Phelps Steals Tropic's Thunder

Michael Phelps isn't only kicking asses in the pool.
It looks like Golden Boy is rocking the movie business too!
According to new reports, Phelps' quest for his record-tying 7th gold medal on Friday probably kept people home, glued to their TVs and NOT in the movie theater!
Early estimates show that biz was pretty shitty at the movies on Friday.
The expected #1 movie of the weekend, Tropic Thunder, only pulled in $8.25 million. The movie is expected to make less money this weekend than Pineapple Express did last weekend, and Tropic Thunder has some HUGE superstars in it!
Coming in second on Friday was the animated Clone Wars, which made $6.65 million.
Olympics are definitely edging out other TV and movies for us these days.
We can't wait to see if Phelps will win an 8th gold medal!

We will know if this report is factually solid when the overnight tv ratings are in. "You" have to be careful and not trust everything that you read.
Oh, well…..the 'movie makers' will just have to wait another week, or so, when the Olympics are over…to make up the supposed lost revenue. Or, they can just rely on the DVD rentals/sales. I really don't care.
The television stations know better than to show new programs, while the Olympics are on…so, why don't these movie makers know?
Poor timing, and mis-judgment, if you ask me. Do they honestly think that ANY movie can replace the general publics fascination with an event that only occurs every four years?

Oh, perfect body Phelps will get his 8th gold medal - you can count on it. It's refreshing that attention was diverted to true skills rather than artificial, mundane movies this weekend. I must add, Mark Spitz was even hotter.

…And this isn't a once-in-4-years experience for the public. It's once-in-36-years for the public. Pin-up poster boy Spitz received his 7 gold medals in 1972. (9 gold medals if you include the 2 he won at the 1968 Olympics). The movies can take a breather. They make enough $ off us.

I love Michael Phelps and for the first time in my life, I like a male star primarily for talent rather than his dashing good looks. Amazing swimmer and seems like an amazing guy. Plus, I love watching how proud his mom is of him. It's so nice. GO MICHAEL PHELPS!!!
Perez, you magnificently ignorant SLUT! The target demographic for 'Tropic Thunder' is males 18-49, which is the EXACT demo that does *NOT* watch the Olympics on TV. Television ratings for the Olympics are driven by women and males who do not traditionally watch televised sports. I still love you Perez, but please get yourself educated on some very basic TV industry trends.

As for his teeth….I had spent countless hours researching alternative dentistry and just forked over $5,000 for my son's orthodontia treatment, so I think that I am justified in saying….Phelps' dental work (i.e. teeth formation) is not the problem. It is his jaw and mouth formation. He can't help that the corners of his mouth reaches 'toward his ears', when he smiles. It is what it is.
As for your hypothesis, about his mother….she raised her children, the best that she could, when her husband/their father deserted them. How can you possibly insinuate that she is waiting to cash in on his success? I don't know what type of relationship you have with YOUR mother…but, that is not the case with ALL mothers.

Spitz could accept no payment whatsoever, not even a swim suit. Phelps got a million dollars from Speedo for tying Spitz's record, (although there is no way he actually won the hundred fly — look at the photo finish, look at how Phelps is still pushing water forward, e.g., still swimming, when the Serbian swimmer has already stopped — clearly, technology can go wrong, or even be rigged)… But whatever, Spitz got nothing, nada, zip for his efforts. No money, no endorsements, zero $. The athletes now are like machines, with other machines to measure their every waking muscle recovery or nutritional need, and with science and technology to help create them, all at work in a very profitable business. Go look through You Tube for Spitz's old swims, and see for yourself what it looked like then. On all counts, no comparison. No doubt Phelps is the greatest swimming machine currently, but maybe if Spitz could have earned a living at swimming, let alone earned enough money to live on for for the rest of his life, he would have swam even harder, and for a lot more years. But he wasn't a professional, like they are now.
It might also have something to do with the fact that our economy only keeps getting shittier and maybe people can't afford to go spend $10 on a movie ticket, plus popcorn, soda, etc, especially if the movie is only so-so. C'mon, it's no Dark Knight. watching the Olympics is free :]

Re: DIJordan – Re the herpes, after the Athens Olympics and the DUI case (Nov. 2004), Phelps hit a mental wall - he was hardly swimming and did not compete in the Worlds, etc. This is when he went to Ann Arbor. While there, he became more sexually active. A women's group at U of M maintained an online list of camous men who were known to be herpes carriers (it required more than one report before they would put a name on the list). Phelps ws reported by multiple women as the man they suspected infected them with herpes simplex. Phelps of course denied it.

My comments re: Mother Phelps were relating to an announcement that she is negotiating a book deal, and that she has been asked to go on shows such as Oprah, etc. Nothing WRONG with than, per se, but still it reminds one that the lure of lucre is very strong. And as for my own mother, I wish I could say whether she would or would not be like Ms. Phelps, however, she died when I was 7 months old in a chain-reaction car accident.
