Mom: Boy Wrapped in Toilet Paper, Set on Fire in Prank

SALT LAKE CITY — The mother of an 11-year-old boy who was wrapped in toilet paper and then accidentally set on fire says the whole thing started as prank by her son's 13-year-old brother.

"It was not intentional," Renee Morgan said during a news conference Tuesday at the University of Utah Hospital, where Tyler Morgan was in critical condition. "It was kids just playing and being kids."

Tyler and his brother Chris were playing a game with a group of neighborhood friends at an Orem park Monday when they wrapped Tyler in toilet paper against a pole, said Capt. Ned Jackson of Orem's public safety department.

They then wrapped more toilet paper around four poles in a pavilion to make a wrestling ring, Jackson said. Jackson said Tyler was a willing participant up to that point.

But one of the boys' friends used a lighter to set some of the toilet paper on fire, underestimating how quickly it would burn, Renee Morgan said.

When the fire began to spread, Chris Morgan began to try to stomp it out and accidentally set his foot on fire and lit the paper wrapped around his brother, their mother said.

Tyler Morgan suffered burns on 14 percent of his upper body, including his face, neck and ears.

He is being treated at University Hospital.

He already has a friend nearby — Bridger Hunt, who was critically injured July 24 by an exploding homemade firework.

Bridger Hunt's mother, Mindy Carter-Shaw, said that Tyler had called and e-mailed her daily to ask about her son's condition and visited him at Primary Children's Medical Center, which is next door to where Tyler is being treated.

"These two boys are inseparable. Bridger and Tyler have been best friends for years. They live around the corner from each other," Carter-Shaw said. "I can't believe it. This is unreal — unbelievable."

The Morgans' mother said the boy who lit the fire has been apologetic.

"Kids are going to be kids," she said. "They are going to experiment."

It sounds like an accident and little boys do crazy stuff like that she is right. I know alot of you non parents are gonna leave crazy child abuse and assault comments.

    6. 6

It was a dumb thing to do. Kids shouldn't be playing with fire. But it was still an accident, nevertheless. The kids had absolutely no intention of hurting him.

    7. 7

THIS IS BEYOND SICK AND TWISTED.

    8. 8

      Terrible! Poor Kid!!

    9. 9

    12. 12

Re: Arshe – I HAVE KIDS AND YES THEY DO CRAZY STUFF BUT IT'S THE MOTHER'S LACK OF CONCERN FOR THIS BEHAVIOUR THAT IS FRIGHTENING! WHEN ONE OF HER KIDS GET KILLED I DON'T THINK SHE'LL TAKE IT SO LIGHTLY!

    13. 13

Re: Arshe – Your name is perfect for you. Just remove the "h".

    14. 14

Re: Sir Boo – No kids for you 'eh? I can see my kids pulling a prank like this. Sans lighter of course, but hey…they can find those lying on the street can't they?
Maybe she should keep her 11 and 13 year old children locked in the home so things like this won't happen anymore?
Better yet, why don't you go take care of them for her since you're so willing to judge?

    15. 15

Im sorry. But thats f***ed up. Kids will be kids? experimenting with lighting eachother on fire? Yeaaaaah like obviously the kids didnt know anybetter. The parents should like show them the seriousness. !

That was probably the poor ladies response when some idiot reporter asked if she was gonna have all the little kids put in jail. Maybe we should all put our kids in plastic bubbles? Oh wait I forgot we do already they are little fat asses propped in front of video games all day.

    17. 17

      thats the dumbest shit
      ive prbly ever read.!

    19. 19

      WOW!
      thats horrible!

    20. 20

Re: rabidparadise – A prank like this…your kids would wrap each other up in toilet paper like mummies and set one another on fire. Great parenting skills you have if you see your kids doing "a prank like this." Stupid bitch.

