Grandma Arrested for Driving With 3-Year-Old on Roof for Fun
MARATHON, Fla — Authorities say a grandmother was arrested for driving around the parking lot of a Marathon grocery store with her 3-year-old child sitting on the roof of the car.
Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the Publix store Tuesday and arrested a 54-year-old woman after she was driving around with her three-year-old granddaughter on the roof of her car.
The grandmother was released from jail 15 hours later.
The woman said Thursday she would never let anything hurt her granddaughter. She says she was driving at "snail-speed" and holding the child's leg.
Authorities say the woman told police she was giving the child some air and letting her have fun.
She faces charges of child abuse. The child is back with her mother.

Obviously, she wasn't thinking very clearly. She's old. She probably just thought it would keep her grand daughter occupied, or calm her down, or whatnot. She doesn't deserve to be in jail, she just shouldn't be left alone with young children anymore.

Crazy woman! I'm a 54 yr old grandmother and there's no way I would do something so stupid. She obviously needs some medical intervention. Maybe she's been suffering a series of small strokes or early stage Alzheimers or something. No one in their right minds would do that. It's doubtful she did it with her own children. How awful for the child's parents to realize they can never leave their kids with their mother/mother-in-law again. Very scary and sad for the entire family.

FFS…granted, she was going at a 'snails pace', but, what would have happened if she had to slam on the brakes? I know that I have had to, from time to time, in parking lots…which actually made the packages shift and slide, in the back of my vehicle.
So, her holding onto her grandchilds leg, would NOT prevent that child from sliding off of the roof, under those circumstances…..it would just mean that the little one would be hanging upside down, banging against the drivers side door, with her little scalp scraping the pavement. All the while, her grandmother would probably be panicking, and confusing the gas pedal with the break.
That women needs to be put away….either a prison or a mental institution.

K, first of all, 54 is not old. It's older, but it's not senile. She's old enough to know better, but not so old she could say she'd lost touch with reality and didn't know better. Putting a toddler on the roof of a car and then driving around is just stupid. The kid could have fallen off.
