Robert Downey Junior Tells DC Comics to Eff Off!

Filed under: Film Flickers > Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Junior didn't hold back when it came to the subject of The Dark Knight in a recent interview.

After telling the interviewer that Iron Man 2 will be a cool, fun movie, he let it rip when they touched on the topic of Batman.

He says:

"My whole thing is that that I saw 'The Dark Knight'. I feel like I'm dumb because I feel like I don't get how many things that are so smart. It's like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I'm like, 'That's not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.' I loved 'The Prestige' but didn't understand 'The Dark Knight'. Didn't get it, still can't tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I'm like, 'I get it. This is so high brow and so f–king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.' You know what? F-ck DC comics. That's all I have to say and that's where I'm really coming from."

Guess the folks at DC won't be partnering with RDJ anytime soon!

Downey went on to say, "You know, you're never too old to burn your bridges because I believe I have offended everyone. I think I've got a couple more. 'I'll burn that bridge when I come to it' is my favourite phrase I've ever coined."

His honesty is, um, refreshing!

This man's beard is sooooooo sexy. Wonder if he's mean in the bedroom. I hope he is.

  2. 2

That's also how I felt about The Truman Show. What a complicated movie.

um… okay? Jesus what a dumb fuck

  6. 6

I loved in Iron Man and Tropic Thunder… but is he back on effing drugs? What was there not to get about The Dark Knight. It was amazing! If people didn't get it, it would have not been popular.

  7. 7

I THINK I NEED A DOCTORATE TO UNDERSTAND WTF HIS POINT WAS!

Re: Andy27 – ARE YOU KIDDING, THE TRUMAN SHOW WAS A COMPLICATED MOVIE! YOU ARE A DUMB FUCK!

  11. 11

    1?

  12. 12

Ok? The movie wasn't even hard to get. Fucking idiot.

  13. 13

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has no interest in this franchise. Go team Downey, Jr.!!

  14. 14

Just like how I like my men—sexy and dumb!

  15. 15

Uhh, is he still clean and sober??

  16. 16

I completely agree. It is refreshing. Despite R.D. Jr's past issues, which may be resurfacing and helping him make such comments, I completely agree with his take on Batman. Total hype. Heath did a good job but the story was lame. And that fake Batman voice thing? Comical at best. I really didn't understand why making this movie made 2 principal actors lose sleep. Despite all the money it has made, it really didn't work if you take away the hype and think about what you saw.

  17. 17

At least he's honest. The movie was not that good.

  18. 18

I agree….life is complicated enough. Why do we need to sit there and analyze "deep" movies…I'm paying to enjoy myself, not to sit there and figure out what the fuck is going on.

  19. 19

    RDJ = jealous much?

And for fucks sake, when was the last time a complicated movie came out of Hollywood?

Ok, I have a high education…but in this case I don't think it's as necessary as he makes it out to be XD

    He's still hot though.

  20. 20

Sorry - I TOTALLY agree with RDJ. The Dark Knight is so incredibly overrated. Bale had about 20 (monotone, uninspiring) lines. Eckhart sucked and WHY was Harvey Dent this 'amazing savior of Gotham' type character? I never got that. Maggie Gyllenhal is, I'll be charitable, not my cup of tea. Ledger was solid and that's it. AND, yeah, the plot was incomprehensible.

Iron Man CRUSHED it. And Marvel crushes - and always will crush - DC. After Tropic Thunder, Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Less Than Zero, RDJ can say whatever the hell he wants and he'll be right on in my book.

Someone's just a tad green. Iron Man was very good but The Dark Knight was a hundred times better. Also…what is there to not get? He must have drug-brain if he couldn't understand the plot and the reasoning behind Batman's whole transformation. It's not that hard!

  22. 22

  23. 23

    wow… what a disappointment.

    i love RDJ… he's actually quite intelligent.

so weird that he would take that stance. must be just going for the shock-value of it all… or tired of hearing about The Dark Night vs his big hit.

I liked Iron Man… but i LOVED the Batman Returns and The Dark Night BECAUSE they are intellectually stimulating, tell a great story, and not some boring stupid re-make.

    The Dark Night rocks man.

    24

    Did he REALLY said that??
I think he is a great actor….I don´t get what he gains by saying those things about the TDK. The movie was great and so was Iron Man. I think he is a bit jealous because Iron Man didn´t get that big box office.

  25. 25

oh whatever, he's such a hater. he's just mad cuz The Dark Knight was a WAY better movie than iron man and made WAY more money.

"I clearly need a college education to understand this movie."

Your clearly an idiot. I'm 15 and I understood this movie.