    21. 21

      ……..wow……..
      ……..fire……………
      ……..no good………….
      Queztion:..what doez everyone think
about the little girl thatz mizzing in Orlando, florida?
I think her mom beat her to death and buried her…
she did borrow a shovel from the neighbor that day>?
      zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    22. 22

When I was kid, my friend and I went to the woods behind our neighborhood with a canteen. The neighborhood was under construction and they were clearing the woods so there were always burn piles out there. We built a little 'campfire' and were just out yakking and having a good time. Then the fire died down. My friend emptied the canteen onto the fire.

What is interesting about this story is…the canteen was full of gasoline we had filched from our garage. We were trying to rebuild the fire! Naturally, we nearly killed ourselves. We were lucky.

The point is…we were good kids with good parents who did a dumb thing. My parents and hers were not neglectful, not redneck jerry springer wannabes, they were college educated, middle class folks with normal kids. We just did a dumb thing. It happens. Get over self-righteous selves.

    23. 23

When I was twelve and my step brother eleven, we were playing with fire in the shed and nearly burned it and ourselves but we were okay. We knew that playing with fire was dangerous but we never thought anything bad would happen to us and guess what? - a lot of kids are just as fucking stoopid as we were. Kids think nothing bad will happen to them or they just don't think at all. Maybe we should just wrap them in cotton wool so nothing bad (or good) will ever happen to them.

It is something more than "kids will be kids", but the boy may not have intended to burn his friend. These boys sound like they haven't been properly supervised. When these boys were "playing" like this with smaller actions and their moms never said, "that is stupid! someone is going to get hurt, you're grounded.", instead they ditzily said, "oh, boys will be boys". They never learned the consequences of their actions. Boys do dumber and dumber things. Parents need to teach their kids not to play with fire, jump of balconies, ect….

    25. 25

Re: ann illusion – I AGREE WITH WHAT YOUR SAYING, THE POINT IS YOUR LEARNED FROM YOUR MISTAKE! THE MOTHER IN THIS CASE ,WITH HER ATTITUDE, HER KIDS WON'T!

    26. 26

Does anyone remember when kids used to play hide and seek and tag for fun. Now we wrap people in toilet paper and burn them, what is going on?

    27. 27

      I agree this mother seems a little…unconcerned.

I hope the kids were scared enough that maybe they will learn the lesson.

    28. 28

Okay bacially the women said its okay because kids are being kids. ARE YOUR STUPID!!!!!!!!!! How is that an okay thing to do. My kids will know from the day they are born that fire is bad She is stupid and she needs to be locked up if thats that attitude she has Because then what more is going to happen? If she just going to let her kids play with knives because there just little kids having fun? SOMETHING need to happen to that MOTHER. She is stupid and it make me cringe to read what she just said.

UM hello your son now has burns all over his face and ur saying its okay he will never be the same and he could potentially die. im not saying he willl but it could happen…..

    29. 29

It sounds like an accident caused by stupidity.

    30. 30

Too bad those kids are freaking stupid. Maybe their mothers should have taught them never to play with fire. Damn, I burned myself in the ear listening to the butane in a lighter when I was 4, I singed my ear, and never played with a lighter again till I was old enough to be responsible with it. My baby sister, whose 10 now, burnt herself on the stove when she was 3 after we told her not to touch because it was hot. Needless to say, she stopped touching the fucking stove. Where the hell are parents these days really? They argue "oh kids will be kids" while they shell out thousands of dollars to get their kids fixed after they fuck up.

    31. 31

When I was a kid (about their age) I had a friend who was playing around with a lighter and tape, setting it on fire. He accidentlly burnt the house down.

    32. 32

      FOOL!

    33. 33

how can she say that….look what happend to your son dumbass!

    34. 34

THE FREAKIN KID DIDN'T TAKE THE LIGHTER TO THE BOY WRAPPED IN TOILET PAPER!
      Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeez.
You guys are ALL making it out to be that THIS was intentional and the mom is throwing her arms up and saying "oh well"
if THAT were the case then judge all you want!
shouldn't have had a lighter, but SHIT HAPPENS.
      dannngggg.
Totally out of her control and she knows that.
      Fuckin chillllll.

