China's Censorship Sucks

You gotta have balls of steel to be a journalist in China.
According to a new report, several Chinese reporters covering the stabbing death of a U.S. volleyball coach's father-n-law had their notebooks and at least one tape recorder confiscated after a news conference held by Team U.S.A. Volleyball. The players had been discussing the impact of the murder on the team.
Government confiscation of notebooks and equipment is a common occurrence for Chinese journalists covering protests or other 'undesirable activities', but it was supposedly the first time this has happened at an Olympic venue.
Also, the Chinese appear so intent on painting nothing but rosy pictures around the Games. The word Olympics is not uttered anywhere in the local coverage of the U.S. volleyball coach's murdered father-in-law.
Reports center on the death of "an American tourist" without any mention that the 'tourist' was in Beijing for the Olympics.
We give thanks every day that we have the freedoms that we do in our country.

China gives me the creeps. They demolished thousands of homes in anticipation of the Olympics. Leaving elderly, disabled people homeless. They killed tens of thousands of stray dogs. Good look buying a toy that isn't made in China. And for the morons comparing the US to China, bullshit. Did you see the article about how they used the voice of a child that they considered ugly and had a cuter child lip-sync for the opening ceremonies. Seriously! Have we forgotten about that little plague called the Patriot Act? They can legally go against the 5th Amendment and confiscate any computer you have if you're coming into the country, even if you're an American citizen and hold it up to a year.

I'm sorry, but doesn't the United States have photo censorship rules on the Americans who die overseas because of The War on Iraq? I'm not trying to open a can of worms or start a political debate or anything of that nature, but for Perez to claim, "[we] give thanks every day that we have the freedoms that we do in our country" he really should think what those "freedoms" really are before he judges another country's media's censorship, especially when the United States are just as strong in some respect as others. I'm not trying to say Canada's are perfect, either. All I am trying to say is people in glass housees, pots calling kettles, etc etc.
And people wonder why I have boycotted the Olympics this year. It is really hard because I have always been a proud watcher, but not if China has them. I feel sorry for the Chinese people. A government is supposed to represent its people. In China's case, it does no such thing. Its also unfortunate that China is referred to as a "Communist" country, because that is not what Communism is.

The USA isn't perfect, but please note, we're only 230 years old! We've accomplished an enormous amount in so short a time. Sure we have 'secret' censorship, but we also have public libraries, the right to type on here whatever we want, the right to differing opinions and the right to simply BE different. Can we do better? Sure - it ain't the Garden of Eden, but it's a great thing we have going here in America! (Yes, I'm liberal, and proud to be an American - don't complain if you don't vote and be the difference you want to see in the world!)