  26. 26

Obviously drugs burned his brain cells. He doesn't understand "Dark Knight"? Please, you don't need a fucking University degree to understand Good against Evil…I think he feels envy, but can't express his true feelings…Again, drugs also took his ability to talk….Inflated egos…The worst!

  27. 27

He is so dumb! Ok, I can understand if he said that he didn't understand The Prestige, because I didn't really get it either! But how do you not understand what happened in The Dark Knight?! That film was so straightforward (althought I have to admit, I didn't understand all the political stuff). I'm surprised he got the role of Iron Man. He's gained more notoriety for his drug addiction that he has his movies! And that whole "burning bridges" phrase he apparently coined or whatever, yeah, he's not going to have very many friends left in the end if he keeps burning all his bridges!

  28. 28

He thinks he's something, He's NOT!

  29. 29

    Testify, my brother!

  30. 30

He's probably the only person who has beef with DC comics.

  31. 31

I totally agree with him. Go RDJ!!!

  32. 32

Sad but true. Two faces was for about 5 minutes in the whole movie and 15 before the movie ended. I don't even understand what was the purpose of that. Bruce Wayne is painted like a ladies man but he clearly hates it because its an act, that I know of Bruce Wayne was kind of shy. Tony Stark is a party boy at heart but that's him. I love Batman but the writers have messed up so much with the original, the only disturbing stuff left was the joker. Batman is just there because is the name of the movie.

  33. 33

Dumbass, you aren't going to be on top forever-heck it looks like you're insecure about slipping already. You might need DC Comics someday, so you might want to do the intelligent thing and STFU.

  34. 34

God he's such a hot mess!

He was a hot mess in Less Than Zero in 87 and Downey will remain a hot mess until the day he dies. Fuck I want him to insult me. lol.

i did like batman, but i have to completely agree with RDJ. I was confused and annoyed by the end how i completely lost what was going on.

  36. 36

LOVE HIM!!! wish everyone was as honest abut their opinions and results of their actions… but then again, it's what makes him cool and not everyone can be as cool as RDJ, wouldn't want them to even try…

  37. 37

He,s right, the ending made no sense.

  38. 38

I totally agree with RDJ. dark knight was overrated and and too deep. i mean really i know the director was going for a darker batman, but it was just too dark. heath ledger was the only good thing about dark knight. that's it. Iron Man was 10 times better than dark knight

  39. 39

I Understand where he's coming from

  40. 40

i thought it was painfully obvious he was joking around… i guess not to everybody…

  41. 41

    I agree. It is refreshing.

  42. 42

both movies were great but it clearly depends on the viewer. i really liked the comic bookishness of iron man, it was done very well not like some other franchises (spidey anyone?) and i also really liked nolans vision of batman. it is a deep intellectual vision which has an appeal so both movies are great!

  43. 43

Team RDJ!! NO really, i agree. Does that make me dumb?

  44. 44

Yeah if i was high all the time i won't be able to understand a damn thing about anything!!! Sounds like he is back on drugs… I really hope he is not cause he is very talented and I like him a lot but still his comment was stupid!

  45. 45

Um, he did not coin that phrase.
    I still love him though.

  46. 46

    gosh rdj
i mean i get how he may not understand the whole plot but seriously
maybe he's just mad that the dark knight was a million times better than ironman

  47. 47

Jeepers, someone's got a bad attitude… but I totally agree with his point though. Whoever wrote the screenplay for the Dark Knight did a spectacularly shitty job, especially in the area of character development. There were so many things in that movie that made no sense. And actually, in order to find the movie amazing, I think it's a requirement that you DON'T have a college degree, otherwise you might expect things to make sense, you know, logically, and all that.

  48. 48

Im a diehard batman fan, I think the movie was a bit long and Bale's "batman voice" was annoying as hell. But still a great movie. I think Ol' Robert is just jealous. And Frankly, If you dont read comic books, dont be in a comic book movie. Its a slap in the face to the people that cherish the stories. Yes I know Ironman isnt Batman but still. Most of these people have never walked into a comic shop before they take the script and say "okay i'll do it"

  49. 49

furthermore, DC is the original. If there was no DC there might not have been comic books for a LONG TIME. Stan Lee has stated before that He loved Superman and Batman. so Fuck you Robert. Learn some background on the companies you are working for before you bash the one who started it all.

  50. 50

    I LOVE HIM!

I felt the same way about "The Dark Knight"….I thought it was over the top and not nearly as good as everyone says. I liked Ironman much better…so looking forward to IM2!

  51. 51

Love him, always will! And Iron Man was much more fun to watch than TDK.

  52. 52

He's right. There wasn't much of a point to Dark Knight. Or many of the DC comic movies. They are good movies, don't get me wrong. However, they try too hard to be "deep" and there really isn't any story line or