    35. 35

yea, let's experiment with fire! because it's not dangerous or potentially fatal, or anything.

you play with fire, eventually you're gonna get burned. HA!

    36. 36

      Re: krazihottkelli/bitchygrl – you're a moron.

    37. 37

Re: ann illusion – yea, but you thought you were using water. they KNEW they were lighting PAPER wrapped around a HUMAN on FIRE. that's not an accident, that's moronic.

    38. 38

      Crazy Americans!

    40. 40

Ah no thats not kids being kids its stupid parents not teaching their kids how to act ans be responsible! Fuck I have an 18 year old and he's never done anythinglike this why? because he was taught right from wrong. I blame the parents teach you kids how to act.

    41. 41

not good, the children should have learned about fire safety. Seems like bad mistake to make.

    42. 42

My twin boys just turned 13, and I have to watch these goof balls and their goof ball friends ever single second. Boys are reckless as all get out, and to blame the Mother is not fair. Boys will find danger in everything, and sometimes parents look the other way for a minute and things happen. I pray this little boy is well soon, and is able to get the skin repaired.

    43. 43

Re: elizard – Must be great to be so perfect. With your use of the English language, one can assume you might have slipped up with a few of your parenting skills.

    44. 44

That's unfortunate, though older children should know better than "playing" with dangerous things. When we were kids we were always lectured against doing stupid shit like that. It's a shame for kids nowadays that their parents can't spend enough time with them as parents in previous generations and be better at parenting. The economy sucks so much that nearly everyone has to be a 2-3 income family so a lot of "parenting" is going by the wayside.

    45. 45

This is why people who live outside America think you guys are all morons

    46. 46

      Re: Indiasoup
      go shit yourzelf fukhead
      zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
takez one to effen know one…u fuk
      zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    47. 47

      Sigh.

    48. 48

WTF is this woman thinking!?!?!?!?! Since this kind of shit happened before, why did she think it was okay to leave those boys alone???????? I watch kids those ages, and I have to say that they do NOT "experiment" with fire and explosives. WHERE WAS THE MOTHER DURING ALL OF THIS??????????????????

    49. 49

WHY WOULD KIDS THAT YOUNG BE PACKIN' A LIGHTER? I DO NOT ACCEPT THAT "KIDS WILL BE KIDS", WHEN IT COMES TO THIS KIND OF "PREVENTABLE" ACCIDENT. PARENTS ARE FAILING AT TEACHING THEIR CHILDREN THE FUNDAMENTALS, BECAUSE CHILDREN DO NOT HEAR PEOPLE THAT THEY DO NOT RESPECT.
      :l

    50. 50

      Re: Birdygirl
So maybe I was typing fast and did not proof read my post! And for your info my son just graduated with honors from high school and has been accepted to UC Berkeley. Oh and he has never set one of his friends on fire! Your right kids do do gooball things but come on I'm not the only one that feels the parents are to blame that's the problem with this world parents aren't teaching their kids right from wrong then they'll just blame the kid.

    51. 51

For the record, I think THIS mother may in fact suck…but let me ask you this.

How many people here when you were a kid (I'm not asking about your kids OK, I'm asking about YOU) NEVER:

      1 - disobeyed their parents
2 - sneaked out of the house
      3 - giggled "quick! she's not looking!"
4 - played with something they were told not to (not necessarily fire, just something they were explicitly told not to play with)
      5 - here's a good one - skipped school

OK, now…where were your perfect parents? Do you blame THEM for what you did?

Kids don't always do what they are told, don't always stay within sight, don't always obey. Since when do the parents get the blame for everything a child does - in their sight or out of it?

Once again, I think THIS mother is probable is an ass, but just think about yourselves and your childhood for a moment and you might just see how something bad can happen in the blink of an eye when kids decide NOT to do what they are told.

    52. 52

when did kids get so dumb?? i dont remember being retareded as a child…
