Mateo's So Hippy Dippy

Filed under: Baby Blabber > Matthew McConaughey

Boho mania!

In an interview with CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Matthew McConaughey revealed that he and baby momma Camila Alves kept the placenta from the July birth of son, Levi AND the family plans to plant it in an orchard.

Apparently, placenta land fertilization is a tradition in several cultures.

Wow. You learn something new every day!

Mateo said, "It's going to be in the orchards and it's going to bear some wonderful fruit. When I was in Australia, they had a placenta tree that was on the river … and all the placentas of all that tribe, all that clan, whatever aboriginal tribe that was, all the placentas went under that one tree and it was this huge behemoth of just health and strength. This tree was just growing taller and stronger above the rest of Mother Nature around it. It was gorgeous."

It also looks like McConaughey and Alves have adopted some unconventional approaches to parenting. At one month old they've started introducing baby Levi to the "sights and the sounds" of the world — including a John Mellencamp concert and the paparazzi madness of LA's Robertson Boulevard!

"You're never told in our house, 'Shh, Levi is sleeping.' No. Get used to the ambiance. Come with us. That's how I was raised," says the bongo playing daddy.

Fascinating.

Wouldn't it be funny if Levi grew up to be a totally tightly wound nerdy boy instead of free spirited earth child?

Re: lilyinatx – ok i take that back i should have read all of it. but still….why can't he come up w/ his own news? why report everyone else's?

  11. 11

    He's a fucking weirdo

  12. 12

I just hope he provided that precious baby with ear protection at the John Mellencamp concert! A newborn's eardrums are quite fragile. He may not need to worry himself about "the ambiance" if he damages his tot's hearing unnecessarily :( ((

  13. 13

moron. at least the kid will get lots of drugs from his stupid hippy dad

  14. 14

Dude! I've never even been to a John Mellencamp concert lol XD

Ok a 2 year old with a bottle is no big deal I am a mommy myself, but taking an infant out in public to a concert and that papparazi nonsense is horribly inconsiderate of not only the infant but other people. Babies are not little adults they are developing and that kind of noise is unecessary there is a reason that people stay at home with infants they are fragile and very needy the first year of their life.

  16. 16

hahaha yes! that would be funny….and he should be careful, it happens all too often that when a parent tries to push a child in one direction…the child runs in the exact opposite direction….

  17. 17

Wow. you know it's bad when my first reaction is "well at least he didn't eat it like tomkat."

but still… can he not just be normal. lord.

  18. 18

well at least his name isnt miller lite =]

  19. 19

So he ain't planning on eating it like Tom Cruise did (or didn't he…).

  20. 20

    eww thats fuckin gross

What if the only reason Mama's have PPD is because our bodies need all the hormones in our placenta's after the exaustion and great transition of birth? What if every woman had her placenta encapsulated instead of a bottle of pills? I think deppression would be on the decline, and some greedy pharmacuetical companies would be out the massive profit they make off of our ignorance. So tell someone today that Placenta Encapsulation is awesome! All mammals eat thier placentas! It is just so useful, I only took about a third of my capsules after my son's birth and still have 2/3 of a jar in my freezer. I take them every now and then when feeling emotionally drained, and I'm saving at least half for menopause later in life. Patricia, my wonderful friend+healer+ teacher=midwife, told me how when women hit menopause they take hormone medication that is derived from pregnant horse pee! I always tell women about that when they say placenta consumption is disgusting! This is medicine made by our bodies, for our bodies!

  22. 22

I am sorry but this is just disturbing. I am a nurse and work in ob/gyn and placenta's are not pretty and I have no clue why someone would want to plant the thing! YUCK!

  23. 23

We should all eat our placentas! Every woman should have her placenta encapsulated to take as medicine! Wake up people! The placenta was the babies first mother and should be honored and respected!! Our bodies need the hormones in the placenta!

yeah, i'm hmong and in my culture if you bury the placenta infront of your door step, it's a way of finding your way back after you die. i mean now a days, we're a little westernized, but back in my parents day it happened a lot.

  25. 25

Placenta's are beautiful!!!! People like this obgyn nurse are why woman have lost thier trust and respect for birth as a sacred thing to be honored and respected! People like Kellbell616 are why women let thier placentas be thrown away every day!! WOMEN OF EARTH TAKE BACK YOUR BIRTHS! DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT BIRTH ISN'T AMAZING AND EMPOWERING!! YOUR PLACENTA IS WONDERFUL MEDICINE, HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE BEAUTY IN WHAT THE PLACENTA STANDS FOR! THAT WAS YOUR BABIES HOME! yOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE ANTI-DEPRESSANTS BECAUSE YOU AND YOUR BABY HAVE MADE EVERYTHING YOU NEED!

  26. 26

When my kid was born, we maintained a noisy household and took her out to restaurants. Usually, she slept through most things, including me vacuuming. No, we didn't take her to a loud concert and I would hope Baby Levi had some ear plugs.
My in laws had a completely quiet household. You couldn't make a sound if he was trying to nap. While our kid is pretty mellow, their kid is pretty neurotic. The world is noisy, kids might as well get used to it early.

