human rights record, harsh rule in Tibet and ties with Sudan should not be raised at the sports event.

  27. 27

I can't believe people are actually blaming CHINA for this? wtf are these people thinking!!! This kind of murder happens every day in the US and all around the world. I'm not saying this isn't tragic but this is no excuse to lash out at China. Also, notice how Perez pays special attention to this and not the amazing opening ceremony. I can't help but wonder Perez, do you have something against China and its Chinese community?

  28. 28

I hope the families feel our prayers because this was truly sad.

While the opening ceremonies were spectacular, I couldn't help but think about the poor people there kicked out of their neighborhood so the 'nest' could be built, the smog and pollution, and the TONS of money spent on this to impress the world while people from the earthquake still suffer.

An interesting note that was said that made me sit up is when the Chinese team came in and our fabulous (yes, I am being a smart ass) announcers beamed about Chinese being one fifth of mankind! THAT IS ONE FIFTH OF THE HUMAN RACE! DAMN!

The media (and not thanks to U.S. media for delaying us a live broadcast the rest of the world got to see as it happened) sure is not hyping this up and it feels like this news is getting lost in the b.s. SMH…

  29. 29

omg the chinnese are like racist
    x[

Re: societalnorms1 – I don't know where you reside, but…..homes and land are 'taken' quite often, here in the US. It's called Imminent Domain. I have old family friends, who were forced to hand over the deed to their multi-million dollar home and multi-acreage for a measly $150,000. What was that property wanted for? Well, the county claimed that it was for an extension onto a school (which was built just 2 years, beforehand)…but, 5 years later, the land remains undeveloped and overgrown with weeds.
Unfortunately, this happens worldwide….although not frequent enough, nor publicized enough, for people to remember and call their Nation's leaders on the carpet, for it, when election time rolls around.

  31. 31

Re: societalnorms1 – You have to understand that for the millions of Chinese people, this Olympics is much more than just a series of sport events. This is a chance for China to show the world that, after a century of defeat, they're finally standing up again. After all, the Chinese have been waiting for almost a decade for this event! Please remember that the earthquake happened very recently, after the stadiums were built and after all the money was spent, no one could have predicted it.

  32. 32

This is exactly why the USA should have boycotted the Olympics. I feel sad for the deceased man and his family.

  33. 33

Re: Susie_girl – What is so great about the Chinese people showing the world that 'they're finally standing up again'…when the only reason they are standing, is because they don't have a home, chair or bed to rest their feet?! Your logic escapes me.

  34. 34

too fucking sad..George Clooney had the best quote.."The world just got a little less funny

  35. 35

ya know what im pretty sure there is a lot more crime in detroit
that crime was so random, even the chinese tour guide was attacked later bitches im watching the games

  36. 36

just a humble obeservation so don't get all crazy here.

while chinese crimes are considered "slim" the ones that do make headlines are often gruesome and disturbing.

ex: this knife attack, last weeks canadian bus beheading attacker was a chinese immigrant and who could forget the virginia tech massacre again, the perp was chinese as well.

    just sayin

  37. 37

what a spupid thing??? where was police??? or people in china don't know what is it???
PS: sad. and their government is shit!

  38. 38

Chinese assassins are targeting Americans! Perfect ninja behavior - kill on command and then commit suicide to prevent an investigation. Americans need to wake the hell up!!

  39. 39

    Re: ethereal
are you serious? The VA Tech guy was a South Korean. Please research all your information before you make your so called humble observations. Do you see anybody else running around saying, "Oh the perp from the Columbine shooting is white so it is a justified to assume all white people are like that"?

  40. 40

The Olympics was, originally, intended as an event to unify different nations. I think we should look at it as just that. I don't support boycotting the 2008 Olympics. We shouldn't try to make a point by using hate or neglect. That's not how we would educate our children when they do something wrong.

I think you should post more news on the 2008 Olympics, good and bad. This way you don't mislead the kids who read your blogs. If you want to talk about human rights issues then you should offer some links for people to read up on them.

  41. 41

    Re: paulina=dan radcliffe fan #1
what do you mean by "another reason to hate china and chinese"?
without them, you probably wouldnt even have half of the inventions of the world.
    and, crimes HAPPEN.
go to oakland in california, there's shootings almost every single week.
what, are you going to say "another reason to hate africa and africans"?

just because harry potter kissed a chinese girl in "harry potter and the order of the phoenix" doesnt mean you can bash on the chinese.

  42. 42

    Re: ethereal
ha, the Virginia tech massacre was by a Korean guy.
know your shit before you front.

  43. 43

    Re: cOlLeEnRaWkStArx22
if they were racist, would they hurt their own kind?
    As posted by DIJordan,
"We don't believe this was targeted at American citizens, and we don't believe this has anything to do with the Olympics," embassy spokeswoman Susan Stevenson said.

  44. 44

    Re: TRUTHHURTS
    read this,
"We don't believe this was targeted at American citizens, and we don't believe this has anything to do with the Olympics," embassy spokeswoman Susan Stevenson said.

  45. 45

    Re: ethereal
thank you missdee for correcting this "humble observation." the man at Virginia Tech was definitely South Korean. ethereal, your little statement just revealed your streak of racism. EACH PERSON regardless of race, culture, background…etc, is an individual and should be held accountable for their OWN actions. there are a lot of Chinese people out there, and yes, just like any other ethnicity, some of them happen to be crazy. it gives no basis for people to generalize that all Chinese people commit ridiculous crimes.

  46. 46

Wake Up Fat and Happy Americans! We have been blind to the Chinese for many years…… consuming all of their cheaply made goods. We are their slaves! As they become more powerful, the U.S. is becomming weak and the economy is failing. Boycot Chinese made products and STOP shopping at Walmart you assholes!! This "little" stabbing is just the begining. The US media is barely covering this news story. Just image if a Middle Eastern person did this crime….they would be all over it. As usual we have our eye off of the ball. Stop focusing on Iraq and Iran and focus on the Chinese!!!

  47. 47

Re: ethereal – YOU FUCKING RETARD!!!! THE TECH MASSACRE WAS KOREAN!!!!

    DUMB. ASS.

  48. 48

TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT THINK CHINESE GOVERNMENT IS EVIL:

    hmmmm what about BUSH?!?!

    who is more evil?? hmmm……DISCUSS!!

  49. 49

    REALITY CHECK:

AMERICA IS GOING DOWNHILL….DOES THAT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT OUR OWN GOVERNMENT??

how many teenage pregnancies are there in america vs. china?
how much daily crime is committed in america vs. china?
how much debt is in america vs. china?
how many people do drugs in america vs. china?

time to focus on ourselves and clean up our kids….not other countries….

Re: yourazzzuckzbuttermilk – You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but….you will be losing out on incredible experiences, by not traveling to other countries. I have been to quite a few countries, Russia and Germany being just two of them. I even flew into London the day after there was a major bombing..and, I felt completely safe (there is something to be said for getting of of the plane, and seeing their law enforcement armed, to the gills lol).
The way I see it….each of us are going to die, one day. And, if I am going to…I would rather die doing what I love, traveling and experiencing different sights and cultures.

  52. 52

Ok Americans pack your bags and come home if it happens again!!!

  53. 53

Just sayin…. maybe the attacker was one of the 1000 people the olympics displaced for their stadium this year. Every year the olympics shatters lives and here is one more example of how. Pretty shitty when people go around looking for a cause and it is them.
