Russian-born, Texas-raised Nastia Liukin won the women’s gymnastics all-around gold medal on Friday in Beijing.
Nastia came from behind on the final two rotations to clinch the top prize!
The elegant Liukin joins Carly Patterson and the iconic 1984 gold medalist Mary Lou Retton in the pantheon of American all-around gold medalists.
Nastia has Olympic greatness in her blood. Her dad is an Olympic gold medalist!
Liukin's teammate and Olympics roommate, Shawn Johnson of Iowa, won the silver.
Woo hoo! USA in the top two spots!
China's Yang Yilin won the bronze. She's probably 11 years old!

Also, did any of you notice how unfairly everyone else was treated compared to China? I know it's being hosted there…but it's still unfair. The Russian's didn't do too bad and they were treated poorly and I'm sure there were some unfair U.S.A cuts too.

I was glued to my tv yesterday watching the gymnastics.I chewed my nails,I ate chips,I cheered out loud,I cried.What a true fun event to watch.

i was SO happy when she and shawn took Gold and Silver. I loooooove her, it's like watching ballet mixed with gymnastics, she's so graceful. not to mention it's amazing that her dad is a russian gold medalist.

Nastia deserved it. Shawn is cute and has that " All American " appeal that tends to make people think shes the best thing to happen to gymnastics this year. Nastia is far more the better gymnast and she derserved the gold. Shawn was good on her last performance on the mats but couldnt overcome Nastia's over all.
Now what about womens beach volleyball? There on a winning streak haha.
You can tell Shawn was PISSED. She expected to win gold before she even entered the arena. Sucks to be full of yourself, Shawn!

Nastia's gymnastics is so beautiful to watch!! She is so graceful. I stayed up until 1:30 in the morning to watch the whole thing even though I went online and found out the results. My ass will be dragging at work today! But so worth it!! GO USA!!
They're all 16, it's the min age requirement.
Chinese always look 10 years younger than they really are. We were giving my roommate a hard time, because his girlfriend, who was 18, looked 8. We used to give her over sized cookies because she'd eat them with both hands like a squirrel. I miss her, she was awesome.

OH MY GOD I WAS SOOO HAPPY WITH THESE FINAL SCORES! nastia works very hard and has been doing gymnastics longer than shawn…plus she is a more elegant than shawn and looks beautiful when in a gymnasium. shawn is very powerful and strong but you can tell has a lot to learn (her cross step habit needs to go-she will be amazing) so i think its fitting that she got silver. next olympics…she could DEF. get gold. will nastia compete in the next olympics? she will be 22

Anyway.. i'm so proud of our American girls. Shawn is from my town… and though we would have loved for her to win the Gold (The judging was SHIT for BOTH Shawn & Nastia)…. we are so proud of her. And, she's young.. she can come back in 4 years and get her gold!!!!!
You couldn't meet a more down-to-earth girl than Shawn… She's not affected by the publicity and notoriety.

Yaaay! I am so happy for her. This was the perfect ending - Nastia with gold and Shawn with silver. I was afraid the Chinese were gonna win with all that weird scoring, but it all worked out in the end. She looked so beautiful and the performance was amazing and I am so damn hyphy off our women's gymnastics team whoo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey, you've gotta give credit to the Yilin too. Imagine 2 billion people counting on you to win a medal. She performed well (though obviously not as well as Shawn and Nastia). And it's not fair to doubt her age just ’cause she's small; the Chinese (and most other Asians) are known to be built smaller than Europeans and Americans, etc.
Now where are all of the posters from other entries who were writing "USA are sore losers"? Slithering away with your tails between your legs? The underage China team can cheat their way to a group gold, but once they were broken apart as individuals, they sucked hole.
Nastia was in the movie Stick It! It's a gymnastics movie and its fuckin hilarious! Nastia plays a bitch tho.

Re: Diceman – uh yeah, Nastia's parents moved to New Orleans and then to the Dallas area from Russia when Nastia was about 3, and opened their own gym. Nastia's lived most of her life in Texas, it's not like we 'stole' her from Russia.
I still think Shawn deserved to win, Shawn does harder tricks and her score on beam was not fair at all. Nastia deserved a higher score on vault too. And the Romanian gymnast who did fantastic on beam was ripped off. I love gymnastics, but I hate the scoring system

The judges were being really unfair with her judging but then got a LOT better later on.

All your comments about the Chinese gymnasts cheating are ridiculous. Even if the girls were underage, they still won, fair and square. In fact, Americans should be ashamed of themselves because they lost to athletes who are much younger, and had less experience. I do agree both teams are good, but in the end, there can only be one champion. The Chinese girls sacrificed a lot more to be where they are today. They do it for their country, not for themselves, unlike the Americans. The Chinese and American cultures are different; people should not judge blindly when they do not have all their facts straight.

Shawn should have won. She's the better athlete in general as well as He from China. Nastia Liukin is a tiny little girl who needs a hamburger and to learn how to properly execute her bars routine. Did anyone else see her horrific Olympic qualification routines? Chelsea Memmel was MUCH better. Nastia is a youngster that should NOT have even made it to the Olympics. Lucky for her, she had a good night. All in all, Congratulations go out to her anyway. She had an on-night and deserved to win that one time. Good job, Shawn and Chelsea, you'll both win Worlds over the next few years anyway. And, hey: Perez, you ought to congratulate the Chinese gymnast too. Asshole.