  27. 27

We would have left the placenta intact and done a complete lotus birth, leaving the placenta attached to baby until it is dry and he kicks it off on his own, but I wanted my midwife to make me medicine. She did just that! A few days after the birth at one of many home visits, my midwife brought me a jar full of my encapsulated placenta! Just in time too, because I was having extaordinary mood swings, and afterpains. Within a few days of taking my placenta, I started to feel much better. I have struggled with depression in the past and this was much better than any ati-deppression medication I have ever taken. What an amazing organ! And what a shame it is tossed in the garbage everyday in hospitals! I think every woman should have her placenta encapsulated. It should just be a part of the birthing process. Our bodies are making thier own medicine! Amazing medicine! I know my body and my baby made this medicine just for me. I was immediatley soothed by the medicine, and my baby blues ended within three days of taking my placenta. My energy started coming back, my milk came in full force, the afterpains faded, the bleeding got much lighter, my irritabity went away, and I was able to enjoy my new baby. My son even seemed calmer and happier after I stared taking my encapsulated placenta. No wonder animals eat thier placenta's immediately after birthing!

why dont people keep their child home for the 1st 6 weeks to let their immunities build??

  29. 29

I agree with him totally…not the placenta part..the other…When my daughter was born, her doctor told me not to quiet our world…Use the vacuum, play the stereo, have the tv on, she would learn to sleep thru it all and she did…She went to her first movie when she was 4 1/2 weeks old and slept thru the whole thing…She went to concerts…She danced at Ceasar's in Vegas at 2 AM when she was 2 in the disco, they had a 21 year old age thingy to get in, but they let her in…She traveled and did things most adults dreamed of…And she is a wonderful woman now…She always behaved when she was little…And if she did cry or act up, which rarely happened, but she was a baby or toddler mind you, I took her out, I did not let her disprupt other people…She went on her first cruise at 2…It is a good thing…Any of you first time parents…Do not be afraid to take your baby out…Of course be careful and courteous to others…But show your child the world…as much as you can…They will be more rounded, more tolerant of other people and cultures…It is a good thing…

    Douche chills

  31. 31

Why do people cut cords so early and deny thier babies the preciuos immune filled blood being provided by the placenta through the umbilicle cord? Why do women throw away thier placentas when they could encapsulate them and recover quickly and happily from birth(and later in life menopause!)? Why do so many women choose to have thier babies cut out of them istead of expierancing the awe and empowerment of natural birth? Why doesn't everyone know that birth can be beautiful and orgasmic?

  32. 32

I think that David Carridine and Barbara Seagull talked about eating hers.

  33. 33

I love the "Photo Enforced"-sign in the background. Hahaha!!!

  34. 34

    funny?
    more like hilarious….
i'm thinking his kid will make alex keaton look like alec baldwin

  35. 35

I think its completely cool as hell. And I'm a conservative libertarian. I just think Mac got a really refreshing way to look at the world, at his kid, at parenting. They're both going to be really fun, caring parents that I'm sure will raise a great son. I can't wait to watch him grow up.

Beats the hell out of zombie pod children like Suri.

    Re: bleepandblorg

OK, you made your point - about ten posts ago. You ate your placenta; you wanna cookie or something? Oh wait - nope, I'm sure you'd rather have placenta stir fry with a side of umbilical sauce. Planting it is one thing, eating it is psedo-canabilistic . Animals made eat them, but they also eat their own crap. If God wanted us to eat things that came out of our bodies, then we would have the natural urge to do so - not the natural urge to dispose of them. There is a reason shit stinks.

  37. 37

"Wouldn't it be funny if Levi grew up to be a totally tightly wound nerdy boy instead of free spirited earth child?"
Isn't that how it usually is? Kids grow up to be the exact opposite of what their 'rents really want?!

  38. 38

You wish!! You know Levi is going to grow up in an accepting and nurturing environment. And there will be boundries set when the time is right. Let the new parents enjoy this experience!

  39. 39

Re: ilonarose – Oh so you're one of those people who takes infants to the movie theatre. Wow, never thought someone would actually admit to it

  44. 44

Man, he smokes some damn good weed.

  45. 45

Like, I've heard how people save placentas for genetic purposes (kid has leukemia and stem cells are extracted from frozen placenta to heal kid), but this is new to me. If they like it, they should def go for it… :D

  46. 46

I'm cool with the free spirited stuff, but when you're parents are that liberal, how are you going to rebel?!

  47. 47

Alot of cultures believe (or you can call it superstition) that burying the placenta not only causes growth but also protects the child so that it will grow up strong. There was a fear that if someone got ahold of the placenta, they could curse the baby's life. Some people who practice voodoo also believe this.

On the baby/noise thing, I once saw a couple bring a tiny baby, maybe 3 months old, to a fireworks show, right up on the front lines. And it didn't even cry! That seemed a bit much for me.

  48. 48

I was just putting the information about my placenta encapsulation on here because so few women know about this amazing medicine! no i don't want a cookie! I want women to not have to suffer from Post Pardum Deppression when they don't have too! I want to inform people so that they know they have an option! When a woman take hormone replacement therapy the pills they take derived from pregnant horse piss! What is more disgusting, some thing your body made for you or consuming another creatures pee? Encapsulated placenta has no taste, it's just a little capsule and it works amazingly! And for the person who said something about humans not wanting to eat it, that's just conditioning, the first humans did eat thier raw placentas! The placenta is full of amazing hormones and nutrients just like breastmilk!(something that comes from your body that is surely ment to be eaten) That's all I wanted to say…..just so people know!

You need to still live your life even with a baby. When my girl was a baby she would wake up in the stroller all over the place, the mall, ross, albertsons, whatever. One time she was napping and I was babysitting some other kids so they were napping too, the neighbor used a jackhammer, all the kids woke up screaming, but not my girl. l
